These patches are pretty close to being on par with WoWs patches in terms of they never seem to add anything big...
you forgot to add that Trion put them out every few months, with WoW its at least double that.
This pretty much surpasses anythign WoW has put out short of a expansion. Planar attunement is basically alternate advanacement and anyone who has seen it can tell you it is a very big game changer.
Master mode are basically 5 man versions of getting raid gear. The chronicles are solo instances that like 3 mmo's have bothered with before.
They are still lacking in the "meaningful pvp" department. If you want to it is more approiate to call 1.5 a concept patch more then a content patch. Yes the chronicles are new and so is the master mode stuff, but that is some stuff we have seen before.
Example of a Concept and Content: WoW 4.3 Raid + 3 heroics = Content...Concept = Transmogrifer and Void Storage. We all know that raid and heroic will be out dated and solable next expansion and made pointless, but the concept stuff satys relavent.
I understand what you are saying and I do think that these patches are better than WoWs, but they really dont wow me. And I'm waiting a few more "major" patches to determine if they can keep up this pace or if they have been storing this stuff from before launch and they just polish and launch because this pace is unnatural. If they can keep it up with this quality or better then I will be impressed.
I can tell you any 10man you see out these guys was designed from scratch. That was literally a last minute change in the very last BETA. Coin lock was from scratch.
Planar attunement is a EQ2 carry over, but still from scratch. Chronicles and Master modes are using stuff they already have and changing mechanics and itemization.
That reference to the Golden Maw and thing in the sea is Ember Isle a brand new continent in 1.6 in developement as far as I know since month 1 of this game.
I'm still looking for great faction vs faction conflict ...a la DAOC. They have lifted so many concepts from other games...and they have several x Mythic employees yet they still have ignored the plea's since beta for this. So...I continues to read threads and keep up on the games development.....but certainly won't give my precious money on a game that still comes up short...in my opinion.
In my personel opinion if I had to speak honestly here. Let GW2 take them. They can have all of the mmo pvp'rs. It is probably easier to compete with ToR/WoW/EQ2 on pve then it is to try and make that much pvp to make people happy.
I know it is not completely ignored because of the new war front, but some major game changing stuff like fort sieges seem on the back burner. Even Trion admitted the amount of interest from mmo pvp'rs caught them off guard.
Never was a PvP game and they never promoted that fact. For every person pleaing for faction v faction their are plenty who are not, like myself.
Well, when you release so little content at launch, you have a lot of catching up to do, don't you?
Plenty content at launch.
Even at this rate it's about 1 year away from reaching a minimum of depth acceptable for a 2011 mmorpg. And on top of that, i'm not shure if Trion is pushing it into the right direction in order to bring it up to it's potential.
I will still probably try the game a couple of days after 1.5, starting with a friend. The solo/duo content looks interesting to us, but we want to check the player's general reaction to it first. Many things looked awesome on Trion's paper, but lacked in execution.
The lack of content is why I complain about these patches. When you launch with less zones than Aion (which didnt have that many zones) and the game is as linear one zone per bracket then the game needs more content and these patches really dont add much content. They add more raids.
What exactly did Aion launch with again? This is a quiz by the way. Yes I am that puremallace in case you are wondering. Go ahead and tell me how many zone and the name of the instances.
Here is what Rift had on launch date. Now go through 1 for 1 and tell me how Aion compares. To be fair I will even let you go 8 months after it launched. lets test your Aion knowledge.

He said zones, not dungeons. This was the biggest problem I had with the game in beta and ultimately why I didn't buy it. There was just not enough places to level up in. At the very least (to me) they should have had different zones for each faction to level up in. Not many mmos do that anymore, which is probably why I don't play any right now, though I really want to. I enjoy rolling multiple characters, but I don't want to have to do the same zones over again to level them. I like variety:)
I can agree there and I am a fan boy and do agree we are basically missing a continent. I see what Trion was attempting to do by packing the big land mass they had, but it does seem small in scope when you get used to it.
I am hoping Ember Isle and Planetouched Wilds will spread it out. Take a lesson from WoW though and do not open zones and forget about it.
Rift was a very good time-fill mmorpg for its'journey, I think. But I'd have to agree that the lack of big content updates leaves me comfortable knowing that end-game (level cap) is largely an excercise in game-play redundancy about redundant conent.
Like most major mainstream mmorpgs, they morph into a subscription-based MOBA or repetitive dungeon crawl when level cap is hit.
But, if these devs get their act together with deliverance of RvR, I might come back to check it out, even though their missing a third faction imho.
Not defending aion or trying to get out of the topic subject but what I liked about aion that rarely any mmo does is the "open dungeons" it has aka elites zones in the maps with bosses in these zones that dropped higher value loot compared to random greens.
Many don't count these as dungeons but I count them:
Elite mobs? check
Bosses? check
Higher value loot than random mobs? check
They are just open dungeons not instanced and wish more games had these among instanced dungeons.
You can keep on rift subject sorry for the off topic kinda.
Every RIFT update so far has exceeded my expectations.
Maybe the updates are a little late but unless you are in some uber raiding guild your guild is still trying to work on Hammerknell progression or the final T1 raid bosses. Much of the population is wrapping up their need for the T2 dungeons so the master dungeons are coming up just in time.
I am excited about 1.5 and we will have lots of new activities to do when it arrives. Keep up the great work Trion
[Mod Edit]
Now that that is done, I wasnt talking about dungeons I was talking about zones. You know, those things that you level in that aren't as instanced. Pump out as many dungeons or raids as you want, but it still dont fix the fact that the game has a VERY linear progression (the kind of progression that makes me not want to level alts because its virtually the exact same expirence).
What Aion did you play? That was just as linear if not worse. Atleast Rift they move you along to the next zone every 3-4 levels unlike Aion where it was was every 10.
lol Aion leveling back when it started...Do this quest 100 times in this part of the abyss...now go over here do this quest 100 times in this part of the abyss....now go over here and do this quest 100 times
The game does have bad replayability and I have to see a review say other whise. There is no one I know of who claims it has that. If you play the game it takes all of 4 seconds to realize that and it is one of the flaws in the game. The entire game according to Trion is to make it so you never want to re roll.
They literally have said "only time you will want to roll a alt is to completely change archeatype like Mage to Cleric".
1.5 is the deciding factor for me. If its extremely good ill renew my sub in 1 month intervals (down from 6 month founder).
Right now I have no reason to log in, hopefully this changes.

Looking forward to: Nothing
It is a interesting patch. I am more used to seeing this stuff in boxed expansions. Aions single player instance was done in Assault on Balaurea. I think even AA's were put in a expansion in EQ forever ago.
I expect 1.6 pretty fast after 1.5 in very quick succesion. They released 1.3 and then like 2 days later had 1.4 on the pts. I expect something like that after 1.5. 1.6 is supposed to be the biggy. That is the return to Rifts that never despawn because no 50 will cry about it.
I just want something to do...
I don't even care anymore what type of content it is. just something.

I will tell you now 1.5 is like 70% concept and 30% new content. The chronicles are fun to run for sure. I have bug tested both master modes going live in 1.5 and they were fun too, so I can see them being used as a very good gating mechanic into the raiding.
Leveling up planar attunement actually got addicting on the pts.
1.6 is the content patch if I had to guess the opposite like 70% content and 30% concept. New raid rifts, new raid, new type of invasions, new continent. I bet most of it is close to done.
I don't know about you, but casting spells to kill a mob is a different experience than bashing, stabbing, shooting at them.
Probabaly you try to melee with a mage that's why you get the same experience? I don't know, but even virtually speaking, it's weird for you to say that.
Ready for GW2!!!
