What new innovations will be in store for future mmos

What new and exciting innovations will be in store for mmos down the road?

Will there be changes in graphics engines that allow better gameplay?

Will fiber optics internet connections that replace cat5 cable bring mmo's the type of speed increase we need to sustain heavy population servers?

What do you think the future of mmos holds?

    What?

But on topic, I think they will be done with WoW-type quests and slowly move over to GW2's way of doing them. That, and a more action-based combat system will be more common I think.

One innovation that will come out by the AAA companies is to be able to recruit companions so you can solo raids and what not. Like 9 companions+you for a 10 man raid...and so forth.

Makes sense to me considering DX11 has better AI and pathing built into it to take in account wind and slope grade.

It depends how far down the road you are looking.

From what I've seen in development at the moment, nobody is straying far from the trodden path.

I think we're a good 2 years or more from anything innovative happening with MMORPG's.

I think the mmo of the future will be exactly like the WoW clone of yesterday.

unless you mean indie mmo's, in which case they will all be the best thing the world has ever seen, and create technology that will cure cancer grant wishes and shit

I think there's room for both that and old quests. I'm a little concerned with the lack real quests in Guild Wars. I'd guess we see a lot of generated content with much better generation systems than we see in current games, that allow for mutation and custom tailoring thngs for each player. I don't think old style quests should go away, but the kill 10 _ quests aren't serving much purpose other than as a means of experience. I'd like to see more EQ 1 style epic quests with generated systems that require players to think, and are spoiler proof.

yea good ideas, that reminds me on a few things.  After watcing the Skyrim sneak peak gameplay and the way the dragons attack and the way the npcs go about there business and how you can effect them really reminds me of some key elements future mmos could bring to the table.  Having advanced NPC character actions and how they are changed by you would be the obvious thing to enhance.  Also making new envirement and weather in game would be cool as well like that new mmo that was suppose to be in development "darkness and light".

On top of outfits, SOE are adding a faction-based metagame to keep the endless battle interesting. Factions now earn resources from capturing bases. Hold one of these for a long time and you’ll start to see the benefit in your armoury, as Matt explains. “The Vanu Sovereignty might need Araxia – a rare resource – in order to put railguns on their Magrider tanks. You really don’t want to deal with Magriders when they’ve got railguns, so you and your leadership might think that the best tactic is to go and take over all the places on the map that have Araxia and take the bases back.”

“Our mission system does two things really well. There’s a lot of people who want to play an FPS. They just click their high-imperative attack mission or important defend mission and pop, off they go. But these objectives are created by players. If you’re a commander, squad leader or even a guild leader, you can just place objectives in that mission system and people who aren’t interested in any of that leadership stuff will complete them.”

I dont think to many people are planing or have done stuff like that.

I hate to say this but i think Dark Souls will be the future of MMOs. where you can play through an RPG and then invite people/friends to join your game, with the mobs scaling depending on how many people you have.

I mean look how solo oriented games are now this is the next logical evolution.

if you don't know how Dark Souls work basically while your playing the game if another player on their game is close to your progression you can invite them to your game (or vice versa) and have them play with you.

Ten years ago I use to daydream about how expansive and detailed MMOs would be in a decade. granted, I was going off of how expansive the game Ultima Online was.

Needless to say, I was hugely let down.

If MMOs keep going i nthe same direction with regards to innovation as they have been... MMOs will be entirely soloable, there will be no archetypes/roles at all (aka zergfest), crafting won't exist, PvP will be confined to boxed instance matches, and everyone will be in there own little phased pocket universe of the game world.

I hope some company will step up and promote healthy gaming for mmorpgs and also promote better gaming experiences by having classic servers which allows players the way to play the game as it was intended to be played even after numerous expansions.

First in regards to healthy gaming I expect the following to be done to encourage it or enforce it :

    1.  limit dailies to 2 days per week

    2.  dungeons and raids are on longer lockouts for everyone (48 hrs for dungeons and 2 to 2.5 weeks for everyone !)

    3.  possibly even look at having 1 day per week where you CAN'T raid or run dungeons at all promoting world play instead of dungeon crawling

    4.  mod chats better

Now in regards to classic servers :

    1.  Allow players to save their toon at different lvl caps so that when they play a lv 70 raid lets say well they will be using a toon meant for that raid

    2.  Do not nerf the content

If some company can deliver this in the coming years all my money is going to them.

    Get to it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Money is the root of all evil.

Ahhh Darkness and Light getting a re-ignition. Hopefully it will be better this time!

Its a totally different game,it does not even use the same engine. Good thing is they have kept many of the cool features that were meant to work in D&L.

Names and places have all changed and the lore is totally new.

Their might be some hope as yet.

In the short term, the only innovation I see in the MMO genre is the link between Dust and EVE.

In the long term, I expect that developers leave their heavily scripted world designs.

Just like in Real Life, innovation comes from the "little" guys, and NOT from the money grubbing suits that exploit a specific resource until it's Dead such as SOE, Blizzard, Cryptic, EA, Bioware, etc etc.

The NEXT innovation for MMO's in general is FREEDOM. True, unadulterated, freedom. There is tech coming out in the next 5years that MANY developers are working on in order to give you insane freedom in a digital environment. Image flying around in your spaceship, docking at nearby spacestations, walking around said spacestation with your avatar, and then going off back into your ship & clicking a star in the VAST universe & warping to it. THEN, you fly FROM orbit down to the ground of a planet with ZERO load times. Totally impossible right :)? Link

That game I just linked has been in development for going on 8years now. It's not because they keep pushing it back to "fix" stuff. It's because that engine has taken them THAT long to code. They also have run into financial issues over the years where their investers simply got tired and walked away (those very SAME investors became investors for Bioware, and subsequently around that time Bioware began work on SWTOR...go figure right?). There are MANY other projects simily to Infinity:QFE, but they aren't as polished looking as Infinty is :3!

REMEMBER: If ONE company is showcasing such tech, there are a couple dozen more behind the curtains working diligently to get their golden goose out of the pen :D!

In the future we will have huge open worlds to explore, quest will be out there for us to find and do on our own without having to talk to a NPC with a flashy thing above his head.

sombody will make a game engine that lets us dodge magic spells and arrows, there wont be classes and people will actually live in the towns instead of using them as quest hubs that they only visit for a few levels then move on.

There wont be instances people will actually interact with others while doing quest or exploreing.  just think in the future when your on a quest you might run into another player and help him out with a few heals or somthing and maybe even add him to your group to OMG HELP HIM!!

oh wait..... all these options are from 1999 before the great Nerf bat beat the crap out of the MMO universe and gave us WoW and all its clones.

The real future is facebook MMO games with cash shops.

    sad isnt it ?

Most of the MMOs have mobs that scale with group size?  Do they really?  I've never noticed that.

I actually saw two examples of browser based mmos that allowed someone playing online to summon a friend's character that was offline for a bit of group play. The friend's character would get expereince normally and once they logged in could distribute that experience how they seen fit. I cannot remember the games but I think it was a skill based system.

Diablo 2, DC Online, and Champions Online were the only games that ever did group scaling based on the number you brought with you.

Granted, DC Online & Champions Online were only affected in instances for missions & what-not. However, you get my point!

I was referring mostly to the "playing an RPG and then grouping with friends". About "mobs scaling" D&D allows you to pick the difficulty depending on your group, in WOW you can chose between 10, 25 or 25h (they push the scale part further, they take into account not only the size but the equipment too), COH has something similar...  so I'd say so.
