Since there are no seamless open world  old school EQ like mmorpg's coming out in the near future i would say Vanguard will not change .

Most interesting thing tonight.  Newly created computer:  Go to download VG off of SOE's site.  It installs a VG icon that I have never seen before.  Since 2007 its always been a black icon with some type of shield.  Now on the new computer it installs a set of swords.  The patcher looks like one I have never seen before either.  Its a blue screen patcher which I've never seen before either.  Anyone else?

I think it's a safe bet that if you're still playing Vanguard at this point, you probably aren't too interested in the next round of MMO releases.

You should never say that, I have heard interests from VG playing friends about both AA and GW2.

But I don't think it will be a huge impact, if 10% of the players started to play one of them instead it wont make SOE close the game down.

The only release really mattering to VG is EQ Next. I can imagine SOE closing VG when they release it, I never felt that SOE themselves were that much interested in VG from the start and it isn't unlikely that EQN will have the best from both earlier EQ games and VG in it.

I agree with Lokee.  The type of player that likes VG is the type of player that is more likely to be interested in EQNext.  Doesn't mean they couldn't be interesed in TOR or GW2, but it's hard to believe that gamers who like the more hardcore experience that is VG would be all that interetested in the much, much more casual style TOR and GW2.

Yea like i was saying , the only game that will proly have a large impact on  Vanguard would be another game like it , and EqNext is really the only thing on radar in the near future .

ArchAge maybe, but I doubt GW2 will satisfy VG players.  From the looks of things, the game is going to be the most thempark oriented casual themepark of them all.

Not saying that's a bad thing, but I can't see that appealing to VG players.  I'd say they're interested in it simply because it looks like something different.

I just shut that comp down but I will try to take a screenshot tomorrow and post it.  Also, the game downloaded in 5.3GB from the patcher.  I thought it was the trial only so I logged into my other characters.  Every zone loaded fine.  I thought VG was like 17 GB?

Since the world is so big, they likely made it so that you either download in the background or as you go.

If EQ-Next sounds any good i would give it a try even i distrust SOE deeply but VG, well, you get burned once and it hurts forever.

5.3 gb - is compressed size. After decompression it is about 20 gb.

it has a ver y low player base, if 5 men and his dog, Barry, can keep it going, then yes.

    SW:TOR certainly has its appeal.

    Sadly its Star Wars.

Not that I dont like SW once in a while, but playing it all the time ? Meh.

Compared to the richness of classic fantasy, always only Jedi is very boring.

The 15 classes of Vanguard offer a lot more variance than what I've learned about the 24 SW:TOR classes(*)

    (*) Counted like this:

    - There are 8 starter classes in SW:TOR, 4 Republic, 4 Empire

    - Every Republic class has a mirrored Empire class with different skill names, but exactly the same functionality, thus the actual number of available classes is always half of this

    - Each starter class splits into 2 so-called "advanced class"-es, resulting in 8 effective classes per side

    - Each advanced class is actually 3 classes in one, meaning you get 3 skilltrees and depending upon which skilltree you put points in, the final setup is very different, to the extreme of some classes may turn full tank or full healer if you skill the right tree, but will be pure dds if you skill another tree.

    - Thus, ignoring the possibility to make inferior hybrids that havent fully skilled one skilltree, but instead distributed points all over the place, there are 24 classes in SW:TOR

I figured that, but they never used to compress it as far I remember.

I dont think the developers "get it" yet as far as what the players want.  Therefore I dont think the new releases will take much if anything away from VG. ---- its kind of like saying another 'stimulus' will work this time around.

The qualities that VG has are being phased out of existence as far as AAA MMOs go. I think there is a niche there and we will see if SOE can do something with VG ( there have been hints ) to capture it.

I play DDO as well and its humming along with tons of content updates while the rest of the MMO space waits for the next big thing(s) to come.

DDO = another niche old school MMO

VG doesn't cost SOE much to keep it running, so I don't see SOE shutting it down.  As long as there are people that are willing to pay for a game that hasn't seen development in over a year, they'll keep that game turned "ON" because it's like free money to them.

Games that have higher expenses, with development team and such, have more to worry about when newer around of MMO's release.  They stand to lose more, thus having a bigger chance of hurting and shutting down.

What little I heard to far about EQ Next wasnt very exciting.

An EQ1 reloaded ? I havent even played the original ... and not going to, those graphics you can see of it are much below my tolerance level, even if the game was awesome.

If Asherons call can survive I see no reason why Vanguard can't.  My server in AC has only 607 people on peak time.

Exactly ...600+ on one server is enough to actually enjoy the game.

Right now Vanguards population seems to decrease again though. Much less lowbies around than just some weeks ago.
