You can hate me all you want, but I besides having rifts appear I find the game a boring grind.
Basically it's filled with "kill this" and "collect this" kinds of quests.
Actually I find the rifts and raids annoying a large part of the time because when you're trying to do quests mobs just appear out of no where.
No matter where you travel rifts and raids are everywhere.
It makes trying to travel really fun.
The huge problem is also there just isn't enough players so when they do have their huge dynamic events where rifts spread across the whole map and you're getting raided by all kinds of mobs it takes forever to stop.
The idea is new and fun and everything, but like I said the only thing it has going for it is the rifts which a lot of times gets in the way of doing your quests or simply trying to travel.
If you're a player who likes to explore in mmo's good luck trying to do that in Rift without getting swambed by 100's of mobs.
The world is literally covered in mobs EVERY WHERE, and 99% of them attack you, which is one of the first mmos where I have seen so many mobs that aggro a player.
Also expect to die, not just a couple of times, but a LOT of times!
One of my biggest problems with this game is the opening fools you into thinking there's going to be more cut scenes.
I enjoyed the beginning story told through cut scenes so I was a bit disapointed when there was nothing like that after the beginning of the game.
I know mmorpgs don't have to have cut scenes to be good, but it helps a lot.
Now, I may be mistaken, but it doesn't seem like Rifts playerbase is that large.
You can't even do the first dungeon because no one wants to do it, giving me the idea that everyone who does play Rift is mainly over level 22 (the first dungeon is level 15-22).
In my opinion I don't think Rift will last in the mmo market as long as some people seem to think it will.
Now this isn't a hate thread.
I enjoyed Rift for a while, but I'm not keeping my subscription going for it.
I usually never get bored of a p2p game this fast, but Rift got me there faster for some reason.

It's like you wrote an anti-advertisement.
Happens I agree with you, though.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

Wasn't trying to.
It just gets boring fast.
Some people may like it though, but compared to having playing WoW and Rift, WoW was more fun for me (even though I don't play that one anymore either. Catalsym ruined it for me.).

You can read this allover many forums, it's one of the most common conclusion former players have drawn after experiencing Rift.
The game is a shallow rush-through with no staying power, resulting in high fluctuation of players and decreasing playerbase. Trion is working on the staying-power now, which is a tad late if you look at the populations. They seem to have lost the memo with the mmorpg 101 on it, saying that a game has to offer something
1. that makes it worth to stay and play at max level
or if 1 is not the case, at least
2. high replayability.
The game could have been a 1mio+ blockbuster easily. But the "so experienced team" of TRION, with their "veteran developers who worked on and released so many major titles" repeated just too many absolute noobish mistakes.
Is there a reason why you didn't post this generic complaints rant on the Rift's forum? Well the mods would move it eventually.
As for me... I don't share your complaints with Rift's rifts because I play on the High-Medium pop EU PvP server Whitefall, so I don't have any population issues, the rifts I ignore but the zone wide invasions are generally a fun distraction for the dull linear quest grind. They only become a problem when I end up experiencing 5-8 zone events, in one zone, in a single day. That's just overkill. Well i play Rift mostly for the endgame dungeons.
Personally, I do not like cut-scenes. So I had no problem with there not being more. If I want to "watch" something, I drop a movie in or I stream something. I'm playing games to play them - not watch them...
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

It is a wow clone with useless crafting, ugly armor, and too much depency on other players to get good gear. Unless you are in a large dedicated guild... You are not getting shit. This game is finished.
I tried coming ack after the new patch... Just more of the same meaningless nonsense. Servers are still empty,
The next mmo to be deleted off my pc. It gets too boring way too fast.
That's my problem right there you see.
Silverwood is constantly having "zone events".
It gets tiring and boring pretty fast.
Also because of population (or lack of) the zone wide events just drag on.

It is funny how different my reasons for leaving appear to be compared to those of others. I did not get bored in the least. Played through seven months (headstart, free month, 3 months, 3 month resub)...
...I left because of the dev incompetence in regard to creating a FotM stew without learning from their mistakes. How on Earth they did what they did with Warriors after what they did with Mages...only to go on to do what they did to Rogues after what they did with Warriors and Mages. It was like WoW devs on crystal meth... seven years of FotM garbage done in seven months.

Well that was just kind of one of those things where it was a bonus with the many reasons of why I am not continuing to subscribe to Rift.
Many games chop up classes from the beginning these days (not that that's an excuse).

Also the graphics are okay, but for a p2p game I want better graphics than what they give me, and please don't get me started on how ugly the characters and clothes are in Rift.

