I just recently got a new computer with thanks to all the help from the people on these boards and it's been great so far but their seems to be a problem with my video card. Games like Battlefield 3 and Crysis 2 are running quite great with 60+ fps so I thought maybe it was just me being paranoid but the trees in both games seem off. They are extremely blurry, and dark. On crysis I can see it improves the trees if I lower my spec so it might just be a setting but I can't figure out which one.
Here's a screenshot from Crysis 2 showing the trees.
Here's the same screen but on the gamer spec, as you can see, much sharper trees.

not a vid card problem. more of a game developer problem:D
to make their game stand out. alot of times game developers put artifical effects into their game that photographers take years of learning to remove from their pictures. a large portions of the "features" in games actually make the game look worse. blood splatter on your visor when you get shot on your foot for example.... 1 whole gallon of my blood does not travel THAT far up to my face to cover the ENTIRE visor...
what you need to decide is do you want to play the game for E-peen purpose(everything maxed) or for enjoyment purpose(only turn on the effects that looks good and improve the gameplay experience)
You know that's what I was thinking too but I looked at some footage in both games on youtube, and even at 1080p the videos were sort of blurry to get a real good indication of the trees but they still did feel sharper. That's why I thought it was perhaps a problem on my end.
Looks very similar. Could be the anti-aliasing transparency setting, or anti-aliasing gamma setting in nvidia control panel if you have an nvidia card.
notice how much worse when it's turned ON? it looks like the guy's headlight is made from 40million candlepower search lights. you cant even see the road when those lights are turned on. thats the kind of stupid effect game developers are putting into their games these days. it makes the game look WORSE and less enjoyable. but you need to spend another $1000 worth of hardware to run it at "ON"
PS. notice the tress with the ON side.
It indeed does seem to be an effect, I was able to rectify the situation in Battlefield. Don't know which setting it was but it did the trick and makes the overall quality so much sharper.
On the subject of these effects, ye im not sure why devs are going for something that is clearly making the game look worse. I remember playing champions online, with AA on the entire game would just get faded and blurry.
Looks like it's some form of Ambient Occlusion that is doing that? Either that or some sort of Depth Effect playing with the lighting levels.
There are other settings though that can cause the blurred effect on the trees such as MLAA or Transparancy AA (Or SSAA if you're into that).
Your best bet would be to go through the config file and try a few of those settings out, or have a look at the differences between the two presets.
There is also a 3rd party tool for configuring the Crysis 2 Engine rather than using the presets, it might be worth looking at that. The fact you get something similar in BF leads me to believe it is HBAO (and whatever form of it they use in Crysis 2).
Thanks, that tool is extremely useful. I don't get why games like crysis 2 and now rage aren't letting people tweak settings, its just stupid to ignore the players that were the most eager to play these games on their systems.
it's more of a marketing thing, they can put the effect in and say our game is better the game X because we have all these effects(that players can no longer turn off:D) and OUR game require an octo SLi 590GTX(that nvidia doesnt even support) to play and you only need a 580gtx in this other game X....
welcome to the world of EPEEN!!!!:D remember when oblivion 1st came out? no machine can play it well:) then crysis did the same thing:D yet those are 2 of the biggest names in the gaming industry. thats why i always laugh to myself when someone comes here and CLAIM they want to build a machine with EVERYTHING turned on at 120FPS:D (and it turned out they are using some junk 1080P monitor that cant even run 120hz:D)
Haha, to be honest I'm one of those people that barely notice a difference in graphical settings with all these ultra effects that take a huge dump on your system. And like you stated sometimes they just make the game look worse too.
