I saw a Rift ad on a bus today

JoliustJoliust Member Posts: 1,329

In Madison Wisconsin this morning I saw Rift banner on the side of a metro bus. I have never seen a physical ad for a game around here ever. Save in a store near the electronics.

Sent me an email if you want me to mail you some pizza rolls.

I wonder if most of the people who saw it even understood what they were seeing.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Did the banner promise a free bus token if you bought a 12 month sub?

edit:  A Google of it shows folks talking about ads in Austin too, lol.  Kind of funny, eh?

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

That was my guess. They are trying to pull a WoW and hack into a new market segment. Get non gamers or non mmoers to look up what it is, maybe try it out.

Ha, no it just had the name Rift in their typical font. Then a minimalistic version graphic they had on the banners here. You know the tentacles coming from the rift and the dude standing there.

Have to figure with the amount of people that are sporting web enabled phones at this point, they'll see it - look it up.  Maybe talk to somebody about it.

I mean, c'mon - think about the We're not in Azeroth commercials that aired during the Super Bowl...

I read your title as, "I saw a Rift on a bus today" which would have made for a far more entertaining read, you got to admit.  Tiny Rift opens on bus, everyone stands up and starts fighting what comes out.  Probably without saying anything, and you know that woman with the librarian glasses is going to ninja all the loot, but still...

But this is a bus ad. It seems so.... strange.

That's excellent.  I'm glad they are pushing the promotions further than just players of other MMOs.

I wonder if 10 years from now people will be running around saying "Oh, that's just a Rift clone"

This brings up a strange point in regard to games, eh?  The sheer number of fantasy games we have - set in what could only be called (early times).  We have some games set in space - literally in space - not much as far as the ground pounding goes.  We have some post apocalyptic attempts.  But when it comes to "modern" games... hrmmm.  One of the reasons I'm keeping an eye on TSW from time to time...

...but imagine if RIFT had been set as a "modern" game instead of a "fantasy" game.

Imagine rifts opening around your town, city, etc...

Suppose CoH is set in a pseudo modern era...

Hrmm, then again - CoH also has dynamic events.  CoH also has a pretty diverse "class" system.

    So er, never-er-mind.

I heard that Trion is going to start hiring homeless people with sandwich-board signs to stand at intersections as well.  Brilliant marketing by those Trion guys.  They are so revolutionary.

And then youngins will be saying. No WoW did everything before Rift, Rift is just a copy of WoWs innovations. Those of us who played MMO's before will have all hung or drunk ourselves to death by then.

TSW's setting has me interested, too.  Not at all a Lovecraft fan (I made the mistake of reading some of his nonfiction quotes for one thing, he was a rancid bigot).  I'm not even a huge horror theme fan.  But anything that gets me away from fantasy in all its overdone incarnations has me at least somewhat interested.  Fantasy was never my first choice in MMO genres to begin with.  Sci fi was, and still is.
