I tried today to log into my LotRO account to discover that, despite over a month of inactivity, I have been banned without so much as an email from Turbine to explain why. Has there been a rash of account hacking or anything of the sort? I'm, understandably, very angry about this, as I was really excited to check out the new content.

Wrong forum, I would just contact customer support and get it sorted out.
Your account might have been hacked. Happened on my account earlier this year even though I hadn't played the game in months. Just email support to get your account back open, though they probably won't help you get any lost money/items you had on your characters.
My account got hacked after a period of inactivity, too (I'm a lifetimer, but hadn't logged in for over two months). Some of my guild members noticed my character logging on, but that it didn't respond to hails. Seeing that it was in my housing development, they went there and witnessed the character being stripped of its equipment. They then reported it, and the account was banned.
I contacted customer support by email and got some instructions involving running some recommend antispyware/antivirus programs (all of which I used weekly anyway) and changing all of my passwords, which I did. I never did end up contacting them further to get the account unbanned, though. I just couldn't bear going back and trying to replace the lost gear, special housing decorations, etc.
This is what happens when more people start to play a game the gold farmers get interested. The game has gotten popular so the thieves too sit up and taken notice . This is the result they start stealing accounts to fund their nefarious activities.
If people didn't buy from the Gold farmers then they wouldn't bother with it. There always has been and always will be those who want the fast track to something in a game.
Have had my account for a very long time and have never been hacked, then again I dont buy from gold farmers and don't use the same email or passwords on any two accounts.
I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.
One of my friends account got hacked, he emailed the support and explained that he haven't been playing for 4 months.
All his gear, money mats ect was gone, Turbine gave him 500 gold to help him get back on his feet.
If it's not broken, you are not innovating.
At one point Turbine sent me an e-mail indicating that my account had been hacked and the account was frozen.
After a long amount of time on hold I finally got a customer service rep to unfreeze the account. he then told me to run malwarebytes anti malware.
I then was able to get back on my account only to find that not only was nothing taken from my characteres but none of them were moved from the spots where I left them.
My only thought was that they use some sort of software to detect being hacked or accessed and it gave a false positive.

They banned my friend for over a year accused him of buying 3000 in gold lol took him a year but he eventually got his acount back and a barely there apology. Ive had my account hacked before so has my friend to be honest i dont really know much who havent in lotro that havent at some point. The same thing happened to me i got banned no reason or anything so i call them and i get told i logged in from china LOL took about 1/2 hour got my account back. There not getting hacked b/c its getting popular theyre getting hacked b/c there security is step above SOE'S which isnt saying much.If turbone had any brains which they dont theyd just sell the gold they sell everything but that now pretty much lolz.
