I think GW2 will be a totally groundbreaking new MMO!

sfly2000sfly2000 Member Posts: 168

Edit:

...and it will have almost nothing from most of the others MMO's and will be oh such a different new experience!

Edit end

Old post:

Ok, maybe I don't have the same gaming background as everyone else here so I really don't see the difference in this game compared to the plethora of cookie-cutter MMO's out there...

Feel free to start bashing me now but keep it somewhat civil please...

Am I totally wrong when I am thinking that many of you are either current or former WoW players? LOTRO maybe? Rift? GW1?

Sure I do think this game will have some new features....but I'm sorry....all theese games look the same to me....

Guess I'm looking for a more oldschool MP adventure game or something....

Ignore the poll. I tried to remove it...

Either you are a troll or you need to do a lot more research before posting.  I can tell you first after playing both GW2 and WoW that that are two very different animals.  But even spending less then 5 minutes on their websites or even this website you would know that.

Thanks for calling me a troll by the way. I saw that one coming...only didn't expect it so fast.

For your information I'm not a troll....I'm an Ogre!

If you don't see the difference, it's because you choose not to see it.  No amount of reasonable discourse can cure you of willful blindness.

By the way, I'm currently playing Civ5.  I don't think you mentioned that one...

OP is right, but doesn't go far enough. GW2 is also a Minesweeper clone due to the use of the mouse.

Dude, people have explained the same thing you are asking them to explain again to several people ( and when I say several I mean probably a 100 by now).

Just go read the stickies and you'll understand. The stickies have videos too so.

    This is not a game.

You have to realise that while MMOs have certain mechanics dominant over others, in general they offer more freedom of movement than single player games. That howerer does not mean that the players actually take advantage of that freedom. It's sort of a self fulfilled prophesy, if you set your mind that the game is X and plays like X, you'll play it that way and choose to ignore the other possible avenues.

To give you an example, the original GW had a very active PvP community and was considered one of the best PvP games out there. For those people participating in PvP, GW was all about PvP. For me that didn't care about it, PvP was a secondary feature. This holds true for pretty much every MMO, with very few exceptions where the developers choose to strong arm and handhold their players.

Finally, consider this. If you go out on the market today to buy a car, would you complain that the dealership offer cookie cutter cars, or you'll enjoy what the advances in modern technology offer to you today? The same holds true with MMOs, fundamentally they haven't moved far from their MUD roots, yet we moved away from the bareskin days into the full extras era.

Im sorry but i think that your point of view is terribly wrong, i assume you already seen a lot of videos and info about gw2, if not... Do it, if you already did and you still cant see the difference then there is nothing to do, and i think there are Quite differences and i repeat QUITE.

I hope you can see it more clearly within time, because this is not about Likes, is about How things are. Peace.

    Not the best comparison.

I'm not just talking about "technology".

MUD for always will be a strange occurance and I don't think we can or should compare to that.

You and I both have two eyes. We both have two arms and two legs. We both have hair.

So you are a clone of me, right?

Wrong. We're part of the same species, so we share general traits in common. But in order for us to be clones of each other, we would have to share all the specific elements that make one human different from another human within our species.

Likewise, all games within the MMORPG genre are going to share some general traits...because they are in the same genre. A game is not a "clone" unless it shares a large number of specific elements that typically differentiate these games.

Does that make sense? The fact that both WoW and GW2 have character creation, and both have loot, and both have spells and skills... that makes them games in the same genre, not clones of each other. The specifics between the two games are quite different...and that is what people are asking you to go learn about.

You are totally entitled to saying I am wrong. If you had some proof to prove me wrong I'd gladly accept it....

...and yes...naturally I watched some videos and read some stuff...interviews and whatnot....

I have to add that I am NOT totally disinterested in this game yet. It can still surprise me...just to be clear...

    planetside player here:

I could name 3 differences just by watching GW2 vs. WOW videos

    1. fighting mechanics - movement in addition of vastly higher amount of animations involving battles both player and monsters , WOW is yet to have a dodge/roll function. and a point of time WOW had a auto attack.

    2. World -  WOW2 maybe bigger, but not prettier, GW2 graphics is self explaintory as well as not following the K.I.S.S. method  of catering to the lowest common denominator as far as cheap computers go.

    3. Story -  No sign of a 2 faction sided game in sight, ala alliance v. horde. WOW does have a story, but blizzard is suspect   when it comes to promoting said story.(avg. wow player: i play the game and rack up quests to rush to 80+, wait..theres a story?)

      4.  Subscription model- WOW has a 1-20 f2p along with a sub and who knows what...  GW2 has no  subscription, from beginning to end.

I dont play wow, so feel free to correct anything you see inaccurate, but if GW2 is to be a wow cookie cutter than, hell...

then DarkFall is a bigger WOW cookie cutter clone than them all.

If your truly interested in knowing about the game then take a gander at the thread in this forum "Everything We Know about GW2"

My only advice is to just watch and read it all with an open mind and not try and make any comparisons to other MMOs till after youve finished.

Also your original post gives me the feeling that you dont play very many mmos at all, so it would probubly be best if you didnt try and make comparisons at all if you dont have experience with them.

Lets agree upon that everything is relative as someone else said.

Also as I pointed out from the start many things are in the eye of the beholder.

What I meant is that most of theese games LOOK in a similar way...

Define "look the same", please. Are you literally talking only about looks, as in design, theme or appearance?

With "some new features", you're casually glancing over some significantly different game mechanics. But since you claim to have read them already, I see little reason to just repeat them to you again.

Can you give us an example of an oldschool MP adventure game. or something ...?

I don't understand why people are so hostile about this.  This is one MMO that doesn't even have to get defensive about it or anything.. Now, TOR, OTOH :P

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

    1) For me the fighting looks all too alike. Just look at the GUI with thoose rechargo-meters, the radar and so on. We have basically the same tasks like tank, DPS, healer right? I mean at least that is the naming they are using themselves.

So, they added an action element like dodge/roll...wow...big surprise...I guess nooooo MMORPG has ever done that? *cough* DDO *cough*

You even mentioned WoW has gone that way by adding more action elements into combat...just getting further away from the RPG part the way I see it.

    2) So....one of them looks a little better, technically. Well...they outgunned a 7 years old game....congrats to them...

    3) Lets see if story become so much more important in GW2.....I'm sceptical....

    4) How or how much you pay for a game fundamentally should not effect gameplay even though microtransactions could...

We're not talking about subjective matters. If you want to call two things "clones" of each other, you HAVE to talk specifics... objective elements of each game which are the same. You are the one talking generalities... two games "looking" similar to you is completely subjective. People are telling you that objectively speaking, the two games are very different.

If you do have specific facts that you feel back up your claim, please list them so we can discuss those. In a previous thread, you listed "both games have mounts" as one of the specific elements you felt that WoW and GW2 had in common. This is a simple matter of you being uninformed, because GW2 will not have mounts at launch...and even if they did, just having mounts is a general trait that pretty much all MMORPGs have in common, and doesn't make two games clones of each other.

And by the way...if you think the two games look the same graphically (tech or style), I would like some of what you're smoking.
