As usual, many people are wearing their WoW Doomsday sandwhich boards as a result of Blizzards recent expansion announcement.
Let's assume for a minute that they some of the naysayers are right, that WoW is clearly now catering to a younger audience with the Panda's and Pokemon and the dumbed down talent system (This is NOT the place to argue this, so go elsewhere please).
Could this be a good thing for the genre? If they push out the more serious and mature players, where will they go? Will the infusion of new blood into existing MMO's breath new life into them? Does it increase the potential pool of customers for future MMO's?
I am ever convinced and increasingly confident that most of those players will be heading to SWToR. Every single day I see more and more people claiming ToR to be the 2nd coming and alot of them are WoW fanboys. If ToR doesnt have 2-3 million subscribers within the first month I would be shocked.
This post bought to you by the letters "B" and "S".
Completely depends, when they realize it's not the second coming and only an average ho-hum clone, they'll be back because they have to be where it's "perceived" coolest place to be. swtor only has 900k subs man, going back to xx million in wow bro.

The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
I don't see there being an "exodus" per se, but even if many players choose to play SWTOR and completely stop subbing to WOW (that part is kinda important or it's meaningless)- it would still be a bunch of players going from one theme park to anotherwith virtually the same things to do, so imo it would make no difference to anyone but ActiBlizz and EA/Bioware. MMORPG players are still left with the same ol', same ol' with SW graphics, VOs, and shiny new rent-a-friends (companions).
As usual, many people are wearing their WoW Doomsday sandwhich boards as a result of Blizzards recent expansion announcement.
As usual ? Quite opposite, I realy dont remmember previous expansions spliting WoW playerbase in opinions on them like kung-fu pandas (sry couldnt resist )
WoW is just old game now and player exodus is long overdue. It will happen, but imo new games like SWTOR and gw2 will have bigger impact than this april fools joke.
You don't? Then surely you weren't around for burning Crusade and the Nerd Rage over the destruction of the Draenei Race. I read countless post of people saying that they "jumped the shark" and "changed the lore for profit", "this will be the end of wow" "it was a fun ride". Seriously, all the same shit I'm hearing now. I also heard that every game since would dethrone WoW, including:
Guild Wars - 2005
DnD Online - 2006
Vangaurd - 2007
LOTRO - 2007
Age of Conan - 2008
Darkfall - 2009
Aion - 2009
Star Trek Online - 2009
Final Fantasy 14 (almost hurts to say it's name - 2010
And after all of these, some of which large name markets... guess who's still in first? It's not a coincidence. All of the games mentioned above were going to kill WoW and didn't. Most of which are free to play now...lol -
Mark my words.. WoW isn't going anywhere. It will remain Number 1 even with the release of GW2 and TOR - There will be lines at 12am in front of stores for the early folks who don't want to download. Just as usual.
I'll see most of you in MoP - even if you say you won't...lol

Ignorance. There are 10's of millions of MMO gamers out their that have never touched WoW (namely in the F2P market) and maybe just as many that have quit and will never return to WoW. For every generation that leaves WoW a newer generation enters. This can be shown best by the increasing ratity of veteran players that have been in WoW since launch and continue to play the game. I played WoW at launch and quit but like many did the standard turn every expansion up untill now. I have no intention of playing MoP so my sad and short revisit to WoW for Cata will have been my last as I'm sure it will be for many like myself. MoP will not kill WoW I'm almost certain of that. If Cata didn't do it, MoP can do no more harm.

I've never taken the "it has to be because of cata" reason. I'm sure it played a roll which certainly didn't help, i'm more on board with a combo deal "Burned Out" (wow finally reached a burnout stage for many peeps), "F2P" checking if the grass is greener and for free to boot. This is Blizzard i wouldn't be surprised if they announce all million are back and toss another couple million on the record later on. Sure i bounced in and out of wow though out the years but I've only started to steadily play wow this last year or so, it's a good mmo. Back in the day i simply would never give it a real shot or time of day in between EQ, SWG, EQ2, a little addiction with AO, AC in there somewhere along with trying several other mmo's. I understand why it's so popular now that I've played it for more than a month.

Thanks for being brave enough to say you play. It's apparently the cool thing to do now to hate on it...lol. Not just just saying these boards, so don't flame me, but in general. I absolutely love the game, however, I'm a casual gamer, not hardcore, so with WoW, everything is going my way.
What's the current number who left WoW by now? More than 1million subs? 2million? 3Million?
Is it 3 million? Holy cats, they only have 9 million left? Yeah, looks like their ship has sailed. Then they may lose another 3 million when TOR launches. That leaves 6 million players. Then when they see that TOR isnt what everyone claims it is a good half will come back and the rest will be back when MOP launches plus whatever new players they pick up. Sorry if I cant take this "WOW is dead" crap seriously. I guess its because ive been hearing / reading it for what? 5 years now?
Really? This game sucks and Im not having fun? Im going to unsub right now. Thanks for the tip.

