1. Download patch 1.1 if you haven't already, it upgrades the UI controls and mouse accessibilty, You can click on things easier, assign things to your mouse keys faster.
2. You can use WSAD to navigate the menu pretty quick, instead of the arrow keys as they said
i have read that Steam will auto-patch the game.
is this true? and how can i tell the difference? does it say 1.1 somewhere?
dl'ing the patch from a website was always easy, and at least i saw it happening. i'm not a fan of steam.
I actually really like the UI. When you're navigating menus, think of WASD as the analog directional pad on a controller.
The most confusing part of the UI is the Skills menu. Using the mouse on the Skills menu is absolutely pointless. When you're on the Skills menu, use W to move up, A to move left, D to move right, and S to move back in the menu. Then use E to select the perk you want.
It's confusing at first, but once you figure it out it's actually quite nice.

to be honest, i lOVE how the keyboard accesses the menus. my only problem is how remapping certain keys breaks their function in the menus.
the ONLY problem i have with the game so far is re-mapping a few keys.
ex- i like to 'activate' with the F key, but if i change it, my favorites key is broken in the menu.
ex- i like to have 'run' on the R key, but if i change it, the drop item function in the item menu is broken.
yes. this is very frusterating. i have TES3 and 4 mapped almost exactaly the same, but Skyrim won't allow it. i have to get used to this setup and im not too thrilled about it.
but other than Key mapping, i think the game is AMAZING so far.
I bound my activate to "Q" and the favorites still work. Similarly, I don't use just "run" (just a combination of always run and sprint) so I bound that to somewhere way off my range (like P), but I can get dropping to work.
By default, "R" is sheath/unsheathe, so to drop a weapon, press the button you set sheath/unsheath to. Same for the favorites. There is only one exception: they game's menu don't register Mouse4, Mouse5, or Mouse3 for whatever reason, at least not for me.
So I can set sheath/unsheath to "P," and then i can then use "P" to drop items (instead of "R"). However, if I set it Sheath/Unsheath to Mouse4, it will break the ability to drop items since the menu doesn't register those buttons.

Q brings up "favorites". These are skills/items you want to use very quickly.
I wouldn't worry about wanting to use coloquialisms. I don't judge.
Thanks Sovrath. Since the game's button help icons don't reflect changed keys, I always need to find out what the key does by default (I set my "Q" to activate, for example).
As for the Favorites menu, I don't like it. I tried it for an hour, but ultimately I don't mind just using the Quick Inventory/Quick Magic access instead.
Anyone find these goofy on the PC? Some of the menu items I can click with mouse, some I can't and need to move the keyboard. Am I the only one with this issue?
30mins in i plugged the 360 controller into the PC and have been playing that way. The keyboard and mouse setup is just too counterintuitive at the moment, hopefully it's patched or a mod sorts it out as i've been getting the evil eye from the other half for having skyrim on the TV and lounging on the couch with thr controller.
I did the same thing. The controller is awesome for just about everything. Really took the learning curve of the new UI right out.
I just can't get used to the consoel controllers. I must be the only person on the planet that finds them awkward.
No, I hate them too for anything other than platfomers. They are just hands down inferior. Sucks that an otherwise good game caters to such a poor control method. But hey, f*** PC users. They're use to it. They'll still pony up the cash without developers having to do anything to cater to them.
Guys, I have the xbox360 wired controller now and it works like a charm. HIGHLY recommend the $29 on amazon or best buy for it. It just makes everything so much easier. Now just get an HDMI cable, connect the PC or laptop to a big screen, go into control panel and change the default on the audio, and you will be good to go. :-).

Im first of all a PC Gamer secondly i got a high end PC and i just refuse to play on my PC if im playing console noway.
Im use to UI now and combat and movement is not bad at all with keyboard/mouse plus camera is very well done. The Witcher 2 was alot more console with dumb camera and movement then Skyrim.
But ill stick to my keyboard/mouse and my verygood PC monitor.
Hope to build full AMD system RYZEN/VEGA/AM4!!!
