Five Reasons to Consider Guild Wars 2

RevofireRevofire Member UncommonPosts: 269

http://ct-daily.co.cc/2011/10/five-reasons-to-consider-guild-wars-2/#.TpsPHt67jnM

I think these are good reasons, are you guys going to buy the game?

Honestly I only have one problem, it's with the dynamic events. I don't know if they will be all that much fun compared to the traditional MMORPG.

coming up with "reasons" to play GW2 implies that people need "convincing".

  • RevofireRevofire Member UncommonPosts: 269

I know for me that dynamic quests will be much more fun than static quests.

    1. Dynamic Questing system.

    2. Level scaling.

    3. WvWvW PvP.

    4. The 5 playable races.

    5. The available professions.

    6. No 'Holy Trinity'.

There is more but I got things to do.

Well, those seemed underwhelming. Are there any that list 5 GOOD reasons to consider GW2?

These days and in THIS genre, yes. Players do need convincing. It's basically asking "Why should I play this game? Give me a reason. Convince me to be interested because with mmo's I have seen it all before."

I was convinced to play GW2 for a while.. Until the videos really started coming out from expos and real hands on play...

If you're an MMORPG genre player, there is no reason not to try Guild Wars 2. This genre has been stagnant for the past 6 years - mostly due to WoW's dominace and the backing out of many developers/publishers to avoid getting crushed by WoW.

However, WoW's time is coming to a close. MMOs by nature get old and it's time in the sun is nearing an end. We finally have the next wave of major MMOs on the horizon; GW2, TERA, Secret World, Star Wars, Archeage, 40k, etc. These are real MMOs - heavily funded and developed - not the F2P trash that's been littering and dragging this genre down. I'm not saying all of these games will be good, nor revolutionary, but they are adding new elements to the genre and are a fresh take. If you like MMOs (like myself) and have been bored out of your mind with this genre's lack of major releases the past few years, the next year or two look interesting. Lots of major releases - reminds me of the early 2000's.

That being said, hopefully some are worth playing.

He found the Star Wars IP and logo to be lacking.  It's nowhere to be found on any GW2 videos.  *sniff sniff sob snuffle*

Oh nothing lacking, I just dont get excited watching the videos.. I mean I will play it one day, probably not at release but later on..

Its just too "actiony" for my tastes.. On the spot ressurections.. Instant travel around the maps..  I just cant see MYSELF getting hooked or immersed into my character.. The first few videos had me hyped, but after watching probably 75% of the released videos from various sources I quickly lost interest..   I mean of course I havent played but it just seems like God of War or something instead of the MMO gameplay I like.   The combat looks pretty interesting though, its not really all that new but is nice to see that combat style in a MMO game..

I guess in the end its just too , I dont want to say casual.. maybe accessible?  Like, I WANT to be a really good tank people want to group with, and I WANT to search for and befriend the really good healers..  And I WANT to carefully choose my ONE guild for several reasons and the list really just goes on and on.  The idea of just grouping with people to fill spots because there are no real concrete ROLES doesnt appeal.  I already loathe the mostly solo anti social path MMOS seem to be taking and I think GW2 is championing that path like a beast lol..

Anyway, GW2 looks AWESOME, these are reasons that I ALONE lost interest in playing.. Im an older guy and probably set in my ways so if anything its my personal tastes that differ nothing to be said about quality of game.. so please dont flame me for being honest about why im not playing this game,  I mean if you watched a bunch of videos and never once got the hype, and actually lost interest, wouldnt you feel the same about a game?

I understand where you're coming from.  And yes I guess I would feel the same way. From reading your post, one thing that I can think of that might suite you in GW2 would be the 5 man dungeons. Anyway.. Like people have stated many times on this forum. The game won't be for everyone (no game is). There is nothing wrong with your personal taste and many here understand that some players like some mechanics old school. No need to flame.

I hope you weren't offended or mad at my previous comment, it just seems to be a recurring theme on this website of people saying they hate this game without saying why.

Thanks, I am still interested in playing.. I just want to see it in action more I guess.  I do think that if any game could revive my interest in PvP thats been dead for quite a few years now it would be GW2.. Im loving the vids showing the PVP battles.  I would probably play an elementalist first.. I saw a new (to me) video the other day, and it seemed to show most of his spells having a set range, instead of 1 global casting range. Which has always seemed wrong to me, like a fireball and a poison dot having the exact same range always seemed wrong.  Ill try and find the link to the vid RQ and edit here so you know what im talking about exactly..