I agree with you on this about Rift, only thing i enjoy about Rift is the open world PvP. i running around ganking people. Great way to kill time waiting for GW2
GW2 can't come soon enough for me.
I tried playing Rift to distract me, but even that failed haha.

You know, in order to provide uptodate graphics you better don't start out cheap chosing your game's engine.
But except for the animations and objects popping up out of nowhere at 50m distance, i really like the graphics in Rift. It's rather the world design that doesn't hook me. To me, the zones seem like a random conglomerate of hills and trenches with pathways through them. There are great, authentic feeling game worlds (if that makes any sense in a fantasy game) in many games. Telara is not one of them.
The many purple colored trees and foliage is what gets me.
Are we in an Avatar movie or something?

What level did you get to and how long did you play before writing your review? It gives me the impression you played only to mid 20's.
For me, It wasn't until mid 30's that I really began enjoying Rift and level 50 before I found that the game had really just begun.
What about the Normal and Expert Dungeons, the pvp, the Rift running, the Solo/Duo level 50 instances and to me the best part.. raiding?
Stillmoor, IPP and Shimmersand - raiding or dungeons instances are where a majority of the players are sitting now... and yes, most are well over level 25... since the game did launch back in March.
For the "short term" gamer who wants to see all the bells and whistles up front - similar to a single player game, Rift probably isn't the best choice. For those who are looking for a long term MMO, enjoy playing with others, are impressed with steady and reliable PVE progression, then Rfit is an excellant choice.
Rift is cute.
If you like theme park MMORPGs, you will most likely like Rift.
The graphics are fine albeit not awes, the music and sound effects are so-so. One thing that is for as many people a huge advantage and for many also a huge mistake is, that the game is designed to have no replayability. You play up a maximum of four characters, and even that way you have to do the same content at least twice. If you want all four chars in the same faction, you have to do exactly the same content four times. There are no alternate ways to level up, you go always the same path.
The good thing about that is: each char is rather versatile. You can buy different talent specs pretty soon, and most classes can tank, heal or support, and all can deal damage. And every now and then, you buy a new talent spec and try out a different type of gameplay with that char.
So, if you don't mind running through exactly the same content several times, and like theme park MMORPGs, then the game is fine. Oh, and the problem is of course: since the content is quite boring (99% of all quests are "kill / loot x of y" or "walk to x and speak with y") people don't want to go through the content more than necessary. As such, the early levels are quite deserted.
I was sometimes playing during the prime time, selected as roles in the dungeon finder "healer, support, damage dealer, any dungeon", and could wait half an hour before I found a group.
Also communication is a minimum. Even in some dungeon groups people don't talk a single word, and the chat is empty as well. You sometimes see people running by, but since they are after different quests, there is no reason to quest together. You sometimes meet people when you fight on a Rift, but there is no need for communication either. Even in the main cities, people use the max level chat channel. So if you ain't max level: you hear no single word... in the capitals of the game.
Still, some things ain't bad. IF you manage to team up with someone, doing some of the group quests is fun, or doing well enough on a Rift to complete it on a high difficulty. Though it's hard to find people, because everyone is on different quests, and there are not many people around anyway, because they clump up on max level.
Oh, and the idea with artifacts is cute. Sometimes you see tiny things lying around, and when you pick them up, they are items that belong to certain sets, which tell a bit of a background story or something. If you complete a set you can turn it in for rewards.
So, all in all it's high quality, good graphics, some nice ideas, versatile characters. But also few players on low levels, no replayability, boring quests.
Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)
The whole macro thing the game has is retarded and makes end game a one button spam fest. Rift sure did have the potential and great content additions.
But Trion neither has the time left nor the needed ability to bring the game up to it's potential.
It's about a death sentence for Rift that they released this game as small as it is in every aspect and instead of putting all manpower onto it, they rather fiddle with two more projects in the making.
Prop's; the first opinion thread I ever saw to not mention WoW in the first post.
+1
Played - M59, EQOA, EQ, EQ2, PS, SWG[Favorite], DAoC, UO, RS, MXO, CoH/CoV, TR, FFXI, FoM, WoW, Eve, Rift, SWTOR, TSW.
Playing - PS2, AoW, GW2
Disagree. With new and meaningful content being added every 4-6 weeks Rift is doing quite well. The servers are strong and if anything, it is growing.
Forums show players who in other games normally would not have, post they are subbing for a year in advance. In addition, shard populations remain strong.
