Returning players become Premium players?

"Returning Players Become Premium Players

We honor your commitment and experience! If you used to play City of Heroes, you will automatically become a premium player. New free players can become premium players by buying any amount of Paragon Points.

  • Get everything that free players get.

  • Retain nearly everything you already purchased or unlocked, including Super Boosters, expansions, and directly purchased character slots.

  • Retain all the Veteran Rewards you earned."

Now does this mean returning players as in non-subscribers who used to play or returning players as in already subscribed players "returning" to Freedom?

Free = hasn't spent a penny on the game, basically extended trial. People who spend (or have spent) any amount of money on the game become Premium players.

Premium = former subscribers who aren't currently subbing, or new people who have bought items/gametime.

    VIP = subscribers.

So, I guess it depends on your definition of "returning." Returnees who sub become VIPs, returnees who don't become Premiums (unless they're returning trial players who I'm guessing will become Free)

Remember, it has to be fun to be a game. Grinding is a bedroom activity, and the point is definitely not to do my wife as fast as possible.

That is if you can remember your NCsoft master accounts name, password, and security question answers as well as the City of Xs game account name and password.

What is this, 1999? Who forgets their username and passwords? The way you typed that make its sounds like, you're blamming NCsoft, when its clearly the account holder's fault.

Anyway, yeah, VIPs are the only ones that are subscribing. Premium have put money into the game at some point in the game's existance.  Its not that great anyway. You're still going to be limited in character slots and choices even if you've already used them before. So You're probably be locked out of the characters you want play.  Maybe when we get the points for the marketplace, we can use them to make it worth playing again. If this gives CoH new life, it might make it fun again. Who knows.

There are lots of people out there that do not record these. I'm not one of them.

In NCsofts situation it's the security questions that catch you out. Anytime you get a new IP address you have to answer those questions. The page where you enter them states that capitalization isn't needed or regarded when answering but when you look at their support pages about those same questions they say that capitalization is important. They have yet to correct whichever one of those statements are wrong. Eight days ago I answered correctly. Today I didn't and ended up sending several emails to their support in order to correct my typing error.

If you can get into your NCsoft master account, it becomes very obvious what your game login is and you can reset your game password from there.

    Hey guys,

Thanks for responding and clarifying. What exactly is the benefit of a premium player? I've read free players aren't able to send private tells, do premium players have this ability?

  • rodney28021rodney28021 Member UncommonPosts: 14

yeah, find your ncsoft account usename and password and the city of heroes username and password and try them out soon as the game goes free2play,  If you have a trial account try that one out too, that one will be free2play only till you spend any real money on that account.  If you make a new city of heroes account once free2 play is on, that account is free2play till you spend any real money on that account.  I think the whole City of Heroes game have greatly improved since it's start.

My guesses are Sept 27th, Oct 4th, Oct 11th, or Oct 18th for go live although I'm favoring October 4th (note, those are all Tuesdays).  Paragon is stil putting out some stability patches and the Halloween event will likely go up on the 25th....and I wouldn't open it up only a week ahead of that, so that's where I get my initial window.  I figure Oct 4th allows 3 weeks to address additional stability issues due to a serious influx of players and also Oct 4th is kind of a nice round number, start off a new month.  It has to go up before Halloween though since it's a huge draw.

Well, partially wrong.  Former player accounts (Premiums) are being activated over the course of the next week so they will have access.  My friend's old account is active already.

Partially right because the community manager (Zwillinger) admitted to an "overabundance" of caution in staging the release of Freedom like this.

  • PioneerStewPioneerStew Member Posts: 874

My 4 year old inactive account is active again with a lot of goodies in the post (tailor credits etc) .  It seems that much that was P2P is free now, with only additional aesthetic items and xp boosts available from the cash shop.  I will be buying from it purely to support this model, and because I am a vain bugger when it comes to my toons.

  • GravargGravarg Member UncommonPosts: 3,424

They need to make it so that former players can access all thier characters.  I have 4 different masterminds that are useless now,  This was the only class that I ever played at length, all the other classes stink.  I won't be playing this because I can't access any of my level 50s....Yes I could spend the $15, yes it's $15 to buy a class, but why not just sub if I'm going that route.  i'll stick with Rift and FFXIV, at least they're not outdated.

If you are a returning subscriber looking to play for free, keep  in mind that you won't have access to invention origins unless you've been a paying subscriber long enough to unlock the tier 7 paragon rewards (you need to have earned 27 paragon tokens). At 27 paragon tokens "earned", you will have lifetime access to the invention origin system.

