MMO Redo. What engine would you choose?

KeynoKeyno Member UncommonPosts: 47

If you could remake your favorite MMO, which graphics engine would you choose - Frostbite 2 (BF3) or Creation Engine  (Skyrim)?

I personally would have EQ redone in Frostbite 2.

I do believe just thinking about that would catch my 5 yr old computer on fire lol

I don't know either of those.  Personal favrorite of mine is whatever LOTRO uses.   Long view distance, imposter  trees at a distance, decent ground clutter density.  Love the scenics it does.

AOC's engine a close second with all the normal mapping on terrains and buildings

I would redo the original Asheron's Call with the AC2/LOTRO engine.

    Shadowbane with Unreal or Cry.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

I would try to make one of my own.

For our informatics class we had to make a tiny renderer in DirectX9, I managed to get a spinning cube. I was incredibly excited that I managed to do that at the time lol.

There are some pretty good games out there where they have used a proprietary engine.  They've either taken a look at the commercial engines out there and determined they did not meet their needs or wanted to have that greater control over the engine without having to try to fix the wheel.

There are some good free engines out there - that one could tinker around with while getting an idea of what they wanted to include in the design of their own engine.

One that is developed with purpose of making MMOs in it. Sure DCUO was made in Unreal, but the openw orld there isin't exactly huge. Why use a tool that's not suited for the work You want to do? You can hammer the nails with a screwdriver but why not just use a hammer instead?

Depends. But if I wanted to start now and release date is 5 years in the future or so I probably would use Cryengine 2.

But that is with a great budget and a good team. With less budgetI would use a simpler engine and focus more on art instead.

As for the guy who suggested AoCs engine, I wouldn't use it. Not because it is bad but because it seems that adding more content with it is really hard and time consuming work...

i would redo WoW, GW2, CoX, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, and Swtor on Unreal Engine 4 when it comes out in the near future... or at least on Frostbite 2.

    "keeps dreaming"...... lol ;)

SOE's new engine they're using for Planetside 2, and use it for DAOC.

They are using it for the new EQ game as well, which is supposed to be partly a remake of the first EQ.

Not DaoC 2 but might still be interesting for us MMO vets... Unless Smed botch it up again.

FFXI with Unreal 3 engine.I would use UE3 for any game for that matter, easily the leaders in the industry.Don't let any lazy efforts from the unreal engine fool you the engine is incredible with already made tool sets that leave no excuse by the developer. They can even check their own work inside the editor to make sure it will be playable and not full of mistakes.

It's new xbox 360 software will allow devs to make the best quality games and it's new Ios tech will allow the next gen top of the line App games for your tablets/iphones.

What is even more amazing is that any developer can grab the UDK kit and start working for FREE,they only need license it when they go commercial. So they can test it out and see if it can deliver what they want and not cost them a cent.Every other engine the developer is taking a risk not only in it's capabilites, but weather or not they can learn to use it fast enough or if the tools are to their liking. So a smart developer could use the free UDK kit to start training their employees before hand.IMO it allows for the best chance to make the best possible game.

Engines only go as far as the tallent of the programmers and the artists, even the most comprehensive engine will fail with the wrong people.

I don't really want to see any MMOs remade.  Even if they had to be remade, I'd rather the developers use their own custom engine or an engine they feel most comfortable with.  If I absolutely had to choose a MMO and an engine it would be probably be the original EQ using the latest Unreal engine.

Redo SWG with LoTRO's engine for terrain and the new EVE engine for characters - if you haven't seen CCP's engine for character models - it's fracking amazing.  (There is a reason half this forums seems to have avatars generated with it).

I wish they would redo AO with one of the newest engines.  That was one of the most complex games ever.  Had 3 faction pvp, a great skill system, and was one heck of a sandbox/themepark hybrid.  There was ALWAYS something to do.

     THIS !!!!!

good god could you imagine AC1's engine that lets you dodge magic and arrows with random loot but upgraded graphics?

I think i remember saying this when they started makeing AC2 i thought to myself, why not just use those millions to upgrade the graphics of the already perfect game AC1.
