My only major complaint, as both an ex EQ2 live player and EQ2X dabbler, is that the only way to play the Beastlord class is to buy AoD. I guess that is the major gimmick of AoD, but still, I would like to just purchase the class separatley rather than buy the entire expanison.
So I logged in to take the old Necromancer for a spin and all my characters are locked and I have to buy race / class addons, 6 each at about 8 bucks a pop + character slots.
Or just one race and one class pack just to play the Arasai Necro. That's just to get into the game to test it out. By the way I paid for each expansion, all the adventure packs and about 4 years worth of subscriptions. Guess that's not enough to log back in.
as long as the servers are down you will experience seeing characters 'locked'. this has been a consistent issue with large updates in the past.
as soon as the updating is done and the servers are live you should not have a problem accessing your characters.
however, if you are doing so as f2p "Free Player" then you will have the opportunity to choose which four you want unlocked
to reiterate:
everyone is experiencing 'locked characters' right now, because the servers are still down. as soon as they are up that will change in accordance with the subscription model you have.

AOD is not adding any adventure content, but if you want to play a beastlord, will need to buy it
but if you want to play a beastlord
play a beastlord
beastlord
FUARRRKKKKKK. I might just re-install to play BL.
ya reinstall and pay ~40USD, *then* you can play a beastlord

Well I wanted to log in until I read this. What about if your character already has expert/master level skills?
Skills stay as they are, but they screw you on gear regardless.
Doesn't matter if you're full mastered and running around in Treasured gear.
Personally, I'd buy AOD, DoV, and subscribe - if they merge all the servers into one, bump the population up, remove the dungeon finder timer lockout (which essentially breaks DF) and let everyone wear MC/Fabled gear so I no longer get 12khp "tanks" at 80 as a 18khp necromancer in full fabled gear and all masters.

as mentioned before, returning players w no sub, will be treated as silver members (4 character slots)

"If I can roll a dwarf paladin without any up-front fees, then count me in. If not, then middle finger to you, SOE." - RexNebular
There's a crazy level of entitlement across the MMO gaming community the past year or two. I need to try it out and see if it works anywhere else in the rest of the world. Like Toys R Us:
"You make Modern Warfare 3 free right now or I'm not taking a single Modern Warfare 3 game home with me!" *folds arms and gives stern look*
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein "Graphics are often supplied by Engines that (some) MMORPG's are built in" - Spuffyre
So to even start playing the Cat Dirge, Frog Bruiser, Fae Illusionist and Lizard Shadowknight on my old account again I'd have to pay about as much up front as for a newly released AAA title ? And that would still leave me with severe restrictions on not only content but basic game functions, some of which can be lifted by paying more, some of which can't - with no way to earn the Station Credit currency in game ?

They're trying to shove a gimp-ware trial restricion model into a MMO, of course it's going to get negative responses. It's the equivalent of that shiny text editor that's "Free" to "try" but they ask $49 to allow file saving and word wrap.

LOL, yeah, every now and then local restaurants have promotions and give away free things such as an entree but I'm going to hold out for a free steak dinner next time. Nay, I will demand it!

all you need to do is SUBSCRIBE .. no restrictions
if intend to play 1 character of any type --- 15.00 (7.50 for race unlock/7.50 for class unlock)
EQ2 does offer free races/classes, but charges extra if you rather to play other classes

Still not up:(
your existing skills are unaffected by member level - you keep your skills/spells
you wont be able to scribe NEW masters tho, without having a sub or buying an unlocker
regarding DOV,
the price has been reduced to 15.00 on the ingame SC store
as I mentioned before, DOV is endgame content - and useless to anyone under level 85
all the DOV quests give you legendary gear for rewards so probably want a sub if you plan to do endgame

as mentioned before, returning players w no sub, will be treated as silver members (4 character slots)
http://eq2.zam.com/wiki/Membership_Matrix_%28EQ2%29
there are several ways to reduce the SC pricing
- buy a WALMART game card, costs 15.00 and the WALMART card gives 20.00 SC credit
- wait for a x2 SC promotion, this happens several times a year and effectively makes everything half price
- finally, if you do sub, you will get 5.00 SC credit each month

regarding the cash limit for Silver members
players get around this by buying pristine repair materials
http://eq2.wikia.com/wiki/Pristine_repair_material
(it sells back to vendor for same price)
unfortunately, it was made heirloom with the AOD patch,
players will not be able to do commerce with other players using repair materials

is it just me or does the 18 platinum limit just force to to subscribe?
its not just you - the 18 plat limit sucks and hope they reconsider a way to raise it
also of note, thats not mentioned on the matrix
if you do not sub, your AA slider is stuck at 50% and cannot move it
- its no issue if you are already 90 but annoying otherwise when leveling
