OP, it's obvious that you didn't do any research into the timeline of the game and the backstory to the exact time the players are taking part in before you made the post, otherwise you woudn't be asking this question.
You simply watched a few movies that take place 3000 YEARS after this mmo does, and made a judgement call. It was a bad one.
Looks like the Star Wars lore nerds are already starting to complain about the minutiae.
This is why we can't have nice things!!
Sigh.
Pick a game, play it. If it is fun, keep playing it. If it is not, play something else.
No, we "lore nerds" know that Bioware has it right. It's the people who think that SW's lore starts and ends with the movies that are lost and confused, and pitching a fit.
How does that make any kind of sense seeing as in the movies Jedis were these gifted and elite warriors who were trained from a small child?
And they are supposedly no more powerful than other non Jedi classes?
I am sorry but, if this is really the case, it is absurd. I dont understand how a SW fan would be able to become immersed in such a virtual world with any John Schmoe running around like a Jedi Knight.
How do you know the characters in this game weren't trained from the start?
Do you really expect everyone in the game to train in the game for 12+ years before they get to be a jedi? Honey by then the game is probably already dead and most players probably already lost interest after first year of playing.

I guess I was mostly referring to the nerds that use their nerdiness to complain about things. So I suppose there are good nerds and bad nerds. Or would that be light side nerds and dark side nerds...
However it works out, just don't abuse the power of the schwartz.
He goes to excellently explain that jedi loses a lot of their cool because they are being fan serviced way to much. In the original movies, you saw a lightsaber hear and there. in the new movies, they are basically parading them around, using them to scrap jawa butter on sand people bread.
It is why I firmly believe that Ralph Koasters vision of a Star Wars MMO was hundred times cooler than this, because it had more layers, were this is more pure fan service. It will be an easy sell for a 13 year old, but I personally think that they are just hurting their IP. They don't know when to stop, when to cut back.
Gamers often don't know what they are asking. they are not always supposed to get their fan service, they need to get what they need.
Uhgg... I think that's some straight up hogwash, imagined by someone who can only see their own vision of Star Wars which they imagined in their head, not what was actually on screen.
Why did the 3 newer flms have more lightsabers? Because it took place at a time before they were all but killed off. Why does KOTOR have so many? Again it was during a time before they were all killed off.
I hated the prequels and remasters, but what you just said is pure hogwash.
Uhm. I don't think you get it.
Lucas wrote and showed it that way, due to fan service. because jedis are coool!!111 when in reality, I personally just grew sick of them. Took away lot of their mystic, and replaced it with stupid lore and reasons.
Great justification you just confirmed what he said you are seeing your own vision of Star Wars and assuming that somehow the way you see it is the right way to see it.
It's great justification because I am usually right, and I think Star Wars have become some childish trash with the new movies.
A saying goes; less is more. George Lucas didn't understand that, and thus he fan serviced his own creation to hype up his legions of fans.
People got mad hyped when they heard about the large jedi geonosis battle in episode 2, but in the end it was all fluff, no substance.
Thus my original point, which you failed so hard at seeing, simply argues that the OP of this thread is clueless for even slightly wasting time talking about the lore.
TL;DR; Jar Jar Binks. That's it. Nothing more needs to be said. Now, start actually reading the posts before you reply, and stop assuming that people are talking on everyones behalf just because they are don't want to start every sentence with "in my opinion".

Star Wars has always been aimed at teens and preteens. It's not just limited to the prequels, just look at Ewoks.

I know. The old films had charm. You had a few fights in those filns with lightsabers. many large scale events was referenced. it gave room for imagination on the viewers part. And that's exactly the point.
you dont need to explain every little simple thing. sometimes, having open endings to plot threads, is much more rewarding. Just look at Ico.
It's just that there are so many clueless people on this forum that it boggles my mind. I don't dislike people if they like the prequels. the original movies had flaws, but all the stuff they added in the prequels was retarded. Like Medi-Cloriens. and the whole "only sith deals in absolute". No s**t! What are jedis doing? so lame.
My whole census on this is that people who whine about lore, needs to shut up. ultimately games are about being played, and so many fanboys and idiots pranch around shouting immersion like it's Deus Vult. Immersion/lore needs to take second seat to gameplay right now. sometimes these two concepts contradicts each other, and that has always been my main argument for that star wars + MMO is not nessesarily a match made in heaven.

I can't agree with that since I feel that it is no sense to use a specific IP if you can't make your game feel like it belong in the IP.
I don't really think that how many players play a jedi have anything at all to do with that, but why bother paying a lot of money for the right to use an IP if you don't want to make a game that captures that IP?
To me it seems like Bioware should have made this game as a mass effect game instead.
That doesn't mean that it will be a bad game or anything, but to me it seems like a Star wars game should feel rather similar to the movies, no matter if it is the first good trilogy or the 3 Jar jar movies.
Cryptic already proved that slabbing a Star trek label on a game that have very little to do with star trek wasn't a great idea, I think it only will lead to dissapointment and it might actually turn people away from a game that is rather good because they expect it to make sense with the IP.
There are really only 2 reasons to use a famous IP: Either you like the IP a lot and want to turn it into a game or you will use it to get more players to initially buying it. And the second reason can backfire.
I have nothing whatsoever against TOR but I just feel like they should have used their own IP for it, or try to make it more like the movies, either is fine.

