Despite the title, this is obviously only one possible way to get into Eve. I had popped in and out of Eve for years (never lasting more than a few weeks at a time) until I read this article:
http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/17/eve-evolved-learning-to-let-go/
When I took his advice and just jumped head first into PVP from day one, I finally saw what makes Eve a fun game. On the day I resubbed, I just started a fresh character rather than go with the older ones that I had played for a few weeks here and there. That same day, I tracked down a large pvp corp through the corporation finder and joined, jumping right into PvP. They provided me with free ships to roam in, and gave me clear roles in which I could contribute.
In one of my previous experiences I had tried to join Eve University. I highly recommend that you don't bother with them, despite their claiming to be a noob-friendly corp. I've had actual university exams that required less work than joining their corp. If my experience is any indication, it's not hard at all to find a no-bullshit corp that knows you want to just PvP and have fun, not memorize some big list of rules dreamed up by their nerdy CEO.
I'm a month in to the game now and have 93 PvP kills. I do planetary interaction bearing for isk so that I never have to do missions, ratting, or PVE of any kind. Other than the few minutes I spend every day doing the PI stuff, all I do when in game is PvP.
Now I "get it".

This has been my problem as well. I have re-subbed to this game many times and end up logging in, setting skills and that is it. I am going to follow your advice and read the article and try again based in what you have done.
I have really wanted to like this game as I am just so tired of the same old fantasy mmo spoon fed crap out there.
Any chance ya wish to share what corp it was you joined? PM me even?
Thanks!
Good read, the only way to "get" into eve is to pvp as early as possible. And by that I mean after you can properly fit a T1 frigate, which should take you 2-3 days. PVPing early have no real risk, clones, ships, modules are cheap. You'll be more likely flying without implants attached.
This right here is the secret, and why i don't play this game even after several tries.
Join a corp and let them give you free ships to fly around in because going it alone in the game is out right painful for a starting player.
Personly though I don't like games where one of the first things to do for a fun time is join a guild.
Yeah, the last thing a person should have to do in a massively multiplayer game is make any effort to play with other people online...
Agree. This is what actually wrong with today's MMO players. If you want to play alone, go play offline games or farmville or something.
edit
So what you two are saying is the only way to play with other people is to join a guild and there is absolutely no way to group with anyone unless in a guild.
I guess it should be called Massively Guilded Online then.
Edit: BTW I'm not opposed to joining guilds, I just like to get a feel for the game and find a guild that matches me, not join the first one that'll give me free ships.
it's called a corporation in EVE. we got ISK there, not gold....just a reminder.
And yes, EVE takes some knowledge before you can go 1 vs 1 with some solo players that have been doing just that for many years; not just sub-->do 2 misisons---get a ship and let's pwn everyone else! like in certain other MMO's where gear decides 100% of the outcome of the fight.
"going into arguments with idiots is a lost cause, it requires you to stoop down to their level and you can't win"
But the problem with Eve is not that you are forced to play with other people, but that you are forced to find a group of people who are welcoming to new players, supportive etc. and that is the only way to really get into the game.
I have played Eve off an on for about 4 years and consider myself to be a social person, I play all online games to make new friends and play with others. I joined a variety of corps, but I never "got it" because none of those corps were the right one for me. In fact that last pvp corp I joined demanded a payment of 1m ISK from all members and kicked anybody out who didn't pay....rough on new players. The employment history also means you can't try a variety of corps until you find the right one, because after a while you have been in a handful of corps for short periods and when you try and move to a new one the corp you are applying to look badly on your history (in the majority of cases).
So my point is it's all about the corp and the right corp, otherwise the game is dull in the extreme. Great if you find that corp like the OP, but my Eve experience was the opposite and in the end I quit out of boredom.

You need not to join a player corp, never ever. It is a choice with pros and cons like any other. If you wish to play lonely or just corpless, you can do it just fine, the game fully supports such gameplay.
Corporations are no more than tools that can be used in various ways.