I didn't realize why my characters felt weak until I read that the IOs you have on your character(s) are useless unless you have the invention origin license (meaning you need to be a VIP or you have earned 27 paragon tokens). So unless you're a new player or you're an old enough player that you don't have IOs on your characters, you need to spend money to even have functional characters.

I've earned 23 myself, so I'm 4 away from being able to really play for "free". You earn 1 paragon token for your first purchase of paragon points (minimum 400) and when you purchase 1200 paragon points as well. 400 paragon points is  roughly $5. If you go VIP, you'll get 1 per month of subscription as well as 400 paragon points per month.

    Doesn't look like it.

I'm back in as a former subscriber; thanks mmorpg for posting that bit of news; and really I'm kind of underwhelmed that returning players aren't at least being tossed a little bone here.

You get a number of unlock slot tokens, you can only unlock 2 characters per server. (So if you have 5 like me, I can only unlock 2 on Champion despite having all 12 of my toons there...)

    I don't think it's very premium feeling.

I used to play MMOs like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

Not entirely true -- in addition to simply subscribing or earning 27 tokens, you can....

    a. Pay 160pp/month for an IO license and have full access to your Invention Origin Enhancements (that's $2 versus $15), or

    b. Use your alternative build and slot it with SOs.  The game was balanced around single-origin enhancements to begin with and viable as a free option.

Actually, that unlock number isn't accurate.

If you're a free player (defined as never a subscriber and never a purchasor), then you get 2 global character unlocks that you can use on any server (except the VIP server).  But, it is a total of 2.

Premium players are former subscribers or those who have made some purchase on the paragon market.  These players get 2 global character unlocks + 1 global character unlock per year subscribed + 2 global character slots if subscribed during issue 12 (Villaine Epic archtypes introduced) + 2 slots if you purchased Going Rogue before the release of Freedom + 1 global slot for every character slot purchased.  That total number of global character slots can be allocated across any server (except the VIP one).

Subscribers get 12 character slots PER server plus whatever was previously purchased.

You get to play all the content you have previously purchased subscription free...

Thats a pretty damned big bone.

Well, you do have access to the characters.

    Either sub.

Sub until you get tier 5 paragon rewards (which may not be far off for you).

Or pay to unlock the class permanently  (as some of the more hostile crowd on the CoX boards pointed out).

As for being "outdated", that just sounds bitter, given your stated alternatives.

Just logged in today and it says I have 9 slots on Freedom + 2 global slots, haven't gone to other servers to see how many I get yet. It's going to be a little weird getting into this, I started one character on Exalted but I can't go on there now that my sub ran out.

Except IOs, my demonic Mastermind from Going Rogue, or access to my editted missions.

And regardless to the other post saying I was wrong.. My software says otherwise.

I didn't see that invention license can be purchased with PP. So that's in addition to what I stated, and if you missed it, my aim was at returning players who want to play for free and have characters that use IOs. It doesn't apply to new players who don't have anything to lose since they haven't invested in IOs.

B is not an option. People that want to play their characters that are decked out in IOs (like me) can't. Nobody is going to replace their IO sets with SOs, you're crazy to even suggest that, I'd rather not play.

Bottom line is, you either pay up or you can't really play for free if you fall under this category, at least until you earn 27 paragon tokens.

  • GravargGravarg Member UncommonPosts: 3,424

Yeah, I'm a little bitter towards this game now. Yes, I could pay $30 for 2 more months then i'll have enough reward tokens to get MM for free, but the whole point is I already bought CoV way back when it was released...I shouldn't have to buy the classes from that again.  Same with Controller, but I don't have any high level trollers, only MM.

I'm just saying that in Lotro I never had to rebuy my level 50 warden or runekeeper when it went f2p, why should I have to rebuy MM?  I do have a lifetime sub with Lotro, but even if I didn't I wouldn't have had to rebuy them.  It's totally cheap of them to do it.  The only thing I shouldn't have access to is anything released after CoV released, I'd be perfectly fine with that.

  • CyrosphereCyrosphere Member Posts: 105

Holding people's characters and loot ransom is not how you do proper microtransactions, but I'll give NC the benefit of the doubt for now as this is their first real F2P game ... experiment (ignoring DR as it's now dead). Making people want to pay for new and better loot is one thing, completely revoking everything they've earned to date is borderline unacceptable. Guess they haven't figured out that positive reinforcement is several times more effective than negative coercion.

I just threw down $40 on TF2 hats and trinkets this past week without a second thought, but I'm having difficulty justifying sub money for CoH if this is the business principle they wish to promote. That said, I'll be waiting until they work out the bugs in the system before I commit any sub or micro money because it's a bit of a mess right now.

Remember, it has to be fun to be a game. Grinding is a bedroom activity, and the point is definitely not to do my wife as fast as possible.