I think you're missing the point. This game is based on "Kights of the Old Republic", which BioWare did create. Its not based on the movies per se... Though it is based in the Star Wars Universe. And considering how many people really do like BioWare's RPGs, I suspect it will do OK. Even if people like yourself really don't appreciate it.
Uhhhh, now correct me if I'm wrong, but this is all supposed to happen MANY years before the movies even started. There were MANY Jedi back then. Have you forgoten about the school full of "younglings"? I could see your point about Sith maybe, because there's only supposed to be a master and an apprentice, but there were TONS of Jedi. And, perhaps since this was before the movies, the Sith also had a larger population, but then figured out it was too dangerous to fight on two fronts at once, seeing as you know all those evil bastards would be offing each other to become the true Sith Lord.
Bottom line, this is a totally different canon. Stop trying to jam it into your "Star Wars Ep 1-6" box.
As for gameplay > lore. Yes if you are not a SW fan but if you are then I dont see how you dont find it ridicilous with Jedis being nothing more than your standard storm trooper.
There's your problem. All the other classes are also intended to be "much more than your standard storm trooper".
And seeing how, even in your first levels as a Jedi or whatever, you'll be mowing down no name stormtroopers several at a time, it fits just fine into the genre, where Luke Skywalker does the same even being "fresh off the farm".

See, the difference is that millions of fans haven't been spamming Bioware's forums for years for a ME MMO.
Lucas Forums and Bioware's forums have been POUNDED by fans like me for years asking for this game.
The game fits the IP perfectly. There are countless books, and a couple of games centered around the old republic era.
The entire "feel" of this timeline is different from the atmosphere of any of the movies.
Like it or not, the SW IP does not begin, or end, with 6 movies.
Bioware have been pioneers in the Old Republic SW IP, from KOTOR, to Drew's Darth Bane trilogy of books, and the newer books directly centered on SWTOR. This is at this point as much their IP as it is LA's.
I'm sorry, but we've known that anyone can be a Jedi for at least a good year now. Where have you been OP?
Also in the "Old Republic" they had academies for the Jedi. There were lots of them. Now I'm not usually one for Expanded Universe, but as far as the Old Republic storyline goes, I like it.
If you can't wrap your head around the idea that you're gonna see 75% of the game population being a Force user, then this game is not for you.
Uhhhh, now correct me if I'm wrong, but this is all supposed to happen MANY years before the movies even started. There were MANY Jedi back then. This practice was put in place by Darth Bane, hundreds of years after the timeline of SWTOR.
I like how the OP made 2 uneducated comments then never returned to stand by his statement. Can you say "Drive by trolling"?
"Drive By's" tend to be a common tactic of haters to this game. It was only put up yesterday, but by judging the post history of the OP, I wouldn't hold my breath on him returning here since his faulty logic has been refuted on 12 pages and counting.

I have a feeling that for some people here the IP begins and ends with three movies. I always find that interesting because the usual things they complain about with the prequals could be said for the Original Trilogy.
Bioware have been pioneers in the Old Republic SW IP, from KOTOR, to Drew's Darth Bane trilogy of books, and the newer books directly centered on SWTOR. This is at this point as much their IP as it is LA's.
/end thread. Far as I'm concerned that's the knockout blow after a long, one sided match.

Sounds like someone who is butthurt over the NGE (New Gaming Experience) that killed SWG (Star Wars Galaxies) still. Get over it, bro.
1) Wiping out a bunch of mindless droids is hardly being elite. Jedi got owned by troopers and bounty hunters in the movies, not to mention tkms in the EU. Its not biowares fault that you have a shoddy memory of the actual lore.
2) As if you ever had any intentions of playing this game.
Number 2 in a nutshell.
The OP sounds like another play of "Wah.....why didnt we get the PRECioUs 2". After all this time, you would think that broken record would be off the playlist.
Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.
1. Ok, lets say you have one million jedi. There won't be that many players much less jedi on a single server, but let's use the number for arguments sake and because it's a nice round number. I hate to tell you this but in a galaxy populated by trillions, one million is still a very small fraction of the population. VERY small.
2. The jedi and the sith in the game have indeed trained all their lives, so in that sense they aren't just every Joe Schmoe. How are you going to 'earn' the right to be a jedi/sith when in the great majority of cases they are trained from a very young age. Do you want to start a character at two are three years of age and take the time to go through years of training for your sense of realism? No, like most people you will be satisified with the idea that you've already gone through that. It's part of your past but you personally didn't have to do that.
3. Each character is among the best of the best in his class, and even in the movies we see that jedi are far from invincible. I personally believe that in any 1v1 situation a force user should come out on top, even against the best of some other class, but that's just my opinion. However, it's clear in the lore that force users can be beaten by non-force users.

I like how the OP made 2 uneducated comments then never returned to stand by his statement. Can you say "Drive by trolling"?
This practice was put in place by Darth Bane, hundreds of years after the timeline of SWTOR.
"Drive By's" tend to be a common tactic of haters to this game. It was only put up yesterday, but by judging the post history of the OP, I wouldn't hold my breath on him returning here since his faulty logic has been refuted on 12 pages and counting.
Currently Playing: World of Warcraft
/end thread. Far as I'm concerned that's the knockout blow after a long, one sided match.

Sounds like someone who is butthurt over the NGE (New Gaming Experience) that killed SWG (Star Wars Galaxies) still. Get over it, bro.
Well, there's gonna be atleast one trooper.
