I do alt-fu, so the no alt's of the other faction idea annoys me. I can see the need for some restrictions to swtiching factions to enter a battle in progress or something like that to keep the PvP balanced and reduce alt-exploits... but it seems to me to be a hamhanded tool to get people to feel Faction Pride for Team Dragon or Team Templar or whatever.
If a dev wants me to feel emotionally invested in my Main's faction, he's going to have to do that through quality storylines, motivating and captivating content, not through hamfisting around with alt-limits.
I've got too many characters in my head, with their own personalities and concepts, to be content playing Faction Loyalty. And I like the freedom of keeping all my toons on one server.
Well even if you like the idea; what's the opposition against having different factions to play on different servers?
Mainly because some days I'll want to play my templar while my wife's playing her dragon, that sort of things. We don't PvP, neither do most of our friends. So when we are on together we'll likely be looking for the parts of the show that are cooperative. I don't want to have to play my Templar just because a couple of our friends have a jones to play theirs.
As an afterthought... when devs take shortcuts, say making limits on alts/factions, then they're they're tempted to continue taking shortcuts rather than producing quality work that give me a reason to feel compelled to fight for this or that faction, to care about story, or event rather than play it because "eh, I don't feel like logging out and back in again, and I like teaming with my wife's Dragon." I've always seen attempting to use game mechanics (rather than intriguing and vibrant content) as a hammerlock rather than an encouragement to make people get into PuGs, raiding, pvp, or faction loyalty is a cheap substitute for quality content.
I'm not trying to argue or anything, but that sounds like a wild assumption.
Plus I don't think that will be much of a worry considering PVE elements are being highly touted in this game.
But for hardcore pvp games where people do use meta gaming techniques to try and gain advantages, no matter how slight they may be, being locked into a faction per server I believe helps push that sense of isolationism that's needed to push competition.
It helps keep those "every1 be fweens" idiots at bay.
I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.
Anyone know why the dragon are so popular? i joined them as i like the balance thing, expecting them to be the smallest faction, but they are twice the size as the others, judging from the FB meta-data ive seen.
I'd say it's because they're the only option if you don't want to play a hidebound conservative or a corporate greed-head.

Also true.

I don't see what people have against Illuminati. I mean I definitely like their image and could consider playing as one. A desire-driven organisation fighting for control of everything. People love playing the depraved faction.
I don't like Templars, but I can see the kinds of people who would. People who like to play paladins and be the 'righteous' hero of light. Or just people people obsessed with military might who want to be a soldier in a powerful order enforcing army. (But so far it looks like Templars lack enthusiastic players to become much of an army)
I choose to support Dragons simply because the ideals suit me. I think it's just the fact that so many people empathise with Dragons that makes them so popular. That said... I want to see more Templars and Illuminati so that the war is more fun.
That said, I still fondly remember Mid/Igraine, and I hope this game's factions make the experience as memorable.
Hi Khorvik, I'm also from igraine (hib side), and have great memories of the realm dynamics on that server and in DAoC overall. While I'm typically not a fan of this genre of MMO, the 3-factions + pvp = very interested in this game.

Instance content is faction co op - that means you can have an Illuminati and a Dragon on the same team. The PvP content is Faction vs Faction. I'm not sure about the open world content, but there is no open world PvP so unless something is faction specific, you can co op it up.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
ah faction pride. i remeber when everyone said it's what would fuel Warhammer Online's Open World PvP and RvR, we see how that went *pop* scenario *pop* scenario etc.
i hope for TSW and all of ur article does happen. cause i look forward to this game a lot
The Illuminati have been mocking the Templars and their self righteous attitude. This "Holier than thou" attitude makes all the illuminati chuckle and laugh, leaving them eager to watch the Templars fail. The Templars are nothing more then a bunch of misguided sheep with no more intelligence then the bile that flows from a diseased dog.
The Templars are sick of the indignance of the illuminati, hoping they choke on their misbegotten gains and power. They would love to show them what real power is, and crush them beneath the hammer of truth. The illuminati condone the life of lust and frivalty, and should be wiped from this good earth because they are the plague, and every foul stench is a result of their mark.
As a Dragon, I know this to be true.
Yeah, lust and frivolity....with a whole lot of money on the side.
The fact that a lot of us, including me, have chosen our faction and are willing to argue about it says something about the work going into the factions and the depth of the gameworld. As for my faction choice, I finally have an icon after a year or two of posting on this site without ever feeling the need to bother with one.
Dragon evacuated the village, that's so. But being especially cranky about having to do all that sheepdog work, I stayed behind a few extra minutes and left some fun surprises as well.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
While I understand the single faction per server thing, in reality, I'm afraid it will only penalize those without the cash to purchase multiple accounts rather than denying people the ability to spy on/sabotage the other factions. It's a great idea, but I just don't know that it's going to work out that well in the end.
Yep. Limiting factions this way does not stop anyone from spying or setting up alliances in DAoC, and in this day and age it's even more easy to bypass such 'precautions.' As pointed out, there are always going to be those types that can afford to have multiple accounts, so that they can spy on the other factions.
"Oh my, how horrible, someone is criticizing a MMO. Oh yeah, that is what a forum is about, looking at both sides. You rather have to be critical of anything in this genre as of late because the track record of these major studios has just been appalling." -Ozmodan

They should broaden the personalities of the illuminati and templars. They do seem too restrictive to me. Faction pride tends to be more about flavor, and less about narrow-minded ideologies, anyhow.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
I'm pretty sure katana are NOT going to be Dragon exclusive, Tom...
The Dragon ideology is about balance and neutrality. It is definitely not the kind of faction everyone would want to be in. Someone who wants to think of themselves as special, isn't necessarily going to join the Dragons. You can be an individual in whatever faction. The personalities aren't restrictive, it's just the ideologies. And even then, you're just an insignificant pawn to the faction you choose, it really doesn't matter who you're fighting for, you just have to believe in what you're doing.
Dragons aren't popular because they attract people who think they're special, it's popular because there's too many left-wing people interested in this game.
PVP PVP PVP. Working on PVP, promising so much for PVP. PVP specific uniforms (ugh - hopefully you guys can do that a little better). PVP only in great iconic locations and PVE get New England zombies. Warzones (4 of them) for PVP.
If game devs and PVPers aren't concerned about us (insert insult here) PVErs thats ok. Another EVE in a new genre is fine, should be a good game. The despised PVErs still have SWTOR and GW2 but I would really like to think we had something to offer in TSW. I am afraid out of game www network is not going to be as popular as you might wish altho it will certainly energize a portion of the gamers who play.
It would be nice to get more coverage of PVE. I will PVP with a cabal only. I truly enjoy guilds. Limiting to one character? Have you guys any idea how many players have altitis? Flamers are ubiquitous (shrug) I do not really care. If TSW wants money then I would like to see...more please.

Lot of assumptions here. Yeah, the game has promise, but I signed up for the beta using my fb account and quickly deleted the TSW fb game from my profile.
Why? There was no game!
Lots of talk like every other MMO in developement and funcom basically has nothing, 7 months out, to indicate that this game is going to be a success. The recent fb debacle took a lot of shine of their talking points for me too.

I think the Dragon is the most popular faction at the moment becuase its the one that appeals to all the 'I'm a snowflake' players out there.
they don't have to commit to an ideology and the whole chaos thing lets them imagine their character however they want it.
I also perdict a mass exodus from the faction within 2 months of launch, though i won't get into the why of that here, would hate to offend anyone.
Why dragons are so popular?
