As for class, I prefer sneaky and really flashy classes. Thieves, rangers, swashbucklers and similar classes but again, it can be anything except pure healers, I just don't like being that defensive.

But my EQ2 main is a dirge (bard), a buffing class and that actually works fine.

The names either comes to me or I browse out a fitting name, usually a old norse or gaelic name unless it is against the setting or the character race.

Pretty much exactly this.  I'll review lore and varous mythologies to find a suitable name with some buried meaning.  I do the same when deciding the gender but the animations and gear also play a role here.  If I do make a female, I make her look like my wife if possible, and then I pretend that'll make her not mind that I'm gaming instead of mowing the lawn :)

My first character is always someone who looks close to my avatar, and the second on a more brusque warrior-like character.

Yea this is exactly what I do.  I dont know why.  I just feel overly compelled to make the avatar look as much like me as possible.  My first one anyways.  Later I might change things around once I start making alts.

I guess I do a good job because my kids will occasionally run up and look and they always say, " Hey!  He looks just like you daddy!  Is that you?  Is that you in the game? "   and I say, " Yup...thats me." .   " You mean they actually put you in the game?" to which I respond, " Well of course they do.  Wouldnt you if you were making a game? " to which they seem to find that answer very satisfactory for some reason.

I usually pick dark anti-hero thief types, because that's my favorite play style. None of the choices really applied...

Race and lore would be the reason..

I'm usually min-maxing skills for what I'm playing.  So if I'm playing a mage, I choose a race that benefits the most for playing a mage.  If I'm playign a warrior-type, a race that promotes the more physical attributes.  It varies what I'm playing based on what will give me the most edge and what makes sense.  If I have so many characters that I'm past the min-maxing stage, then I  go for stuff I haven't played before.  Like I got a rogue in DDO, and I picked halfling not because it was the best, but because I didn't have any other halflings for any of my other chars.  The majority of my 11 alts in DDO are human or dark-elf.  Dark-elf because I don't yet have 32 point builds and Dark-elf comes with that extra plus so their 28 point build really comes out to 32 points.  I have human on 3 of them because humans come out pretty good in DDO with their extra feat and skills, so humans don't suck.

In Oblivion I was playing Bretens for the extra mana, and dark-elf also for their quickness and other decent abilities.  Oblivion I usually always played a mage who maxxed out potions first, and they became overpowered quick.  The weak fireball I recently learned could be cast multiple times and still do damage, I was casting it and prolonging fights because I thought I had to wait 3 ticks before I could cast another one.  Casting multiples of them really speeds up the combats.

In Dragon-Age I was playing a human Mage I believe.  I could be wrong.  In Everquest my main was a High-Elf Enchanter who made it to 65th level before I quit.  The reason I picked High-Elf was the high INT for spell points, and I didn't like the look of the  only other race that had more.

So usually Min-maxing comes into play, but sometimes its astetics also.   If you don't like the look of your avatar, your not going to want to keep playing him and looking at him.....   I rarely play female chars.......
