greatest mmorpg ever cancelled -POLL

herculeshercules Member UncommonPosts: 4,925

which is the greatest mmorpg ever cancelled?

note the game MUST  have been launched as a retail to qualify thus please do not say games like wish or dragons empire that never made it to a retail launch.

    Tabula Rasa*

TCoS was pretty cool as well. Had a really unique feel to it. It "just" needed more (buzzword warning) Polish TM.

Tbh I could have stomached down all the randmo bugs, if there was more content and endgame to it. But I gotta agree, the game beyond level 30 felt unfinished.

You should have 2 categories for SWG. They effectively cancelled SWG with the horrible upgrades long ago. However, I would not vote for just "SWG " as you currently have it, because I could care less about the game getting cancelled as it is in it's current state.

As it stands ... other , SWG classic.

I never got to play it,  But I hear a lot about how good E&B was.  So out of this list (lol Matrix) thats the only one I could select.

TCoS, it had potential and was different but missed something.

SWG and TR were not bad either (in SWGs case that was a few years ago though).

But there is a reason every single game on the list got cancelled (except SWG) and that is that they never attracted the players they should. One way or another they never delivered even if some of them had potential.

I still can't understand how The Sims online could fail, it should have been huge. I guess they should have made it browser based and put it in facebook instead.

    I agree...

Nothing can ever be more true than that.

Tabula rasa without a doubt. I miss this game.

SWG (now) is the one that got canceled. So that doesn't take the vote.

Old sandbox SWG is like that girl in highschool you thought was kind of cute and had a lot of potential, until one day you go to school and she is dressed up like a whore wearing all sorts of makeup trying to look like the most popular girl in class (WoW).

Tabula Rasa.  I'm mostly sad about this one because I wasn't able to run it very well on the rig that I had when the game was out.  By the time I had a system to run it well, it was closed.  I read plenty about it and was ready to play it even more.

Every single one of those deserved to be cancelled although I liked the idea of Auto Assault.

E&B, if nothing else for the unrestricted exploration that they allowed.  They actually let you pick an arbitrary direction and warp off, and in several areas there were things to find that weren't otherwise marked.  Contrast it to EVE where you have to have a resolved location before being able to even engage your warp drive.

Tabula Rasa and to some degree Auto Assault.  Tabula was a good game, and the cancellation always has a smack of boardroom politics and in-fighting about it, rather than a lack of success.

Although the game didn't really do it for me I really like the idea behind Auto Assault.

    Yep. Tabula Rasa.

Given that this poll is closely timed to SWG's cancellation, i'm guessing that'll heavily sway the results.

Given the NGE, SWTOR and all the other things that had been done to SWG, I think it was less cancelled and more "put out of its misery".   SWG was - by far - the most ambitious, progressive, innovative and full-of-potential MMO ever made.  But all that was abandoned long before it was cancelled, so I do not lament the cancellation.

TR on the other hand, while not nearly as ambitious, was just really fun.  It also achieved a level of gameplay immersion that was much higher than any I had previously experienced in a themepark game.  The world just felt sooooooooo alive and moving and full of action.   It truly was a visceral experience to play.   So I voted for TR.  It had it's problems - the prime among them being the lack of difficulty - but it was still a total blast.   It's pretty much the only game that i would immediately resub to if  i found out that it was coming back.  I also felt that it was cancelled far too quickly.  Should had a better chance to fix itself.

Tabula Rasa for sure.  It was one of those games that was definitely ahead of its time,  even with the wonky-ish crosshairs... all it needed was some balancing for the PvE and some expanded PvP and it could have been a major Sci-Fi contender.

It already had a kind of Dynamic Event system that RIFT is now using...  it could have been built on so much better.

Chronicles of Spellborn was the most interesting for me. Truly innovative MMO with unique world and combat. Too bad it had stupid publishers

  • mattidoremattidore Member Posts: 31

Why did Acclaim have to ruin Spellborn??!!! The active combat was sooo fun!! Better than face rolling through 1 ~ 9... ='(

I had to decide between Tabula Rasa and Matrix?  Now that's tough.

I chose Matrix, but only because it's the underdog of the two, and I'm a huge fan of the IP, and because it was SOE who dumped it *grumble grumble*.

    Spellborn.

That game had unlimited potential. It could've been something amazing.

    I said "other" for Vanguard.

I know it's not technically cancelled, but no life was ever breathed in to it after that initial crap release. The game has been dying for years. I really saw some true brilliance in it.

I find it unplayable now because of the small player base and imminent demise. Too bad...

    Probably Tabula Rasa..

Though I think Asheron's Call 2 had some pretty cool aspects about it,I miss my bongo toting, lightning flinging Lizard char :)

    Spellborn!

The game and it's setting was just too far away from the mainstream for the average gamer, but also more than it's developerstudio could handle. Imagine this game by now having like 2-3 addons already, it would be so awesome.

Frogster being a worse publisher than any game could handle then put the fork in it by absolutely NOT publishing it. They just didn't gave a sh** because ROM just went live at that time.
