Are there any games with the non-targetting / hack and slash combat system of Dragon Nest / Vindictus where your characters are also free to explore an open world?
I love the combat system of Dragon Nest although the melee actions could do with more combinations as implimented in Vindictus, however being solely resistricted to dungeon play in both of these MMORPG's is torture. Combat is all well and good but it leaves me feeling empty after a while and every dungeon feels like a frenzied rush to finish without making any bonds with fellow party members. Therefore I'm looking for a game with an open world which I can explore and with more crafting elements to it. There also seems to be a lack of non gear crafting in a lot of recent mmorpgs that I've played where as I prefer professions such as alchemy and potion making.
So, does anybody know of an mmorpg that incorporates some of that?

Earthrise has this, but the game is pretty horrible. They have a long way to go before they get the game playable.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
i know of 3, err 4
darkfall, earthrise and mortal online.
i personally think darkfall is the best of the 3 as the other 2 are not that polished and has the most fluid combat system of these 3. all the are full loot games with a decent player economy while earthrise still being the "softest" of the 3 as you can insure your stuff and there won't lose it but a little bit of money.
mortal is too rough at the basics still for me to be enjoyable, earthrise is also very unfinished but i still liked it a lot for a few months. darkfall i did play most of the time but due to the lack of decent patches due to an neverending "rework and relaunch" in the works i just didn't feel like playing anymore.
all three have a trial so you might try it. i also liked dragon nest but as you stated it feels a little limited after a while.
you could also give global agenda a shot now that it is F2P. i find this game to be quite entertaining here and there too.
Hey, thanks for all your suggestions... although I don't think any of those are up to what I'm looking for haha.
I've tried mortal online and the combat was just terrible and the world was just too hard to get immersed in. Granted I only gave it a few hours of my time but I felt at a total loss. I dont think I've really seen first person view done well in a game that isnt an FPS. Darkfall and Fallen Earth combat also look quite clunky and boring, and the world just looks depressing haha. The reason I like Dragon Nest is whilst fighting your moving around your entire field and looking for the best place to strike an attack rather than moving backwards until your skills cool down.
I'm quite a fan of fantasy and normally overlook sci-fi but Earthrise looked interesting although again, the combat looks outdated.. I might just have to give it a go anyway because of the skill builds and crafting interest me.
And I was very excited about TERA when I found out about it but again movement seems quite rigid and the fluidity I enjoy in Dragon Nest doesn't seem apparant... although that could just be down to the people playing the game rather than the game mechanics itself. I guess I'll wait and see if there is a trial for that upon release.
Thanks again
If you want a good fluid combat, you should probably give Global Agenda a try. It was built on a Unreal 3 engine and it plays really good and smooth, like any AAA fps game.
Other than that, wait for Darkfall 2, imo
Tera doesn't seem skill based enough from the leaked footage.

Because of Darkfall I can no longer play MMORPGs for longer than 30minutes because it has spoiled me so much. The combat is far from boring . .. not even a FPS game can provide as much of an adrenaline rush. To be honest I have never played any game that has funner combat. I hated it at first though until I configured my controls better and practiced.

Any i've seen are all either shutdown, not released yet, or FPS/1st person view/a shooter.
There was one couple years ago that played exactly like DDO but was open world and faction vs faction based.
I can't remember it's name though, and it was never listed here to begin with.. was called "Warrior *something* " the second word wasn't really propper english/grammar either lol

Best there is! Watch teh vid to see whats it like. Also remeber this vid is all the way back from 2009.
Yup. Same thing happened to me. Once I set up my UI in a way that worked for me, there was no looking back. I can't seem to stomach tab targetting in MMOs at all anymore. I literally forced myself to play during some of the Rift betas in an attempt to experience what so many had been asking for so long: a well-polished game with all of the common MMORPG mechanics. For me, it was a painful experience at best. Even though I've preordered SWTOR, I'm quite wary that I'm going to be able to look past the combat to enjoy the rest of the game. I will however give it a fair shot.
Darkfall: the hidden gem that will spoil your ass.

@just2duh i think the game your thinking of is return of warrior, its like risk your life 1.5
it has auto attack mode when you play in mouse mode but if you move with wasd you click to attack and can jump around
i have played a little on the european server (ruins of war) it is much better than return and has a publisher that actully does stuff. although the game is very hard to start on as it is open pvp and VERY gear based, if you try it make sure you got some people to play with you
