I haven't gotten into the Monk yet, but I know there a lot of different types of monk running around. If you wanted to be a standard healer it doesn't matter much what your secondary is. Pretty much I'd say just pick one and try it out. That's what the beta is for anyway.
For example, you could take Ranger as your secondary, and get Signet of Capture and get yourself a pet pretty quick. That's helpful a lot of times.
It's usually a bad idea to try and take Elementalist, because it's hard to keep your party healthy if you're trying to blast stuff at the same time.
Necro and Mesmer have some good skills for a Monk.
I agree but just remember, Elementalists have the highest energy do they not? why not mix it with the elementalist to milk it for SOME of the abilities but mainly the energy? and use the monks Smiting abilities.
Having a Monk/Necro could be fairly worthwhile also due to the animate bone spells, with monk you would be able to get some really nice buffs on them.
And as Semantic said, Monk/Ranger is always good, if you caputre a creature and put up your beast stat, you could put on some really beefy buffs for him
if you're playing a primary monk, secondary won't matter as you will be playing a healer more than likely,
if you're playing a secondary monk and going for a backup healer, try ele/monk as you can use the bonus of the elementals energy to use your monk healing spells.
in the last BW i was an ele/monk, and thoroughly enjoyed it - sometimes i was the main healer (and then i could use the close effect spells like inferno any time a monster came close), other times I could just sit back and blast everything that moved. The key is to have resurrection and one or two low energy healing spells (healing hands is invaluable). The other benefit of the elementalists is that they have the elemental armour, so if you know what types of elemental damage enemies are going to use you can increase your tank even more.

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...
My main character in Guild Wars is a monk, his secondary skill is Warrior. I took Warrior because I wanted the extra hit points, and most importantly for me, Sprint skill.
Yes, I am the primary healer of my team, I've been playing and enjoying support classes for quite a few many years, and if there's one thing to remember is that a dead healer/rezzer, means game over.
Sprint allows me to get out of harms way in PvE, and gives me a small edge in PvP to get away from being beat on by a tank or archer.

Well cheers everyone
