guys look RIFT.RIFT is a THEMEPARK from a small company that come out polished and finished(by mmo standards)
Now if a company like TRION(no one heard them before RIFT,or at least i didnt)can do that
Take LUCASARTS/EAs MONEY and BIOWAREs TALENT and combine them
and imagine the outcome
The only downside i see in TOR is that its a THEMEPARK(or better still an EVERQUEST/WOW style of game) and a lot of people got bored with them,i dont believe there is another reason not to like this game(unless of course if you are not interested in its style or SW)
I mentioned TRION and RIFT because there is not another good example of a polished MMO(themepark)from day one(i know that it wasnt perfect at the begining but it was miles ahead of other launches)that i know.
the reason i wrote it here is because this is the place haters come to bash so :P
I dont expect TOR to be the 2nd coming in MMO's BUT it will be surelly a very fun and enjoiable game
(to clarify,I like THEMEPARKS and WoW and i play RIFT,i just wish WoW was taking the aproach that RIFT takes and surelly BIOWARE will take...the only thing i dont like in themeparks is PVP because i find it meaningless)
Ofcouse this is all speculation and the game might be bad,but i doudt that.

Yes. I'm sure that there have never been any big blockbuster flops in gaming ever. Your logic is infallible.
Look, TOR is going to be polished as hell, that's pretty much a given (unless of course it's forced out the door too early...), but the people who don't like it aren't concerned with a lack of polish, they're concerned with a lack of gameplay innovation. Fighting bounty hunters with a lightsaber shouldn't feel or play like fighting mages with a sword, and yet the combat is standard MMO fare. This is a fundamental design decision that no amount of polish can gloss over. If you don't mind, if WoW combat with a Star Wars skin is what you're looking for, you'll probably love this game, but if you're tired of standard MMO combat, you're going to have a problem with this game no matter what the rest of it is like.
That's an awful lot of wishful thinking. You have some good points, BUT, I caution you to wait till you play the game before jumping on the SWTOR bandwagon. That goes for everyone else.
Hey, if it isn't your thing don't play it. its going to be a fun game, not for everyone, but still a fun game. there is an over arcing story for each class but also enough freedom in side quests to keep people happy. Also the Light/dark side opens and closes some quest... So i'm to understand..
I agree with you in principle. Trion's Rift was the most polished and finished MMO I have ever launched with. While it turned out not to be my regular cup of tea (still stick my head in now and then) I am encouraged to try any other game they produce based on the quality of that experience. If Tor can't pull that off the we will have an answer for the question of will-to-succeed vs. DEEP POCKET$.
There is NO miracle patch.
95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch.
Hope is not a stategy.

I don't think using another game by a completely different company is a fair comparision for anything.
People should just try it and let the game speak for itself, both haters and lovers might change their opinions based on facts then.
Hating or loving a game you never even demo:d at a Con is just guessing.
Uhm.. Rift is made by Trion. Trion is NOT a small company. They are actually quite a large company and run by people that have had a lot more experience and success making MMOs than (for example) BioWare.
Not trying to start a trion vs. bw argument or anything, just looking to educate the OP on the fact that Trion isn't just some tiny outfit with no money or experience. It's an extrenely well-funded, skilled and experienced company.

Let SWTOR speak for itself when it releases, Dont compare it to anything.
thats why i said if you are bored with that system...well i havent. When i play an MMO i try to EVERYTHING pve wise. For me pve is Quests/5mans/raids(that if i have the time)exploring/crafting,As long as game give me that in a polished way without blatant rehash of things(iam ok with reskins and stuff like that most of the times..but when it comes to big budgets like TOR or WOW for example,i dont like them)Also ofcourse it can fail BUT i dont think it will happen...as for the combat,in the medium that most MMOs have, you cant have a good ranged combat,i just cant imagine it working(i mean lasers and generally guns/firearms)GW2 is looking good on that part and might fix that but then again GW2 is a totally diferent game that TOR(albeit THEMEPARK too)Finally for combat again...i dont do PVP,i find it meaningless in games like these where GEAR>skill(And since iam not a very skilled PVPer and dont usually hunt for gear beyond the "i can tank everything fine gear" i dont see a light in the tunnel for me :P (but thats a personall matter)
iam not jumping on the BANDWAGON,iam stating things,i dont see TOR as a next generation game...,i just see it as a evolution of a working formula.like RIFT and GW2
A game that looks next generation is ARCHEAGE for example...but the whole korean style games make me skeptical
well compared to other companies for instance the one that made WAR(i know a studio but backed by EA)AOC which had a lot of funds you cant call them a behemoth, also it dwarfs infront of BIOWARE and BIOWARE is on scale with BLIZZARD

