Rift: Ember Isle Preview

From Massively interview with Rift team about housing:

I then asked about the rumor of player housing possibly coming to RIFT, and Hanlin said he didn't have anything on the immediate horizon right now, and that the team is focused on core, combat-themed gameplay.

Guessing: 2013 possibly, but definitely not 2012. They aren't even thinking about that right now, they have bigger fish to fry.

    and egads...

As a more unstable space, rifts and invasions are more frequent and world events are larger. “A dragon might fly over the entire zone,” said Hal, “and Ember Isle really does need a dense player population to trigger the world events.”

That's been the problem with rifts in this game already.. the population hasn't been 'dense' enough. The only time they get thick is around those craft rifts where the loot falls out. I'm not sure why they think another population-dependant mechanic will work in the future when it's been failing for the last few months on many servers but the crowded.. /shrug

I guarantee your friends listed a reason for quiting that is identical to the the mmorpg.com review of the game they did like 4 times before Rift released.

When every single review under the sun under the sun says the same thing and you still buy the product you need to get your head examined. How do people qq at Trion saying the leveling sucks? I think it is fine and can give a damn about having alts and only care about end game. ToR seems to be the exact opposite. They put all their money into what results in 1% of your total /played time, so GG No RE RE

I get it that you dont care about a shallow and soulless world.  but its very obvious that many do, and its causing the game you love to keep dropping in playerbase.

Shrug. World too small, too little really entertaining stuff to do, leveling alts was horror, questing was lame, rifts got tedious, no other activities, various reasons why people left but in the end, they left, sometimes within a few months.

Let's face it, Rift is a nice, polished themepark MMO but compared to other themepark MMO's it was definitely one of the smaller ones in various ways. Nice, polished, but small.

Heck, even the 2 'capital cities' are a joke compared to any random MMO city. I think that even EQ from 10 years ago had larger cities than what was being called like that in Rift.

EQ1 had about a dozen bigger cities than Rift's capitals at launch

     lies.

replace 'abuser' with 'captor', and you might have an argument... but oh, 'captor' doesn't really apply to your argument, does it?

     i agree 100%.

i would still play Rift if there was more to do, and if the world did not feel like a shoebox. i had fun in the game, but by lvl 45 i knew i saw what it had to offer (zone-wise), and that is too soon for a month of play.

Rift could get me back if it had-

    -housing

    - more races (interesting ones)

    - alternate lvling paths (more zones)

    - a third faction of planar races, who invade the other two factions regularly

i found the game smooth and initially, very fun. but like many seem to agree (from seeing it in-game, and on this site) the fun wears do too quick.

i started to feel directionless, and for an rp'er in an MMO, this is a buzz kill. STILL!... i hope the game improves and one day gives me a reaon to try it again. i really like the bard, and had a blast with my nightblade/riftstalker/assassin build. but with an uninspireing world, i had little reason to stay.

I mentioned this earlier, and many players have asked for it but Massively seemed the only press asked to Trion Headquarters who dared asked the question a lot of people were wondering that no other interviews seemed to want to offend Trion about:

Given that little response, it's clear housing isn't even on the radar blip. If you can't say "We'll see about putting housing in hopefully at the end of 2012", or "We'll investigate putting housing in hopefully in 2013", it's clear they have no intentions of doing it for a long, long, LONG time.

Aion was the same way; they wouldn't even talk about housing when asked due to all the real content that was missing and they are just now (last month) announcing that housing is "coming".. and that was two years or so. I expect Rift to be as slow as NCSoft was on this issue.

The difference I see with TOR is all the positive feedback from reviewers, con goers, and more importantly beta leakers.  As a long time mmo player, beta tester, and follower it has been a long time since an MMO has garnered as much positive feedback from all groups.  WAR had terrible feedback from beta leakers and mixed reviews from those who played at cons/events.  AOC had terrible feedback from beta testers.  AION had bad feedback from testers.  FF14 had bad feedback from testers. Your examples are not comparative.  If the popsicle had star wars and was made by Ben and Jerry's then yea it would be an awesome popsicle most likely.

    Cheers!

This is the reason why you have to develop a game with the right source code that you are familiar it.  Thats why afterward it take lesser effort to create great content in lesser time!!!

    Trion very good !!

MMMORPGs NEED player housing or some sort of area customization options these days.  It goes a long way to making players feel as if they are a part of the game world, and there's just no real reason not to have it.

On topic though, these screenshots look really nice, and I can't wait to try out the new 5-mans, but nothing changes the fact that Rift doesn't seem enjoyable if you're not a theorycrafter or AA grinder.  Plus, the fact that it is built on such a shoddy game engine makes it feel incredibly rough around the edges when compared to games like LotRO and WoW.

  • xKingdomxxKingdomx Member UncommonPosts: 1,541

How about just get rid of all those silly quest hubs and make the majority of the game about rift invasions and PvP rifts, just leave some of those hunting dailies so crafters or butchers can have some experience to hunt for materials.

then we might have something good to go. Zone events are actually very fun to complete because the whole zone is working together. But some zone design just doesn't make sense, Guardians and Defiants  NPC will kill you if you are on the opposing faction, yet, they build they hubs next to each other, they are practically in the same town in Iron Pine.

Everyday Rift rountine is log in, check out which zones have zone events, if none, do dailys , log off. Quest are too tedious to even accept. I don't even get how am I suppose to level an alt, when questing is already tedious in the first go.

How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW?
As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.

