What do you think? what is going to be the top-notch MMO in 2012? Do you think it is going to be one of upcoming MMORPGs or a continuous popularity for one of the existing MMOs?
First of all if you starrt that topic state what do you mean by "top-notch MMO"?
You mean : number of subscribers? or number of peak concurrent users? number of NEW users coming to a game? amount of money game earned? what game will have best press? what game will have best 'community' (forums and blogs) reception? What game will have most innovative gameplay?
Your question is FAR too generic to even attempt an answer.
The mmorpg GW2 doesnt count because its free...if gw2 had the same amount of game boxes sold as swtor still wouldnt count because swtor will have paying costumers...and gw2 will not so its not possible to mesure the sucess os GW2 compared to a p2p game.
Well its possible, a p2p game is allways more sucessfull then a f2p game with the same box sales.
In my opinion the only way to compare p2p, b2p and f2p (for the purposes which game is the biggest) is revenue. Through that metric you loose dificult to definitions of "What exactly is considered an active player" and you catch all the different business models with one thing, whether it's subscription fees, box sales or microtransactions.

While the business may be most interested in peak and sustained revenue...think the players might be more interested at a glance, in looking at peak connections? No doubt they'll want the business side to do well, so the game can continue ongoing development as such - but it's a MMORPG - they'll want the massively multiplayer angle as well - given the nature of trying to compare F2P, B2P, and P2P - PCUs might work better for some players than revenue.
People might pay a sub but rarely login...
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

Oh, GW2 will have paying customers...trust me. I'll be spending on this game.
i played very little of the origanal guild wars, but from what i do remember, it wasnt really a mmo.
Unless you were in a town or in a party with another person, you were pretty much on your own, is GW2 going to be the same way?
If so, i cant really classify it as a MMO, so with that id have to say SWTOR will be the top NEW mmo to come out.
After getting to beta test it, i can say IMO that once word of mouth gets out about this game, it will see nothing but an increase in sub numbers.
I may be totaly wrong about how GW2 is set up as far as how much interaction you get with other players, i havnt really read all that much about it since i didnt really care much for the first one, wich is why i played it so little.
Yes, there will be a top MMORPG in many different categories. There will be certain websites that name a top mmorpg. Every player will choose a top MMORPG. Various charts using subs / sales / population will choose a top MMORPG.
I bet there will be no less then 5,000 top mmorpgs in 2012.

It's posts like this that make me think that naming the game GW2 was a misstep because it makes the people who didn't like GW1 reluctant to bother checking it out.
To answer your question, GW2 is a true MMO with a massive, persistent world. It's also just about 100% different than GW1 except for the lore, so I think people who both liked and disliked GW1 might find something to like in GW2.
It's also B2P which makes it a very affordable side game option even if you're already planning on playing SWTOR or some other game.
I think you should really check it out before dismissing it.
To make this post on topic, I'll say that it's my pick for top MMORPG in 2012.

In terms of sales numbers or quality? If it's sales, SWToR by a league. If quality, Guild Wars 2 by a length -- a very comfortable length.
EDIT: And if it's based on sub numbers, WoW will continue to dominate.

SWTOR by a long shot.
Many/Most of us will be able to see for ourselves in a few weeks with the large, pretty-much "open" beta weekend coming up.
Some of us have already seen for ourselves, but cannot comment.
So I can't tell you WHY I think TOR is going to be "the" MMO game of 2012, but publically available information on pre-ordered and such should be enough of a starting point to see that this game is going to be HUGE.
I'm confident that WoW will continue to dominate as far as sub numbers go.
I don't expect SW:ToR will have the longevity that WoW has had, can't say why I think that until the NDA is lifted, I expect a dive in numbers after the first few months.
TSW - Probably not a major player unless they shift their marketing up 100 notches closer to release, then there's the all important launch which Funcom don't have a good record of...
Rift - probably happily picking up some of the WoW players that couldn't cope with the dominance of story line in SW:ToR, if Trion keep pushing out updates as they have then it should bubble along quite nicely, I'd like them to surprise us and take the game in a totally unexpected direction.
Archage - How much of a sandbox is it? Likely still a niche title if it is predominantly sandbox, don't see it making a big impact in 2012, I honestly don't know enough about it
Tera - Nothing majorly new about this game, the political system and targeting system sound ok but are they enough to woo players away from titles that tick all the other boxes that Tera does?
GW2 - Likely to have good initial sales if the betas have gone down well, I also expect this title to see steady sales post release, the B2P model does a hell of a lot for them there, players needing a break from the other titles will pick it up, word of mouth will be another thing IF they deliver (I personally expect them to, I like what they are doing with game mechanics, art, lore etc, the demo was great fun and I respect the company). At this point things for GW2 in 2012 look very good.

