I'm only halfway through reading this but I just had to post this amazing quote.
"Once this plan was mapped out, we then blotted out the sun and the stars, summoned forth fog, thunder, and lightning, lit ritualistic candles, and handed our final request off to the tools programming team. They, in turn, invoked their most sinister black magic and tore the needed code straight from the minds of the ancient gods, trapping it in an awesome tool set, allowing us to accomplish all our wicked—er, cinematic conversation needs."
Yet another great blogpost. Liked seeing those video examples, of how the new cinematics look & sound with English VO. But what I really found interesting was this image, showing the kind of software ArenaNet used to sort out the lip syncing. Like seeing the phenomes & keying. The kind of stuff I'm interested and the reason why I like ArenaNet as a developer because they get down to the nit & gritty, not dumbing things down for us.
Great blog post! I like it when they are a bit meatier and I've done a little computer animation myslef, so I really have an appreciation for the details given.
Most of the original GW cut scenes were cringe worthy. The placeholders we have seen in the demos were better than that, but still had issues. The new system is amazing!
I just started playing Skyrim last night and I wish the character models, armor and animations were even half as good. Seems like Arenanet is taking another area where MMOs used to lag behind solo RPGs and really raising the bar.
Very good stuff. I think they may have finally done something that no other video game has done...they actually had me looking at the character's faces while they talked, rather than reading the subtitle text like I usually do. I can't stand bad lip synching and animations, especially in cut scenes that are supposed to heighten immersion and improve storytelling. I think I'm really going to enjoy watching these scenes for the story and the characters. I hope they are able to do as well with the non-human races...lip synching is going to be difficult with the Charr.
I know i haven't been the most optimistic about the game, but i will say that the graphics have improved, and i will also say that they the cinematics are better done then most of the MMOs released, With that said i disagree on it being better then single player games,
Things like red dead redemption and Mass effect for example have better dialogue deliveries.
Things like a stand of with rex in mass effect where you were worried about how to proceed becuase you maybe didn't want to lose him, or talking to that con-man merchant fellow in RDD.
That invokes connection.
I looked at both the videos and the nurse gave the aura that she was concerned for the players welfare which is good, no qualms about her, the PC was okay, nothing real memorable there.
But the second video, not sure i even want to go into that.
I'll just say it felt like they were reading lines far more then actually involved in anything. Graphics have improved, but still got a ways to go with the delivery.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
You can't really expect the same level as cinematic focused single player games like Uncharted and Mass Effect but That's certainly better then Skyrim at least.

The thing is that in a single player game you've got the ability to have your actors doing motion capture with each other, acting out the scene. They can record their dialog together so that they can respond naturally, both in timing and in inflection.
With an ambitious game like GW2, you've got 10 different main character voice actors instead of just one (Nathan Drake) or two (male or female Commander Shepherd).
If you've only got one scene to act out with only a handful of main characters, you can act out the scene and get it right in a couple of takes. With so many characters and different branches of storyline, it seems only feasible to have people recording their dialog once, by themselves. Once you do that, it just can't be as good as a game which can afford to do what Uncharted does. I'm sure it will sound extremely competent and be pretty well done, but will always be slightly off at the same time.
"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it."-Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
They really set a standard in the MMO industry with this one.
I wouldn't go that far, but the least we can say is that the cinematics have improved considerably. And not just the cinematics, the looks of characters, customization, all starting to come along really nicely. I think that this game will be great when Anet is ready with it. A game really worthy of a AAA rating.
GW2 triumphs again. This was pretty much the ONLY thing about the game I didn't like, and they've ripped out their placeholders and have blown by TOR in terms of believable looking characters. Hell yeah.

Saying that you realize that FaceFx is a seperate program and has no association with ArenaNet?
And that it's a pretty standard program that's been used in most very big AAA games of the past years?

So. When did I ever say I was glad they were showing off the kind of proprietary software ArenaNet used? Here's a hint, I didn't. I'm a video editor/producer. I make videos, but I recently got into 3D modeling software like 3D Studio Max and I'm always interested in learning new things. What's wrong about expressing my appreciation, for learning something new, thanks to a very open developing studio.
There were complaints about the lip sync and the fact that the way Anet was delivering their dialogue in these videos looked pretty uninspiring. I think it is shaping up pretty nicely. Some will still complain anyways about the advancements, or they will find something else to fault the game on all while forgetting how unpolished the game is. The fact that they said the previose demo vidoes were only placeholders while they continued to fine tune the many areas of the game seems to be lost on some that just do not want to give the team credit for their work. I liked the read and like the way the game is shaping up.
My only question..... was this the news we were expecting to be released on 11/11? I know they said it wouldn't be a reveal of the last class nor a date for beta, but other than that there was no real clue what they would be letting us in on. I hope that wasn't it, but if it was......... I guess I'll keep waiting for another nugget to be tossed our way.

This is all the news they said we will get, and I don't quite understand why people expected them to do any special reveal. Actually they only said we'll get "a blogpost" this week but in the end we got 2. Now it's the end of the working week, so don't expect anymore news to come out from ArenaNet for a while.

I definately wasn't expecting anything. I was hoping, however, that there would have been more than a couple blog posts. Especially since the last I heard, the team was pretty hopeful for a beta before years end. I am content with the info thus far but I will continue to look for info where I can get it. I might also add there is plenty of downtime heading my way since the semester is almost over and then the holiday breaks kick in. This feeds into me having more free time to ask these type of questions and learn what I can.

Seems a weird thing to appreciate a studio for when they're just using standard software and a single google-search would lead you to more in-depth and detailed information.
But hey, if you want to appreciate them for doing that then by all means. You shouldn't be surprised when some put a few questions with that though.

Watched my self listening rather then reading. It somewhat reminds me of Vindictus but much better.
