How does my time count?

  • Yes all of your previous paid subscription time is counted towards Veteran Rewards

  • Yes all your future (hey I bought a 12 month sub!) time is counted towards Veteran rewards.

  • Example I have a 6 month sub, and I just renewed with a 12 month sub... That means you get all the rewards up to 18 months!

How does the merchant work?

  • Once you unlock the merchant you can summon him wherever you want in the world.

  • Any player can buy / sell items just like any normal merchant.

  • Veteran merchant is a gold based store, and does not require special currency.

  • Merchant has special items that can only be purchased if you have unlocked that veteran level.

  • Items can (and will) be updated over time to deliver new rewards!

Rewards, Rewards, Rewards!

  • The included list of rewards is only the inital offering, and also does not include ALL of the items availible for purchase (just some of the highlights).

  • There will be additional items like vanity pets / mounts availible from the veteran merchant.

  • There will be unique items (like the vanity armor suits) as well as refresh items from your favorite events. This gives veterans an oppertunity to pick up popular event items they may have missed that no longer drop.

  • Additional utility consumables like XP potions / PAXP potions etc, are something we are looking into for future updates. Since the Planar Attunment system is new we wanted to make sure that the system settled in and got tuned appropriately before we gave people a way to boost their progression through it.

As a whole we're pretty excited about the Veteran's reward system and are looking forward to updating it over time with all sorts of new an exciting rewards. Until then please keep the feedback coming!

    Just more bribes.

Most of us got bribed and "special" offered out already.

Hmmm.. you pay upfront for three months, six months or a year and then Trion calls you a veteran even if you have no idea what a "rift" is and never created a character?

Sounds like more spin to get sorely needed subs like the "RIFT Half Birthday" event. This company seems to be making up things as they go along in order to bribe folks to join.

That's not a good sign imo. I'm guessing FTP and cash shop by next summer at this rate with 50 servers already shut off from the world for months.

    back in 2004,

SOE did the same thing with Everquest vet rewards

and everquest is -still- not f2p

its basically an incentive to pay months in advance

I think I'll mark this date in history. The date someone pointed to something SOE did in the past to justify what their gaming company did as okay business tactic. Pretty sure this is a first.

But the more interesting thing is that in 2004, Everquest was already FIVE years old when they did this to shore up dropping subs.

RIFT is barely six MONTHS old and has to do this.

    Very well said.

I think Trion is trying to get people to stick around through the release of ToR, SW, and possibly even GW2.

This is my opinion now as well.

SWTOR just announced launch. Trion knew it was coming this year as did everyone else (don't think Trion execs don't know "moles" inside of EA and Bioware that they talk to. All companies have that)

The plan itself wouldn't necessarily be bad to VETERANS if it was just that. Then the excuse of "they are just being nice to us for playing" would be feasible. But the fact that this program is extended to people who've never even HEARD of a "RIFT" before is the tip-off. How do you reward someone for being a loyal customer when they aren't a customer to begin with?

As far as a business practice, I think it's a great financial ploy; convince people you are doing them a 'favor' when you don't really have to by making them lock into three month, six month or one year longterm contracts. Kind of like how cellphone companies give you a "deal" on a phone with a contract.. they are just being nice and rewarding you for being a "veteran", right?

It's business Sun Tzu. If you take money out of the market before your competitor can get to it, that's one more person monetarily invested with you longterm so they are less likely to spend additional money again against you.

Even if they hate your product eventually (plenty of people paid for 6 months and stopped logging in at three), they are still more likely to remember they got 'burnt' and less likely to lock in longterm with your competitor.

I actually can appreciate the level Trion's business saavy and shrewdness and think they rival SOE in terms of making things appear one way and going the other way in order to generate revenue.

So far, Trion hasn't seemed willing to just sit back and enjoy a modicum of success, but rather continues to actively campaign to keep subscribers and gain new ones. This is not a bad idea for any gaming company.

Trion is offering people who have never played the game Veteran status for buying a sub.

I said I don't have a problem with that (it's their company and their supposed to make money off people who will pay it). But it dishonest to pretend you're giving people who've never played "a break and being nice" when they've never played the game yet get rewards someone without a package deal but played for months already can't get.

I already know rewards are different and that chum, isn't the issue. /headinhands

The issue is pretense that someone who's never played will be a Veteran. That's just screwy, lol.

But hey, if it fills 60 dying servers.. good deal. It's all about selling it.

I love the amount of logic fail in the posts in this thread.

Let me spell it out for you.

If you pre purchase a 12 month sub to a game.  And said game has veteran's rewards.  You are already locked in for 12 month, so, why does it matter if you get your 12 month "veteran" reward at the end of your 12 months or at the start?

Frankly its a sound and VALID business practice.  The real issue at hand is the use of the word "veteran".

I am one of those people who started Rift Day 1 of early start with a pre order and i paid for a 6 month sub, and believe me, i've gotten my money's worth out of it.  And saving 33% off a normal MMO monthly fee was definitely worth it.  I bring this up because i have absolutely NO PROBLEM whatsoever with them giving people "veteran" rewards ahead of time for purchasing multi-month subs.

Why?  Because it gives me people to play with, and if they pay for 3 or 6 or 12 months and decide to quit. Then thats still money Trion gets to use for future development, etc.  So either way its a win win for current players and a win win for new players.  Basically its just a big pot of win.

As one of the players that started in Beta 3 and ended up getting and cancelling a 6mo subscription at launch, I'd totally play this game as a F2P just to level via PvP from the 20s bracket up to 49. Unfortunately endgame leaves much to be desired.

  • itchmonitchmon Member RarePosts: 1,999

played in the beta, had a 3 monther at release, quit after that.

just resubbed, but it had nothing to do with any rewards, just had to do with the fact that they have been making improvements to the game and i think that it's worth my subscription bucks.

So trion is offering vet rewards for length of play and it will also add time bought for continuing sub. I play rift, I like it. Doesn't bother me bit.
Why on Earth do the people who either A. Hate rift , or. B. No longer play, even care???
It's not affecting whatever it is your playing now does it?

do you all have to be so MMORPG.COM-ish? In terms of mentality?  :)

Why bash a gift / promo / vet or even """vet""" reward? AoC does the exact same crap, and also from very early on..for the exact same reasons..other games before them did the same too, once they no longer had the subs deemed 'expectable', or feared they would not..it's a form of offer, and a welcome unexpected bonus to those that did or would have subbed regardless..what is your problem? Anything is better than nothing, i welcome the gesture personally, just as i have welcomed their professionalism in other areas where so far only few had managed..It doesn't matter if you like the game or not, i never even bothered with it..that's your issue, or mine.. still props to them for giving things..we are too rational to be tempted by such bull,or so i would hope for you,so this will only affect those already paying..and good for them!

chill out,and quit your "sandbox" "OpPvP"s behaviours..your mentality is beginning to show in other, non-game related areas.. :)