Yes, sadly Ive lost control and posted in some argument threads before, but I was talking to a RL friend about the madness that goes on not just here but many other forums as well. And he said seomthing along the lines "Have you ever wondered if those people that are arguing ever , without knowing played together?"  Like, this guy your posting back and forth hating on, maybe someday long ago you played in the same instance group and got along great.. But anyway, it made me concrete my belief in the fact that everyone on this site is a gamer of some form or another, maybe their first game was as recent as Rift, or maybe they used to play Pen and paper D&D and played the very first computer rpgs..  But one thing remains is we all love games, and I really MISS actual conversations with fellow gamers.

I mean, I've never punched a friend in the face because he wouldnt buy the same car I did.. Even if I thought his car was a complete POS.

*kneels down with his hand on his heart*  I, (usually known as) Aryth, hereby solemnly swear to not participate in gamer on gamer violence ever again.  LOL

I mean, anyone who looks would know I am really excited about ToR launching.. Do I think its the BEST game ever made? Of course not, its just new, something fresh to me and happens to mostly align with my ideas of the MMO i want to play.  I would be only hurting myself by not trying out GW2, or AA, or TSW, or any of the upcoming titles just because I really like star wars, or I really like Bioware.

Anyways, I get really talkative when I have nothing to play.. Im not even going to talk about the whole Fallen Earth server problems right now, as I might just break something expensive... o.O

For what it's worth, I look at GW2 and see the opposite of what you see.

As far as roles go, they aren't fixed, but people are going to have to adopt particular roles or strategies to beat encounters, especially in the 5-man explorable modes.  We've heard those dungeons described as a three hour wipefest when playing with 3 developers in the group.  I don't know if you read this, http://www.killtenrats.com/2011/06/29/gwfanday-the-dungeon-gel/ as well, describes shifting into different roles depending on what the other players are doing, but having to come up with a solid strategy to do explorable mode.  So I think it's possible that you can at least build toward being a tank or support.  Unlike other games, you won't be able to do it all, but I do think that things like timely use of skills, situational awareness, being able to dodge, etc are going to enable the cream to rise to the top.

As far as anti-social gameplay, I really truly, honestly, see the exact opposite.  Traditional quests are isolating.  You don't want to see other people because you're competing with that, and if you do group up it's only for one elite quest before disbanding.  Dynamic events are all about being able to jump in without worrying about being on the same quest stage.  They chain together to keep people together longer so they hopefully start talking even if ungrouped.  Everybody gets XP and loot for helping kill a mob, so you want to see other people.  The game automentors you down so you can see a guy on your friends list who is 20 levels below you and you can just go group with that guy no problem.  There's 5-6 unique minigames per city because they wanted people to have something to do and be social while they're there.  Even the dungeons, any 5 classes can do them because they want you to be able to play with your friends, not have to exclude someone for not being the right class.  Cross profession combos and anyone rezzing I think not only give you an opportunity to gauge how other people play (like if you want to invite them to a dungeon) but also to encourage cooperation and socialization.  Maybe that thank you is what starts a conversation.  To me it's not about just letting people play solo (though they can), it's about removing all barriers to socializing and getting people playing together for extended periods so they just naturally start talking.

...That vow should be mandatory to post on any game forum ;D

Anyway, yeah, i agree, all the arguments are like arguing whether books are better than movies.

Everyone complains about all the A-Holes *cough* flamers *cough* in WoW, but sometimes i think we forget that they have access to this site just like we do :/ .

I'm actually planning on playing ToR and GW2, i like ToR because i honestly miss WoW, people like to talk badly about it but i still have many fond memories of the hours playing it!

Anyway GW2 originally caught my eye because GW was the first mmo-like game i had played (most of my usernames still use my old Guild tag from that game LOL). I've been throwing money at my screen for over a year now for GW2 and learned a valuable lesson...Never throw coins at a computer screen... xD

Anyway, look for me, if you see someone named Knyt running around, send me a tell ;D

there are roles     just not the traditional roles

theres still a trinity, Damage - Support - Control

    http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/combat/healing-death/

You could say instead of DPS/heal/tank, we have our own trinity of damage, support, and control,

but we prefer to think of them as the variety of elements that create a diverse and dynamic combat system that gives each player a toolbox to work with to solve any encounter we might throw their way. If that sounds like the kind of combat you are interested in, Guild Wars 2 is going to be a great place for you and your friends to fight together for many years to come.
