Also wanted to add the the "techno-gnome" concept is not a WoW original.  D&D has techno-gnomes with the country of Lantan in Forgotten Realms:

    http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Lantan

    Everquest also had techno-gnomes:  http://eqplayers.station.sony.com/images/news_images/akanon/akimage01.jpg

So my point is that the concept of a short techno race is definitely a cliche, but it is not a new cliche.  Gnomes that are technologically advanced are like elves that like nature...kind of a typical fantasy trope.

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

Just admit their wow gnomes. Go ahead, everybody can see them.

Whereas, I just see an ability to pigeonhole without nuance.

Lemurs!  Orangatangs!  Must be the same!  Bipeds!  All those bilaterally symmetrical bipeds are just copies!

It was aptly pointed out that myths everywhere have little people.  Often little people that are superior crafters of some sort.

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

“What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul. “  - Billy Madison quote.

MMO fanatics are absolutely hilarious! Can you please explain to me how Jeff Grubb one of the people that help create the D&D Gnome in 1983 ripped off Blizzard and their Warcraft franchise that started in 1994? That is some time traveling #$%^ there! After all Jeff Grubb made the Dragonlance Gnomes (and he is the designer of the Asura) eleven years before the first Warcraft game was ever published.

Yeah that makes total sense, that the guy who made Gnomes what they are today in D&D, would need to rip off Blizzard for ideas on how to create a race! After all MMOs created everything and without them all of gaming would be doomed!

Sorry Jeff Grubb but WoW published in 2004 beat you too the ideas of Gnomes…/pound head against wall

I can't remember a game so original in it's scenery and environment design. Once again it's hard not to give Anet props for a job well done. I can't say I like the Asura, but they have a killer looking city, a terrible personality (I like that), and they are pug ugly lil spits.

    Pretty cool.

i also played gnome casters in WoW. the Asura are their own. cant say i'll play them, but theyre definitely unique and the art is well done. the city itself though is breathtaking.

Gnomes? No, I see rats... Hell there's even Rat in their city name.

I've been fighting the notion of GW2 being a WoW rip-off for so long, but in this one instance I feel like I've had my legs sweeped from under me. I've never seen such a direct WoW rip-off as this, it seems like Jeff Grubb wanted his WoW gnomes back, and he got them. They're almost identical. There's just nothing I can do to defend them. I have tried to defend them... but what can I do? These guys are WoW gnomes.

You see what happens when a gnome and a goblin get together for a steamy night of passion-all hell breaks loose thats what and their offspring walla Asura!

    Yeah crazy ain't it.

Dear Lord they had better have flying mounts within those massive cities. I'm all for grandiose but having to hike it over multi-leveled city blocks would make playing rather tiresome.

Other than that, I have been pretty sure I would first play that race. I always tire of seeing massive toons on my screen or overly evil or dark settings typical to the "cool" races. Well ok I still have a thing for the Norn.

No we just have to wait see if the game sucks or not :)

    You stay sassy!

Just look at the cover for Stargate, it seriously looks like it could be straight out of a GW2 Asura ad.

    http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3633026560/tt0111282 .

Stargate even had a race called Asurans!  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asuran

So yeah, the Asura are small and technologically advanced like gnomes, but that's about it.  Their architecture, the concept of the Asuran gate, even the name of their race was influenced by Stargate.

Lol'd , I totally get it now. GW2 ripped of Stargate, they should sue Anet!

Seriously who cares if something is similar to another game? Why does it matter?

Honestly, I think Dream Chaser was trolling. He(or she?) has always seemed like a smart poster and if he truly believes that the Asura are rip offs of Gnomes, which would be laughable, then he's kind of taken a step back in the quality posting department.

Everyone needs to read that Jeff Grubb quote. He's probably the most credible person when it comes to this subject.

Asura, they only thing they have a common with gnomes is that fact they are small. Asura have a much different society. In all honesty they wouldnt even work with each other, but they do because it helps with their own inventions and its for selfish reasons. Rata Sum was and is built based on trial and error and "one uping" the top dog in the field that one asura is working in because you need to be the best.
