This will be interesting to see as a pretty loose comment, since you don't have a direct quote from the employee. We know how accurate reporters can be, especially given language translations.
I can remember a quote given about the cross server LFG reported as definitely being in there by reporters, then later 'reclarified' as "if needed".
I'm extremely doubtful housing will be added in 2012, but it would be a good thing for the game if it was.

So far the devs have done everything for current customers and little for those that have left. The two biggest complaints from the people that left are that Rift is a small, linear experience and that it lacks a certain flair, or soul.
They could drop a whole new continent on us, like kunark, with 2 (or 4) new warring races and have them better developed than what was at start. Then you can flesh out the original races by how they react to the new races. This is just an example, but there are multiple ways you could dothings to give the world some depth
The other thing I would like to see, and this is less likely to happen so most are eprfectly happy with the system, is some tweaks to the ascended soul system. I would like unique abilities to people that go deep into two different trees. For instance...Ranger/Marksmen would get some type of arrow atack. Ranger/Bard can get a group pet enchance buff.
If they keep the updates status quo I think the game wont have any growth. it will still be around a long time like eq2, but it wont develop into a major factor in the long run. If they flesh the game out in an expansion a lot of people, like me, will likely give it a second look.

This makes the most sense to me with a twist... they need to finish fleshing out the existing content BEFORE the new expansion.
Things like the PA system need major work; you can't even see what the next tiers are yet and what they do because apparently they haven't even been invented yet. They still have more balancing (which I think is more important because you have PvP people still upset over that) and they have to do a better itemization job and more debugging.
Putting in their expansion early would just be more things to have to fix and correct, and they also exclude a chance to make that a paid expansion which I'm sure they'd want to do. If they weren't going to give the base a chance to earn those spider mounts, I highly doubt they'd be willing to give away two new races, two new zones and a complete expansion for free either.
Trion is doing the right thing but not putting new races in right now.. better to hold that stuff until after TOR and maybe GW2 launches as a counter, which means more likely Summer 2012 (for GW2).

These people will never be happy. Even if game is in perfect balance, a skilled player will come along and kick their ass and they will whine about them being overpowered

My favorite part about Guild Wars 2 qq right there. Ever watch someone qq while playing Halo or another console game where you have no gear advantage. GW2 pushing that skill based pvp will be the same and people will still says classes are OP and qq rage quit the game.
I am not pushing RvR in a two faction game like Rift, but a Wintergrasp type thing would work for me even if it was instanced.

Yeah, I did say the stuff I suggested was for an expansion. Ine year is generally the standard amount of time for an expansion, Rift could udnerstandably take a little longer since theyve had to add a lot of endgame content already and several new things on top of that.
But they cant wait more than 18 months either. By then we will already be hearing about SWToR's expansion, and probably Titan information and EQNext information will be starting to leak. In other words, Rift wont be so new anymore and people less likely to go back when there is other new things on the horizon.

They won't wait 18 months (at least from the date it is now), but waiting 18 months from launch isn't out of the realm for an expansion and won't hurt Rift at all. That would place it right about the time I said it would/should happen: Summer 2012 approximately.
That gives Rift a new expansion after TOR has been out for half a year and possibly after just missing GW2 launch. TOR won't be talking expansion six months out I don't think because they have an awful lot of replayable content unlike Rift with it's "one toon" setup.
My guess is: Expansion Summer/late summer with two races/two zones.. housing after that for 2013 as a non-expansion feature (patch).
1. Some type of fire based raid involving Maelforge..1.6!??!1.7!?!?
2. Some type of earth based raid involving Laethsys in a new zone?!?!
3. Some type of air based raid involving Crucia in Iron Pine Peak where she is trapped
4. Then you got Regulos the last boss
After that expansion could be going to the actual planes to take out the real dragons and not their avatars. I can predict what the raiding will atleast look like, but as to how and where I am clueless. They seem to be really like this 6-8 week content release schedule, so do the math and expansion comes around Summer 2012
This is why I don't like Rift, even the names are kinda rushed, e.g.
Noun
Regulo
= Any number of temperatures to which a gas oven may be set.
The lore for rift was written in a couple of bar room sessions, what a shame Trion didn't hire professional (and good for that matter) writing staff to craft a decent lore with good names, as it is there are all these crappy names like Regulos.

They simply do not have a IP like ToR or Warcraft. If you think Thrall sounds any better then you are lying. They are hurting on cinematics to explain the lore a bit better.
It is done better then WoW in my view. While leveling WoW I could gives two cents about the lore and never read the quest. Atleast the story quest are in yellow and kind of bring attention that you might want to read this one.
Cataclysm was kind of a bomb also because the Deathwing storyline is kind of mehhhhh when compared to Arthas. Hell WotLK got me playing mmorpg's and I was a console gamer for life.

