It is funny because OBVIOUSLY many are bored to death of it now....right?
So...there should be a game that actually IS different and not only saying it is.
Sure...there are still thoose that enjoy the cookie-cutter experience...respect to them....but is it not time for something truly different now?
Yes but how do you sell that notion to investors/stock holders or your board.I think this is the major problem with games right now ,is they are ALL designed to make as much profit as possible.Right now most developers feel the simple solo play easy handouts, linear full of markers game is the design that makes the best profit. The ONLY new trend that is also imo a very lame attempt at doing anything for the genre is this stigma attached to "end game" Raids.
I enjoyed FFXI for about 7 of 8 years and not once did i ever care about a RAID or End game, that is called good game design, other games shoudl learn from it.The problem is the majority of players in this genre are not true MMORPG players they are soloers just hanging out AND demanding a solo game.IMO FFXI was the game that closest to being different and better but it fell short of thinking and resorted to Wow type game play now.
If a game is not designed to have player interaction all the time, then it is not a mmorpg. So many seem to think that adding the internet makes it a mmo. This is exactly the same as trying to say that the fans in the football stands are also players, after all they are their right?Players in mmo's right now are just "in the stands" they are not interacting.therefore they are not mmo PLAYERS,just fans.
FFXI was one of the VERY few that was predominantly a grouping game and it did work, jus tthose that don't belong in a MMO world did the complaining.
Seriously is there any other way to do solo play than linear questing? This is why the genre is so stagnant because they want the same design but there is no answer to making it better unless you totally get out of that mindset.
So when you tihnk about it,is any developer going to remove potentially millions of dollars to make a good mmorpg and alienate solo players?I don't think so,this is why we will wait years in between for a niche game/developer to create an actual MMO.
Yes i will agree EVE does the MMO thing right, but the overall game just lacks so badly, that it caters to one dimensional thinking which is pvp zergs.Eve had great potential if in the hands of a good developer, but it would also take well over 100 million to make it 3/4 decent, something CCP never had and recently have shown they are also not about to spend it either.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
