For such hype, I'm sorely disappointed in Rift. The graphics look fantastic, but toss a cartoon-y mod with block-color graphics over the top, and you might as well be playing WoW.
I couldn't make it past the first couple of quests. "Go here, kill 6 of these" was my first quest, followed by "Go here and find 4 loot drops" followed by "Go here and kill 10 of these". For all the money spent on this game, would it have been so hard to hire someone in the "creative" department other than some interior design cast-off that just wanted to "make the images sparkle!"?? If a game can't suck me in, why should I stick around to see the "awesome end-game play"? Why make me grind level after level of warthogs or elves or whatever the heck that blob of pixels is supposed to represent? Honestly, other than "pre-packaged 'random' events that cycle every so often and involve killing XX of YY" (I saw 2 of these start when I logged in, searched their titles online and found the event "walkthroughs"), what does Rift offer to a gamer that hasn't been done before?
This game is *THE* lowest common denominator for MMO's. It's obviously a winning formula - servers were hopping at 1am on a Thursday evening. If you like WoW, you'll *LOVE* Rift. If you prefer something a little more involved, or if you have kids playing MMO's, chances are this game won't be for you.

You just described EVERY MMO,
Sounds like your burned out on this type of game. MMO's are all the same with minor differences, Yet you have games like Eve, or maybe Super Hero's games like City of Hero's, or alternative combat games like Age of Conan. If you ask me they suck but thats only my opinion.
Other alternatives are FPS where you run around looking at your hands and unlock a shot gun, so you can say the same for FPS.
I like Rift,
Sure it has most every quality of any other mmo. But, Its a Full game and well made. I think it has the best graphics going. I have a super computer with the graphics maxed out and it looks great, and I have a cheap laptop with the minimum settings and plays great but looks bad. At least you can take your pick.
Rift will never be a WoW killer because the quest hubs are linear, quest are all chain quest. So don't expect to play with anyone unless you match quest for quest, or reach end game.
Oh cool I've just stopped my WoW subscription because of Panda Land maybe I'll try this instead . I take it Rift has no Pandas or Pokemon in it ?
I can help you out a bit on the "awesome end-game"
I recently quit rift, I was a member of one of the very best guild in the world (Special Olympic). Atm the hardest content in the game is Hammerknell, which is a nice instance not too easy and not too hard either. We did pre- to the lunch of HK test on the PTR with their developer on our TS, having the actual developer who made the encounter on TS talking to us, asking us to test this and that was really a fun experience.
Then it was lunched and the bugs piled up everywhere. We/I were hoping for a raid instance in Rift (for once) that was not too buggy, since the previous raid instances in the game was so overwhelming full of bugged encounter. There was literally a way to bug all the bosses into a free kill. These bugs were never really fixed and probably are there still today. Their 2nd content patch “River of Souls” that instance was bugged for month so it resets every day, meaning it was a wild farm. Most of their regular instances are bugged, there are so many ways to cheat in them, skipping half the content, pulling trough walls, doing this doing that for free kills. The one fun thing with their regular instances was when you did them on expert they changed a bit, doors were opened to other parts where there were other bosses etc. That was a cool idea the first few times the expert mode felt different, but in the long run it was just a farm. Using any bugs to make it easier and faster.
So HK was launched full of bugs, encounter that was not possible at all to win, encounter where you could bug the boss for freekills. Graphic errors. Class related bugs, making some classe useless to the encounter and so on. My desire to play the game just dropped day by day…
The game is a 99% copy of WoW, they took everything from there, and added a more deep class development and the rest is a fat copy. I must admit the way you can build a class in Rift is fun, bad thing is most of the possibilities are useless since one build is overruling all the rest. Meaning u can make a range rogue, but doing so makes you do damage that is beyond useless (I know this is changed now, now it’s the other way around, most melee rogues trees are useless while range overrule melee).
The good thing is they are really fast, for a new game, to develop and implant new content, but also at the cost of it being halfway done. I felt the game was slowly dying, was hard as f..ck to get member. We moved server so many times, merged with I don’t know how many guilds before we had a good setup. I predict this game will die eventually due to there is nothing new really. Soon Star Wars is out, soon Diablo 3 is out, this games future is really not looking too well.
EDIT:
The auto-group finder in the game is so bugged, it can take hours to get a group going. Find people on your own seem even harder. Tbh for a new player this game is not fun, a lot have quit already, the community is harsh and it feels really thin on a player basis. If you have a guild to play with and its not struggling for active people (most are) then you can get some good experinces in the game. But if i was a new player joining today, leveling up, im sure i would quit fast. When i started i already had a guild, loads of friends ingame (which more or less all quit by now)
I was in the same boat as you. It even got worse after i played the first 10 levels a couple of times, testing to figure out a class-combo that suited me to go along with it further into the game.
I noticed that i had to change my gameplay to not get dull on the quests before reaching lvl 20, so i gave up on marathon-questing and rather took the game as it came along the way. I stopped rushing from hub to hub, but mixed everything up. Uncovering the map, picking up some flowers, kill some mobs, exploring that certain area, fighting an invasion, fiddling with my specs -and while doing all of this i additionally picked up a quest or two along the way if someone with a ! stood there. Never taking a quest with mobs below my level, better 1-2 above me. Shurely not for those who want to reach lvl50 asap, but for me it's the way i have to take on Rift. Creating my own diversion and challenge.
Not shure if it will work all the way through to 50 though. And it shurely won't work for more than 1 char, as there is just too little landmass with content available. So this is not a game in which one day i will have several 50s, concluding in i won't play it for long either.
The days of vanilla wow-questing aka "pick whatever favorite zone and whatever quests from green to red" are over. Even Cata changed to the unlock-the-next-hub principle. It's very possible that i'd have to play WoW the same way i play Rift today to avoid the streamline-burnout. Old school in that sence is only EQ2 afaik.
Oddly enough they do have these squirel pets you can get from the different elements. I petitioned back in Beta to come up with a way to fight them against each other....my petition never went anywhere
@OP ToR ----> That way. Voice overed quest hide the gather y and x stuff and make it a little easier for those burnt out on the non-voiced stuff. Oddly enough for most ofthe quest there was a reason they had you doing stuff if you read the explanations, but it can get repetitive if that is all you do.
Did you not do the Rifts? That sort of seems to go over very well with people burnt out on quest givers when they get slaughtered by a zone event.
