MMOs similar to Second Life?

TahamtanTahamtan Member Posts: 232

Guys,

What other MMOs are similar to Second Life? When Second Life first came out I was amazed by its potential specially the fact that they designed an in-game economy in a way that Game's money is convertible to real money and some top players have positive balance, but all this was a few years back and I don't know any other MMOs that could implement even a better economy. Also second life didn't seem to have much of progress later on and it was just a good start. Have you seen any good MMOs like that? It is just one of the really untapped areas that has potential to develop lots of cool new MMOs based on this sole concept.

There are other virtual worlds, but to my knowledge, Second Life is the most developed.

If you are good at crafting in Second Life, it can help you get a RL job. What other "MMO" can offer that :)

Second Life is pretty much it.

There are lots of Second Life clones, but they don't have the userbase or economy that Second LIfe does. If you're just in it for the game itself, or simply creating things with no profit, then you might look into Open Sim. When I say "clone", I literally mean clone. You can use the same Clients SL uses: Official, Emerald, Snowglobe, etc.

There was a game called Blue Mars, that was very very close to release that would have brought SL Type games to a whole new level. The game was about 75% done and allowed for alout more developer freedom, where developers could truely make games, sims, and pretty much anything they could think of.

However, January 2010, they announced completely out of the blue that they were scrapping the entire PC Client and going for an Avatar based iPhone App. Don't expect to hear from this company ever again. I'm just glad the only time I invested in it was the few minutes I spent on the game and the little bit of time I learned what it was. I feel sorry for all those who invested money into the game. Server Space (land) was probably close to 100 times more expensive than in SL.

Exactly my point. Second life is far ahead of others and has been there for many years but no other company goes after the similar concepts which to me have a lot more potential that ehat Second Life has already developed.

there are other "3d chat worlds", "virtual worlds", "social worlds", etc., things that people will lump together with SL....

but yeah..... in reality nothing else has but a fraction of the features and abilities of second life.

There is no money in it.

There have been quite a few trials of worlds like SL developed after the major success and profits SL saw in 2005/6, but every-single-one of them either completely crashed, and crashed EXTREMELY hard (THERE, etc), or were cut off before they were released. The reason most were cut off before release, was mostly because SL has seen a decline so fast since 2005/6, that only the SWG NGE patch beats it.

Big names got into the bandwagon too. Including Microsoft and Google both, as well as quite a few big but smaller names. All of them have cancelled their projects.

Sad, I really had high hopes for Blue Mars. I wish there was a game exactly like SL, but much more updated and with more quality. The thing I dont' like in SL is that nothing is real. I got pretty heavy into LSL, which is documented very well, but I didn't like the fact that almost everything you could do that was cool, new, unique, or sometimes just a standard feature to an item.......... was basically just tricking LSL into doing what you want it to do, rather than having direct access and the power to create what you really want.

What I mean by this, is look at any Game/MMO Sim. It's all a trick. There are a few Golf Sims out there, take a look at them. The scripters didn't actually make a golf game, they tricked LSL into doing things that kinda seemed like a Golf Game. Where as in Blue Mars, you actually MADE a golf game, or a flight sim, or an MMO. The scripter/programmer actually had the power and ability to make what they want.