this is not a GAMEvsGAME compariston its rather a style of game that can work and not such comparison
I can't wait to see what you post after you play the game. Man December can't come fast enough so I can shout from the rooftops how ..........
Let's just say, have you ever heard the phrase "pull the wool over their eyes"? Yeah..that about sums it up.
Personally OP, I hope you post that you are very happy with your purchase afterwards. I don't think I have ever wanted any game to fail or someone to not enjoy their purchase. Guess I'm just not a negative nancy who wants everyone to not like some thing because I may not.
This is not an "OMG IT WILL AWESOMESOME or whatever thread" its "i believe the game will be a good game"thread
for me the "OMG IT WILL BE AWEOSOMESOME OMFG LOL and whatever fanboys say :P " game will be GW2 if that flops ill be dissapointed :P
iam not stupid,i remember what it was like for the post-WoW era of major titles releases. There is no wool in my eyes, why is that to hard for people to understand?
as long as the story part is up to par with BIOWARE's reputation it will be a good buy(dont bring the DA2 example,i havent played DA2 or 1 for that matter, iam a Mass Effect guy :P and i loved both of them :P )
I used the word "their" instead of "you" in my wool over their eyes phrase so as not to make you think I meant you specifically. Quit being so defensive. I'm just trying to point out that I was just like you about a month ago, all expectant of a good experience because how could it go wrong being Star Wars and Bioware....then I got to play the game and felt like I had the wool pulled over MY eyes. PM for more detail if you want.
While I agree with your ideas OP, I would caution using RIFT as an example of quality. While the game had a good degree of polish animation/graphics wise, I personally had several problems with the game at release. First, I found obvious spelling/grammatical errors in dozens of quests. Second, most of the quests were so poorly written that a 5th grader failing reading/writing could have done a better job than the "Developers" did. Third, the size of the RIFT world is tiny compared to what SWTOR is reported to be and still had barely enough content to get you through the beginning 25 levels or so before you had to start grinding mobs to fill in for the lack of quests at higher levels. All of this should have been found and fixed long before the game went live or even into the Free Beta Weekends.
I personally feel that BioWare will not be making these mistakes, but with a game of this magnatude beyond what RIFT is, the risks get multiplied as well. Here is to hoping BioWare pulls through a truly polished game.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
Whatever the question was, the answer is NO.
no to RIFT, no to WoW, no to SWToR. themeparks are boring... i hope this kind of MMO dies out.
Well, thankfully you are not the one that gets to make decisions for everyone else. I personally find most sandbox games boring beyond belief, but I would never want that type of game to die out just because I don't like them.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
That is sad that that is how you felt after trying it out. I am asuming that this will happen to some people. I am also assuming some people will jus tbuy the game bc they buy all new games and they will have the opposite happen to them.
All you did by making it "their" instead of "you" is lump your negativity into a whole group of people including the OP. Hell I may even try it and go what the f was I thinking. No one is being defensive but you won't catch me in a GW2 thread (since that seems to be your game) after a beta test saying something like what you said if I had a similar feeling after testing.
If you read your post you aparently want it to do bad so you can yell from the rooftops how right you were. Why can't you just say hey I tested it wasn't for me?
From everything i have read i think they have created a dumbed down version of wow thats not more than a co-op single player game... WIll have to wait and see i guess im not gonna pre-order this one... its a shame they had such potential as well the star war universe is massive and they could have done so much with it.... instead they choose to make a standard cookie cutter MMO with voice acting..
Again this is how i feel from everything i have seen and read.. i could be totally wong and i really really hope i am.. but there is no way im pre-ordering this, esp at the silly price they are asking..
Psst, guys--the TORWAR threads have been kind of quiet lately. You may be a couple of months late.
Two months to go before anyone gets to pull out the "told you so" card, either plus or minus. That's close enough that further discussion is rather pointless.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
Fair enough. I'm just at that stage where every hype post for SWTOR I see I just want to smack it, lol. Guess I just need to stay away from them until launch or NDA drop.
If there were no Themeparks then everyone would be playing World of Sandbox. Those same grown men would cry over how there are no Themepark games out there for them, just right after replacing their tissue box. "Oh, nobody makes games for us anymore!"
Um.....what other MMOs has Trion developed?
I thought RIFT was their first one, just like SWTOR is Bioware's 1st?
Trion is a great developer mate, but if Trion was "well funded", Bioware is the CENTRAL BANK. If Trion had "experience", Bioware is the INSTRUCTOR. If Trion is "skilled", Bioware would be the MASTER.
Now hold on a second, if by this you mean Trion has a staff full of experienced MMO devs, you may be right, but you're wrong that Bioware does not.