I agree with most of your post except that SWTOR will take a dive (beta restrictions on this topic though =/), and Archeage. From what we have seen Archeage is only half sandbox and half themepark, so in my opinion, the only thing that can keep it back in the west is poor westernization. With that said, Archeage certainly wont have 1 or 2 million subs in the west but I think it will still be pretty popular here on these forums. To me its like the Vanguard that never was.
Archage - How much of a sandbox is it? Likely still a niche title if it is predominantly sandbox, don't see it making a big impact in 2012, I honestly don't know enough about it
It is more like themepark with added some sandbox features.
server vs server vs server, 100.000 people on one huge PVP map. And the battle takes up to 2 weeks before one sides takes all the rewards for winning........ check
Come on. You don't really believe this now, do you?
Yes I do. 3 servers with 33000 players on each will all be online at the same time, and they will all play PVP at the same time.
No, I dont really believe that. But it will be interesting to see how it goes, can the servers handle say 10.000 people on one map. Cant wait to find out
Sure thing, I heard NCSoft will use some alien technology, they can even handle 1.000.000 people with all their bling bling und shiny at same time without lag.
Did you ever played daoc or Aion ? when more then 50 people come together its unplayable.

Speak for, let's say DAOC or AOC, but saying in Aion, when more then 50 people come together it's unplayable , is clear that you didn't play the game! I have a mid range computer, and I don't have much problems running Aion when there are 150+ players at the same time. When more then 200 players are at the same time, I need to lower some options, hide players and such !
So no, NcSoft does not have some alien uber super technology, but they are able to give ( at this time ) some pretty impresive masive battles with little to no lag!
Reporter: What's behind Blizzard success, and how do you make your gamers happy? Blizzard Boss: Making gamers happy is not my concern, making money.. yes!
Well, I'm going to be completely honest here. When I first "experienced" SWTOR in its early development I was a bit skeptical on its development. There were many issues and features unavailable and little detail on their actual involvement within the game. The graphic choice I still think is a mistake. However, on a buisness level I understand the reasoning to keep it on a lesser playing field to reach a greater population. Keep in mind the graphics as they are, actually ARE not half bad. It has undergone major improvement since then. I took part in last weekends test and found myself in a completely different game. The team has nearly polished the game. However, there are a few minor bugs present but nothing game breaking and nothing that will really hinder playablity. I never would of thought SWTOR PvE would impress me as a Hardcore PvPer. But its PVE was actually one of the most rewarding gaming experiences I've had in a long time. Now on terms of PvP It has a lot of potential and I believe they have the right "PVP" team for the job and by pvp I mean Open World. With the way the combat works and the classes there is a lot of room for some serious epic open world pvp encounters. Ilum seems promising and if they develop this system beyond just ilum into patches, expansions, etc. We might see a game with great open world pvp experience.
On a side note I really hate instanced "I poke you, you poke me. Lets keep it up till we achive victory."
Well just have to wait and see. Bioware/EA both have the funding to maintain this game and keep content coming in. Whether or not they deliver will determine the success or demise of this game. This goes for PvE as well as PvP content. No game can truly succeed without them both.
We are all aware of EA's rep and their constant tendency to ruin games. But you can't underestimate Bioware.
I have decided that I will Indeed play SWTOR at release. Whether or not I sub to it will factor in on its Open world pvp and content plans.
I'd expect SWTOR to be #2 behind WoW... Sorry to say it but I've come to accept the fact that WoW will always be followed by millions of "mindless" Zombies.
What do you think? what is going to be the top-notch MMO in 2012? Do you think it is going to be one of upcoming MMORPGs or a continuous popularity for one of the existing MMOs?
I included Kingdoms of Amalur because they have stated they will turn it into a MMO and it was originally slated to be a MMO.
#1Kingdoms of Amalur Hey nevermind the blonde watch the video :P...nerd host however bah. This will be extremely polished, have a great story, great art [better than GW2]offers what many like the open class system and wil lhave great animations and effects. It has all the elements you expect from a MMO.They really overspent on this game about the same cost as SWTOR but i am guessing at SWTOR's cost, somewhere around 100 million give or take another 20/30.
#2ArcheAge This game often looks same old but does alot more.Example Popular Eve you can't actually ride your ships nor do you have an actual player nor can you board enemy ships, you can do all of that in AA.This game could easily be the best however i see some things that might not sit well like the typical Korean animations that look like not enough .ani frames in the animation. However the UI looks to be N.Americanized for simplicity.AA ca neasily be the best game by far but we need to see it's polish and overall depth of design.
#3SWTOR I have a few concerns that i don't like example the crafting.I take crafting as a serious part of a game and to have it done in auotmated mode by your bot is not in good favor with me.I cannot stand anything automated or offline. This game is really on the bubble it might be the best or it might drop down several ranks.
#4GW2 This game carries a lot of controversey as to what is good and what is not. This narrator is definitely 100% biased,he simply cannot see or just does not achknowledge the down side of the exact ideas he is hyping. There is a definite bad side to everyone of the 10 reasons.I will use one example...He talks about f2p and quality and talks about EPic scaled objects.Well GW does not have useable buildings they have no insides,so no they do not carry the same quality as paid games that spend a lot of time making buildings useable. That one picture was a Guild Hall picture, nothing but a pre zone in picture.
#5TERA This game could be anywhere top 5,i think we seriously need to see the end result on release to know how good this actually is.
#6Blade n Soul i feel the game will be rather shallow and just be intriguing for it's sex appeal and over animated fights. However i can see many people getting into this.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Without sounding too biased, Guild Wars 2 does have insides to buildings now just as some other MMORPG's. Guild Wars (original) does not, but Guild Wars 2 will have taverns, shops, houses, tombs, etc. to go inside and explore.

TSW and possibly GW2 will probably be the best games.