  • GravargGravarg Member UncommonPosts: 3,424

I didn't think it was possible, but Rift battles just got more massive.  I thought zone invasions were big enough battles, sounds like the invasions on the isle will be insane...better repair my armor up and get those dents out of my shield :):):)

  • rojoArcueidrojoArcueid Member EpicPosts: 10,722

nice update, i hope the Kelari island brings a major city within the new land....

also, just want to point out something:

" Trion has always emphasized that they will listen to and gauge their players reactions to the new content they offer and bring them more of the same if it is received well "

this is a good thing after a couple of tries. However, the little part in red tends to become a big problem after they do that a couple of times... it turns from exciting and cool and new, to boring, old, and repetitive.....

there could be tons of great mmos out there but devs screw it after ppl love 1 content pack, and the devs keep spamming their [add more of the same] button with every major content update

anyway, looking forward to this big update :)

My problem with Rift is that it feels slow. I can't really explain if it's the real speed or the animations' fault, but for some reason combat in Rift seems so artificial boring.

Even WoW, which I don't think has the greatest combat pace ever feels nice and quick, when you cast, stab, slash, etc you somehow get the feeling that something is happening.

In Rift I feel like an inanimate object, even though I punch and stab around. The rogue class I found to be a little better, but still kinda jerky.

Also making an alt is probably boring as hell, as there's only one leveling path anyway. PvP isn't bad, but the combat kinda ruins it for me.

Wish there was a GW2 beta so I could try the combat out, until then it's gonna be WoW or nothing for me I guess.

I think what you describe goes on the account of the global cd which is all but too present in Rift's combat system. Playing a triggerhappy class and being kneedeep in mobs it makes you literally WAIT until you can fire off the next thing. On my warlock i had to arrange the keys according to the GCD, plus applying dots takes longer than they tick in the end.

By what i've seen there are no talents to reduce the GCD or take it off certain spells and just a few come without it. I guess it's some technical attribute of the gamebryo engine and/or netcode, as WAR had some problems with it as well.

It also seems like the server registers certain things not when they hit the target, but when i press the key. This irritates the hell out of me playing my marksman. Again, there was something in WAR about this as well.

Some animations being a bit awkward don't help it either.

Coming to think about it, that thing of registring procs and whatnot on keypress instead of on hit probably makes a noticeable difference, and one that should be pretty easy to fix.

I don't really think it's the GCD, WoW also has it and while leveling it stays on 1.5s for most classes as well. And rift has some off CD procs also, but they don't really feel like they're hitting. I recall playing a warrior and expecting big hack'n slash, but it felt a but jerky.

I sort of want to play Rift, as the world around is amazing and for me there's still lots of cool stuff to do, plus I like to explore, but geez having a lvl 20 char and feeling something's not right kinda throws me off.

Maybe I'll try a rogue later on, I recall having one rogue tank in beta and it was nice in dungeons with all the different skills.

While i agree that the world does need more pure size, Trion should think about how to add more depth before they just design more mass.

The way the world is now it could be double the size - but wouldn't make double the fun in adventuring and exploration, as long as Trion keeps on filling it with uninspired "quest+forget" stuff. Problem is that Trion simply does not intend for you to make the journey worthwhile, but the destination only.

The game contains many awesome locations which should have been elaborated way more. In example Smith’s Haven has an awesome overall setting to it, in a decent mmorpg it should be four times it's size and could carry it's very own lore, keeping you busy for a week with 20 quests incl. group content and stuff to discover. But then, Trion can't establish locations like these with the current insane level speed. You would outlevel them or gain 5-7 level in the same spot, spending your whole journey to 50 in just a handful of these. There are certain places with tons of potential, but Trion wants to rush you through them, for a level or two in less than an evening, instead of properly working them out and put some effort to it.

And so no place ever grows on you like the Cauldron/Blackrock, Tyr's Hand, Hearthglen, Andoral, Jintha Alor etc. in vanilla WoW did.

I had loads of fun in Rift until my laptop broke... I may play again when I have a new pc.

I think some of the people here are a bit peeved they don't like the game more... and it really isn't for everyone... but if you do like it then the pace of development is amazing.

Invasions are massive pvpfests on briarcliff and have been on other  shards as well, it would be nice if they upped the rates they occur a bit or give players a way to spawn them. Ember isle is gigantic, they have an even bigger zone coming as well on ptr. Plane touched wilds, Rift has my money for awhile, the only things I want are RVR and a better pvp ranking system.

Your going to have to hold your breath a bit then.

This ZAM interview kind of hints at that not being there on 1.6 release, but maybe later as it seems their pretty much concerned with the PvE for awhile: ZAM had a chance to talk with Design Producer Hal Hanlin in San Francisco about Rift's upcoming patch 1.6 and Ember Isle!

Some interesting things in there where they say a lot of the content isn't even ready when 1.6 drops like the Instant Adventures.

A lot of the discussion also centered on the new Instant Adventure mechanic. This mechanic will NOT be available immediately upon release of 1.6, but will be added before 1.7, and it sounds extremely promising.

Lover Rift and will return guess after sub to Wow ends. Actually this two for now are all I need for my gaming needs while waiting for next expansion(s). But as altholic is true, I find much more work for me in wow as you must choose at start one of 10 classes, while here are actually 4, despite every1 of them compensate  more then this as have different builts within. The main reason I still prefer wow is also that I simply love fantasy games and wow is pure fantasy, Rift is much more about realism. As for quality ... never seen better launch as of Rift.