Blizzard only has about 5 million subs in NA and the EU.
That aside, as someone who played WoW since late vanilla, I am disapointed and this latest X-pac and with SWTOR coming up I know for a fact Blizzard can't do nothing short of scrapping this panda crap and going for an emerald dream x-pac in order to keep me around.
Even if SWTOR isn't all that how many people are going to go back to an asian based game? I can get that for free.
All the speculation in this thread makes up funny numbers and comments. MMO wise, even if they had 1 million subscribers left, it's still above everything.

Even if it is "asian based game" at least it will be QUALITY not like the F2ps out there. Even then, it will garner a bigger playerbase, since some people do like the asian theme. Personaly myself if its good enough quality game play its worth picking up, I hope Swtor does well.

Suppose the 3 million number is correct, just for the sake of argument. Were all 3 million from US / EU ? What is really telling is that if one game picked up what left from WOW it would at the least double more likely more than double their playerbase whereas a 1 million loss to Blizz is less than 10% of their playerbase. Point is, WOW isnt going anywhere no matter how badly some want it to. What we are seeing here is the same thing we saw with every xpac Blizz releases, players whine and haters cheer for the downfall of WOW which has yet to happen. Then players buy the xpac and continue to play and the haters wait for the next tidbit they can latch onto to predict the end of the evil Blizz empire.

I am not doubting that MOP will be a quality game, I am doubting that it was the right choice when chosing a theme for an x-pac.
Seriously, Kel Jadan's still alive IIRC. Bring back all the previous big bads from BC and WOTLK. Have something go on in Outland again, The Emerald Dream is still unexplorable, have that besomething.
There were a million other, more appealing ideas to the westren market and I feel that Blizzard is selling out to China.

I am not saying that WoW is going to shut down, but that it won't have the millions it had in the west when TOR releases.
In BC and WOTLK we had two iconic villians, one iconic race, one well thought out race in hindsight, and an iconic class added plus two entire continantes.
In Cata we had one Iconic race added, a really bad ass race added, and a cool earth shattering villian.

In MOP we get pandas...
we get "pokemon" too remember, and the monk class. A new talent system, a faction clash and the pandarian continent. Pandas arent a bad idea especially since they are a part of the Wow universe, sure they dont look bad ass, sure its not the run of the mill extreme evil looking villian, but WOW does need to expand its audiance. We all know as gamers, games need to adapt to the playerbase culture and the likes of their bigger audiances. I'm just happy for the moment, WOW hasnt gone the expac route of everquest, 1 every 3-6 months, just so they can get more money out of that franchise.
Wonder how many more NA/EU subs they'll hemorrage after smearing Chinese crap all over the game?
Might as well just implement npcs that spam auction gold sales in game, server side.
No complaints about the Scottish crap Dwarves brought in? Or the Jamaican crap that the Trolls brought with them? As for the gold spam remark you may have a point. I bet not only WOW will be plaged with gold sellers but every MMO on the market. *eye roll*
Really? This game sucks and Im not having fun? Im going to unsub right now. Thanks for the tip.
Let's assume for a minute that they some of the naysayers are right, that WoW is clearly now catering to a younger audience...
Could this be a good thing for the genre?
If they push out the more serious and mature players, where will they go?
Will the infusion of new blood into existing MMO's breath new life into them? Does it increase the potential pool of customers for future MMO's?
There's always room for new players and the younger, the better. If they are young and it's their first game, they could very well have a loyalty factor that could last for years. WoW had a loyalty factor from veteran players who played other games for years before so it shows it can be done.
Where will the "serious" players go? I hope they go to consoles because games aren't serious and I'm tired of a certain crowd who continually press devs and companies to make games for their little fiefdoms. Games are supposed to be fun, not serious business with required mods, required addons, required gear, required mandatory meetings, etc.
On the one hand you said "younger" players, then on the other you said "mature" players so I assume you mean "old". Age doesn't matter as far as games.. old people like good games just like young people do.
You realize there is a major difference between serious "content" and serious like "omg it's Tuesday where IS PopinJAY we need his healz" correct? I am 36 and have no interest in the direction WoW took with goblins and now Pandas...Fool me once shame on you (goblins), fool me twice shame on me (Pandas). This will be the first expansion I have failed to purchase.

The ACTUAL size of MMORPG worlds: a comparison list between MMO's
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums:
Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release].
Can you explain the "Ignorance" part and at whom it was aimed?
No there isn't, back then its was DBZ toons and WoW in space.
Now it's just Pandas and Asian themes.

I don't care about innovation I care about fun.

I don't care about innovation I care about fun.
I am not saying its going anywhere, I am saying that it's going to lose a shit ton of people when TOR releases.
I don't care about innovation I care about fun.
I don't care about innovation I care about fun.
Wonder how many more NA/EU subs they'll hemorrage after smearing Chinese crap all over the game?
Might as well just implement npcs that spam auction gold sales in game, server side.
we get "pokemon" too remember, and the monk class.
Anything that hastens closing this terrible chapter in MMO history can only be a good thing.
Thirty years of gaming experience...not sure if I should be proud of that
