Entire MMO Accidentally Deleted by Company

LenceLence Member CommonPosts: 109

First and foremost the chances of you being effected by this are, well… pretty small. However, this is nothing if not hilarious. Ok, well, hilarious for someone who isn’t a part of the game itself, nor had even heard of it, and to even learn about this story had to visit a site laden with pornography (the things I do to bring you the news…) But, a game company has unintentionally deleted its MMO and isn’t able to recover it.

To say such a thing is awe-inspiring to someone who’s been in the MMO market for over a decade is a dire understatement. Japanese game developer Sankando and game operator Hangame had to make what must be the worst announcement (at least of those not pertaining to FFXIV, BAMM!) in MMORPG history with regards to their “M2″ title:

“There is something we must inform our valued customers of.

On the 21st of October, 2011, at 20:00, we undertook emergency maintenance on the server due to a critical issue.

Service was to resume promptly, but work performed by Sankando could not restore the game’s data. It is tremendously regrettable, but unfortunately we have no choice but to end service.

Thank you all for enjoying M2 for so long! Our heartfelt apologies for it having turned out like this.”

I shocked that SWG didn't make an excuse like that.

:scratch head: Didn't we have this exact same thread just last week?

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

you know, when you make a game and spend alot of money to make it, you should never have backups.  backing up something valuable is always a mistake.  More mmorpgs should follow these people's fine example.

The game is dead not, this game is good we make it and Romania Tv give it 5 goat heads, this is good rating for game.

They don't deserve to be in the mmo business anyway. If you delete your mmo by accident I want no part in anything you make, that shows a disregard to safe keeping your data. Also porn on their mmo site? Really, who the hell would play such an mmo with porn ads on their site, what a cheap crap game company. So yeah this is hilarious and at same time who cares.

Yeah! We don't want porn on our MMO websites! We want porn in our MMOs!

.........or at least I do .

That's really scary. I have been in game production (not MMO) and it's a lot of sweat before you have anything. I can't even imagine what I have done if it had happened to our team.

    That sounds very traumatic.

This is weird. I went to the site that the OP mentioned in his post and for some reason it looked REALLY familiar. It was like deja vu or something. Almost like it was copied word for word and posted somewhere else without being credited as such. But who would do such a dickish thing as that?

Oh yes. Epic failure of a company for sure. I hope they never work again.

I am completely confused what people are thinking when then post stuff like this.

I dont like the idea of playing WoW, GW2, and many other games. But why would I want to see them gone ? Others might enjoy playing that stuff, why would it hurt me if they do ?

Seriously, I dont know WHAT it is, but SOMETHING is wrong with that poster.

I hope their legal team is better than their software source control managers, as I would expect a class-action lawsuit from the users of the game for loss of virtual goods due to negligence. That is assuming they have no intention of offering refunds, of course.

So have we learned our lesson here? ALWAYS DO BACKUPS!

Data backup is something normal in any bussiness. That company failed hard.

I totally agree . Hes probably some sad little fan boy thats terrified people will leave his mmo of choice ( most likly Warcraft ) for STWOR and feels the need to come in here and validate his choice of game because hes so insecure . Hope for his sake hes not older than 12 years old because if he is there is something wrong with him even if its just a severe lack of maturity . One things for certain hes not tested TOR .

And yet you are looking at this site, which btw is being mocked on many other sites (not even gaming sites) for there soft core porn ads. Personally I dont care what ads this site has but to mock something about porn on an MMO site while posting here just seems a tad silly to me.

If cleavage = porn then the internet needs to be shut down.  Even Sesame Street had the whole Katy Perry incident.

Edit: Oh yeah, my ON topic comment: It's a darn shame :(

Can you imagine the outrage if?

From Blizzard Entertainment, World of Warcraft:

We are sorry for the inconvenience, but during our last maintenance, we accidently deleted the game. A free copy of Diablo 3 will be issued to all our subscribers.

Hmmm, maybe that wouldnt be so bad.  You think?

    LOL

I don't believe them for one minute, they most certainly can restore the information off the hard drives or from other sources.I would say their game was in poor state so they made up bs to quietly shut the game down.Hangame is a pretty big publisher they would be running their own versions of the game and the developer would have other versions of the game and i am sure some of the bigshots had the game and information on their home pc's.This was simply a game that wanted to shut down.

This story has to be hoax.

With the back up sevices available today even if your entire building burns down the data is not lost. Amazon.com sells a service called A Cloud Drive. It can be used to back up anything off site on data centers redundently in 3 different contenents and it only costs a few dollars per day to backup a Terabyte of data. There are other companies out there that sell similar services and they are well know in the IT industry for more than a decade. For example on 9/11 several Insurance companies, Law firms, and Investment banks were completely opliterated losing all their computers and most of their employees killed yet no data was lost on that day because it was already common practice to back critical files up in off site data centers. That was a decade ago and now they teach this stuff in schools to all IT professionals to know about and use these services which are now cheaper and easier to use than ever before. There is no excuse for losing data in this day and age under any circumstances.

No one felt sorry for at least some of the people working there?

Mistake or not, the people might have worked hard on this game and will have lost a job due to this.

Nah, I guess we are all heartless pricks who laughs at shitz like this.

How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW?
As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.

actually SOE (Source Of Evil) used this argument in the post nge days. They said it is impossible to rollback to SWG CU or Pre CU because they don't have backups of the server code for these time frames. At least that is what they told us at the Community Summit 2006 at the Game Convention in Leipzig (Germany). Also they admited that even if they would have backups noone of their current dev team would understand the Code from Raph Kosters Team anymore.

I can believe the "we dont understand" part - but the parts with no backups is well simply a blunt lie from them.