18 months form launch would be next september. We dont know what type of cycle ToR will follow, but at that point it will be out for 9 months and yes, expansion talks are quite possible at that point.
Oh yes...FISHING! *daydreams of owning a boat and sailing the seas of Telara, fishing away the hours....and sometimes pulling up treasures from old shipwrecks (paintings anyone?) that....hey that makes great house deco!:) Having a nice days fat catch to take home and COOK would be awesome, too:)

The big problem with the way the quest story is presented in Rift is its painfully boring to read. Most of the quest givers have absolutely no personality at all, and its overly wordy.
As for the rushed name thing, well the company that did the best job at creating tis own lore also had some of the laziest names ever. Two main cities, one the very generic sounding Freeport and the other is Sonyeq spelled backwards. And then their love of anagrams. Goddes of Nature = Tunare, the boss of the plane of EARTH is the RATHE council, boss of the plane of air is Xegony (oxygen) and so on...

Good list. First point is all that matters. Everyone loves their alts, well almost everyone, and this game suffers from a severe lack of alternate leveling paths/zones for alts. It's one of the reasons WoW did so well, you could literally take 2 different races up to level cap and NEVER see the exact same quests unless you wanted to. Sadly, this is also an issue SWTOR is going to face, but that's a subject for a month from now.
More low level zones and mid level zones, yes please. More game systems, too like housing, guild housing, new crafting professions to go with it, in other words, don't be like Blizzard with content patching be like Turbine and SOE. Add new game systems
I was one of those players that left because of Rift's "lack of soul" - which is ironic considering the soul system is one of its highlights. Overall, I enjoyed the aesthetic and atmosphere. I appreciated the polished gameplay mechanics.
However, I'm done with quest/dungeon/daily grinding. 4-5 Years ago, I'd sub without question - but at this point, its just so same-old-same-old. Trion accomplished what they set out to do, and I won't fault them for that.
I'd like to see rift push the rift system even further. Make it feel more dynamic and less formulaic. I lost interest because I knew what to expect with each rift and each event. Apply rift mechanics to other 'dynamic' content (bandits taking parts of a zone under control or a pack of dire wolves wreaking havok on a village for example). Trion could very well accomplish what Arena.net is set to do with GW2 (essentially replacing the quest grind with dynamic events).
I do appreciate seeing Trion to continue to add content (i.e. value to the game). I have often times reconsidered opening my sub just because Trion has continued to produce chunks of content at quite a fast pace.
Based on previews from players and press alike - StOR may have tried and true mechanics, but because of the presentation of the main scenario, players feel like they're playing and enjoying a game vs grinding content just to get to the next carrot. Rift has that potential, the developers just need to push the envelope even further.
I see many people mentioning housing here. Keep in mind that an exciting housing system that keeps you busy for a while needs to be supported by several "sub-systems" so to say. Like you need furniture, maybe a garden (growing plants and flowers), perhaps some domestic animals around, agriculture would rock.
So I think the needed content to present housing in a an exiting and new way that you haven't experienced in plenty of other games before is more than what fits into a regular patch.
But way more than housing, Russ' mentioned "complete new world" sounds great. It's what the game needs way before (instanced?) housing that adds little to nothing to Telara.

I get this strange feeling with ToR people are going to blow through the content and when they ask for more to do at end game they are going to get told to reroll and wait for new stuff. I saw it in WoW all the time and Bioware seems way to confident.

Originally posted by popinjay Housing will probably make it but seriously, do not expect it to be in this game before almost two years at least. There are too many problematic issues they would have and they don't even know if/how it will fit in with their free transfers. It's just that it's a low priority (housing/fishing) in Rift right now because those things would not affect the economy in any positive way or advance the game in Trion's eyes. They probably think adding more dungeons/raids, and continue to fix the PA system as more important.
Yep, that's my take too.
People think you just plop housing in the game and there you go, but it has to have a function or purpose for the economy or some type of subsystem to use with it like furniture and such.
A game like TOR can get away with "shipboard housing" because as a 'moving' thing, it makes sense that it's not directed tied to some things. Since they (Bioware) has it set up where you can have your companions to do crafting in your "house" (ship), it's already something that makes sense as far as lore and fitting the story. With the other stuff they have on their plate (expansion), no way this makes it in for 2012. If it did, it would be pretty lackluster kind of like the rushed cross-server LFG system.
It's tough to just plop down houses in the middle of Rift lore where it makes any kind of sense without some backstory or other types of things. This is why I have don't think it's going to be soon for this feature and the same reason AION couldn't do it either right away. People just going to have to be patient period.

Doubtful. The replayability gives it more diversity than Rift.. no one denies that. So someone could hit endgame, do the raiding content there (they'll probably have two raids by the time average guilds hit endgame) and if need be, they'd probably want to dabble in the other classes.
Since the classes are less diverse overall than Rift, someone HAS to reroll to get a different experience and they've got different content for that. Then they can flip factions and do the same thing.
If you look at what most people are saying, they can't even decide which two Republic toons to roll first (like Smuggler or Trooper) because they see more than one class they want to do, let alone even what two they want to do on the Sith side.
This is what plagued Rift.. if you seen one, you seen em' all. People were told that in Rift, I think they'll voluntarily do it in TOR without someone saying that.
Rift took the approach that 'we dont need as much content because people wont have to roll alts with our system' without realizing that people WANT to roll alts.
A lot of this is because at max level, your character progression stops. Yes, they later added PA, but that system is just two minor for it to work as it does for EQ1. Maybe the second tier will fix that.
