That person then reports everyone who posts a negative comment in the thread. I agree trolling should be a punishable offense but so should "smurfing" (loved that answer).
There is a difference between posting negative comments about a game and posting negative comments in order to get a rise out of people. For example: I find that the art design for the avatars and gear in LOTRO are not very inspired. I have no problem with a more realistic appoach and prefer it with this IP, however, the design of these items could have been done better and they don't seamlessly fit in with the beautiful world that Turbine created. Additionally I don't feel an overwhelming sense of "lord of the rings" or "middle earth" and sometimes the game just feels like a bland version of "x fantasy game". On top of that the f2p model is a bit too much in one's face and at time it feels like I'm always being sold to. or LOTRO sucks, the avatars look like a kindergartner made them and what a** came up withthe brilliant idea to make all the weapons glow with radiation. Only a moron would play a game that had such sucky stuff. Turbine clearly wasted the IP and are only kept in business because idiots flock to the game like sheep because if their new "pay to win" loser model. They make me sick.
While this could be an attempt to get someone in an argument, you have to understand that not everyone posting has the vocabulary, tact, writing skill or even DESIRE to place things so "nice" as you did in your first example. Some human being were simply raised coarse and gruff; or in other words "they tell it like they see it".
They may only possess a 10th grade education because they've spent their lives working with their hands or in the military where language, talk and comments like that are commonplace. Or they may simply be teenagers who are playing MMos and this is how they express things in terms of absolutes as in.. things either "suck" or they "rock".
I think this is something more educated individuals don't take into account and assume that people just reply "Fargin APB sucks my left nut" as an intentional troll. Sure some are but not understanding the internet is made up of a wide variety of individuals who come from different walks and cultures of expression is a mistake.
This is why "unicorns" have to understand when someone says your game "sucks hard", they are not saying YOU suck hard. It's just how they express themselves so attacking that person back with personal insults about their spelling, their grammar, their choice of words, or even their age is wrong.
As far a moderators go, this is where I feel most fail on any site. They will ban a poster from trolling as being "immature" but rarely ban the unicorn who started the PERSONAL flamefest.
Yea nice vid hehe, The Troll Troller , but it explains what is a troll quite good, but the main question is is the OP a Troll trying to provoke discussion/reaction pretending not to know or is it a honest internet newby .. am I now Trolling him ? .. ..

Trolling is when you post something to elicit responses or upset people for the "fun" of it and no other reason.
I suppose the opposite of trolling would be if you posted something and tried as hard as you could to make sure no one would respond to it lol .
ZOMG, I'm an anti-troll. Most of what I write is so insignificant (although on topic) it deserves no response.

Is there a category for when a fanbois posts misleadingly positive information about an inferior product? Why is it when you post specific examples of why you dont like a game you are trolling and the fanbois can report your post but it is ok for them to post misleading stuff in order to trick people into paying for a game that is terrible?
The opposite is a very boring post which nobody responds to.

Sometimes you get the best responses when you lightly poke someone with a hot iron though. Ah the Spanish Inquisition...some of the biggest trolls history has ever known. NOBODY EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION (Thats why they're such good trolls!) CARDINAL! Poke them with the soft cushions!!!

Are people who take it so off topic as bad as trolls? should be the next question
Rants asside this was decided on the dwarf fortress forums in 2009.
It was decided that the opposite of a troll is a Rabbit Fan. This came about because someone made a typo when they wanted to say "rabbid fan" and the phrasing stuck. for about 6-9 months. then this was forgotten and bam, we have this thread.
BTW, typos also explain how "Woo" became "Woot" back on AOL. circa 1990.
I would have thought "anti-trolling" or "trolling the troll" could have been possible opposites, but the more I think about it, I think burning them or dipping them in acidwould just be best. At least they wouln't be able to regenerate. ;P
You sir, are a unique and beautiful snowflake. Your post is the epitome of wit and wisdom and you have set a solid example for the rest of the community. Thank you.

The bad kind of trolling is when people say something to intentionally irritate or trouble the inhabitants of a thread. Unintentional is fine. It happens. Some people don't understand that even if you are right about something, if you are irritating a thread that you kinda don't belong to and it starts to really trouble some people unfairly, it's best to just resort to cracking a joke, saying you are sorry for all the argueing if you are wrong and they are right, and move on. It's just a forum after all and it doesn't matter who wins because that isn't the point of forums. Read any forum's rules they tell you it's meant to be a happy and fun place to learn information and talk to people. Never take anyone seriously on the internet. If you have to, go make your own thread and find likeminded people to talk about your favorite things. Freedom of Speech is a good thing, but that doesn't mean you should go around using this freedom just to trouble other people (unless you're both just looking to argue, then by all means take it to a thread titled "Time To Argue" or something.
Trololo is when you do it for the lulz. Most people appreciate a good one but only when they are really funny.
Just always say sorry and joke alot and don't always have to win an argument and stick to threads with people you know or create your own and find out who likes you and then follow them. Learning takes time. Sometimes stuff dons on others at later times than some.

They are both trolling. Trolling is when you post something you know is false or misleading, and/or that you don't actually believe, in an attempt to get other people upset.
So, posting false negative information and posting false positive information are both examples of trolling, and they are the two most common forms. Another common form is acting deliberately ignorant to annoy people who try to explain things. Another commong one is picking a single thing and arguing with every single person who responds, regardless of what they say.
The only thing that isn't trolling is telling other people what you actually know or believe, and talking in a civil manner about opinions. That's it. Anything that isn't honest, civil discussion is trolling.

I like the reverse troll move, when people say things like
"SW:TOR Do you see this game succeeding? Honest opinion and no trolling please"
Any response is then the trolling. I got a 24 hr ban for saying the above statement was trolling in itself, was worth it though.
The Mod who did that was wrong on many levels.
You were right - that title is trolling in itself.
The "reverse troll" and a tactic I call "fanboi flaming" (Fanbois attempting to get a thread they don't like locked by making others lose their temper) are things that Mods need to be on top of.
Any Mod who falls for these tactics loses all respect from me. I also take it to the Admins.
It's very rare to get a Mod decision publicly overturned - but I have seen Mod 'behaviour' change based on complaints about this sort of thing.
Trolls just want attention really. It's kind of like tipping in restaurants; people only do it because they want to feel special. Replying to a troll just makes them feel like they're worth replying to.
Trolling is trying to elicit a negative response so I guess the opposite of trolling is not posting.
Somehow over the years, trolling came to also mean lurking, but in the context of this thread and the rules of most chat channels on the web, trolling is an attempt to provoke others or ellicit a negative response from others.
That's the less-used definition which comes from the fishing term.
Mostly it still means trying to a elicit negative (usually through inaccurate or wildly stupid posts.)
So the opposite of trolling would be posting in an attempt to elicit positve responses through fact-centric posting...but since that's not as catchy as the joke responses, I doubt this post will get much attention