As for other projects.. Sony, Blizzard, Bioware All had/have multiple projects. It doesn't mean anything. Those two projects have been there since Rift beta - and to me, Rift was the most polished mmo released, in the last decade anyways.
Testing for new content release Update 1.6 on the public test shard -the day after- Update 1.5 comes out, indicates they are moving forward at a pretty steady pace.
Death sentence? Hardly.
Moving from Earth to Water to Death to Fire etc.,... 'rifts' doesn't = content, imho.
The game has moments where it is fun. But overall, I don't see any great level of 'depth'. I certainly don't see the longevity.
I'm still subbed.
I can't say that I play all that much anymore. Maybe 3-4 hours a week? I just don't see much in the game that warrants more time than that.
That was my problem.
I got bored after the initial fasination with rifts wore off.
Then from there it just went down hill for me as I realised the only thing it had going for it was the rifts, which I soon found to be more annoying as they got in the way of me trying to do quests.
Don't even get me started about raids.
God, I never found traveling more annoying in any other mmorpg besides this one.
Smile
I agree 100%
I followed Rift for quite sometime in it's early development.. I even Beta tested the game.. For me, I was hoping It would be the true EQ2.. Unfortunately, Trion decided they'd rather make a lot of money fast, as opposed to creating a truly awesome hardcore game for hardcore fans.. I loved everything about Rift excpet for how incredibly easy mode the game was..
The problem with EZ mode mmo's is,, after a while the game just becomes a dull boring grind.. The only real challenge was the world raid events.. But, even they got boring after a while.. The dungeons were pretty cool the first couple times around, and I do admit some of them were a bit challenging, but for me, it just wasn't enough to keep my interest.. Especially after I hit 50.. It reminded me of WoW ALL OVER AGAIN... Back when I played WoW, I hit 50 in about 2 months of casual playing.. Having a GF kind of limited my playing time.. But once I hit 60, and our guild was ready to do MC, It became less and less fun after the 4th time defeating Rag.. Then after getting all Nightstalker gear, Perditions Blade, Gutripper, etc, I quit simply because there was nothing left to do...
That's the problem with MMO's today.. The Devs "CATER" to "CASUAL" players more than the hardcore players.. They try to make a game easy enough for the whiners to enjoy, and just a bit difficult enough for the true hardcore gamers to enjoy for about a month or two.. It's actually a very clever process.. They make all their money within the first couple months, then when subs start to drop, usually thats when you start to see the company's staff numbers dropping. The game makes a lot of money for those in charge, but those who busted their tails 24/7 are usually the ones ending up on the short end of the stick...
This is why I just don't understand why the devs continue to listen to their bosses on their vision of how the game should be shaped and molded..
I wonder If we'll ever see another hardcore MMORPG like UO and Everquest... UO being the legendary FFA, PVP, do whatever you want MMO, and EQ being the king of all PVE MMO's.. EQ was great because of how challenging and time consuming to achieve anything was.. You had hell levels starting at 30.. Quests that would literally take months to complete... End game content that started with just VOX and Naggy raids,, but the entire experience was awesome to be a part of... And the community for the most part were awesome to be assoiated with somply because the true fans were those who simply loved and enjoyed the fantasy genre...
People back then didn't choose to play the game simply because of one aspect like pvp.. They chose to play because these people not only enjoyed the Genre, but they enjoyed everything there was about the game, it's lore, the races, classes, etc..
This is what makes a MMORPG truly great... Unfortunately, Devs today are to afraid to stand up to their bosses in fear of being terminated.. So, what has been the result the last 7 years???
Failed MMORPG's.......

Rift was very good and extremely addicting back in beta.
It made you look forward to each new phase.
Then the nerfs started -- characters were forced down specific paths instead of being able to freely mix and match. Hybrids were frowned upon.
Then release came and it was fun for a while... Before they did two big nerfs one right after another -- completely shattering what my character could do best -- survive rifts...
Thing is though at max level there was no real reason to do the rifts anymore...
It became all about doing the dungeons in groups...
And farming faction...
And then the faction gains got nerfed. And the plates needed increased and the plates you gained decreased.
And my will to play waned to the point where I moved on.

I still have a soft spot for rift as it could have been. Sure giving lots of choices to people would lead to some people being relatively overpowered, but it was fun. It had a large world to explore for the collectables (and I went to some really oddball places getting so many blue ones). The rifts/invasions themselves were fun. They just were not rewarded at the end.
So the choices were turned into "play our way for balance sake" and the game became a pure grind at the end where even the equipment became a "play our way" thing. You need toughness 200 for X so you need this set of gear even if it lowers the stat you are trying to work on.
They should have left it open and free and had real rewards even if they were rare for defending the world from the invaders.
