I just assume the moment I connect my pc to the net, SOMEONE is going to be watching me.

    /shrug

But no, no Origin needed, they have a downloader like every other MMO.

I agree with the OP; there should be no agreement to scanning a PC, network utilization, or other datamining acceptance as part of the TOS for an installer/launcher. If they want to have a separate check-box for users to allow this - great. Otherwise, I wouldn't expect this to be required to use any specific software.

There really is no positive side to spyware because anything and everything they need to know is in the player/game logs already.I know games like to monitor player tendencies and stuff for tweaking/Beta but this would have nothing to do with it.The problem i have with it,is if Developers are SO worried about what we are doing, why are they not showing the same effort to crack down on rmt and cheating in their games?

I know for fact SOE has sold this type of information to various firms ,including marketing firms,so i wouldn't doubt others are doing it as well.Does it really hurt the player? No not really ,but like i said ,show the same effort to look after your game/cheating then nonsense like this would be more acceptable.

So that makes this 100% spyware to which there is a reason there is thousands of programs to  block just that.

Just to have alittle fun have an atorney write a letter for you to Origin asking why they and the Goverment are collecting data on my client ? See what comes back and go from there.

    This.

Origin may be needed for downloading for Early Access if you bought from Origin (digital editions), but you can remove it straight away once you've downloaded and you don't need it running to play.

(Edit: whoops, already been answered with quotes!)

Steam / Origin, IMO, is just another bullshit step I have to take in order to play a game. It's just a way they can stick advertising in my face ALL THE TIME. I could care less about a friends list, as all my friends are on Ventrilo.

You can't play anything without this burden anymore. Whatever happened to the days where you purchased a game, installed the game, and played it without having to fart around with crap you don't really need?

Just so there is no confusion, you don't need origins to play. Though that has been stated several times in this very thread.

Unless you digital download it from origins (only place you can digital download it) intend to get in on the 5 day early access, in which case you only need it to download the game (as this is where all digital downloads come from and this is just to get the start up client).

But once you have the game, either by downloading the start up client from origins or by getting the CD from any of the other retailers, you proceed as in every normal MMO. You start up the program (either CD or application) install the game, patch it and run it.

None of which requires origins (unless you fall into the one of the two categories above, early acces or digital download), origins is completely avoidable if you buy the CD and decide to wait till dec 20th.

All I have so far is a message telling me I'm going to get a beta invite.  Does anyone actually have the invite and download link yet?

Nope not yet, usually get it the beginning of the week that the test will start though. But no, haven't gotten anything yet.

You get the p2p client as a download from bioware site then you download essentially like a torrent.

There's a post on forums that origin will only be required for the live content as then EA will handle the bandwidth in house.

Yes snooping is a cheeky way to gather marketing info etc, and one would rather such shit being done, but if you know ur own mind anyhow and dont buy shit spammed into ones email box who would honestly royaly give a frack?

I dont normaly like to put the emphasis on this being said but normaly most people who are quick to attack such stuff is usually harboring pirated/cracked material on ones pc :D and that people is probably anyway about 80% of users of pc's

    Again.

    Its a mater of principle.

Suppose goverment made a new law where they will enter everyones home (at random times) when you are not present. And rummage trough your stuff. And if they find let say grass, they will be able to arrest you.

Does it means that people that oppose this areautomatically  grass smokers ?

    No

People simply dont like their privacy broken. They have no buisness rummaging trough my home.

And they have no buisness scanning my PC

its not an invasion of your privacy if your are told about it upfront.  your talking about two different things, one being a law and one being a private company checking your ram cache or something.  its not gonna scan your entire hard drive and send all your private information to the cops.  oh noes, paranoid much.   besides they have already backed off from the pc scans anyhow.  i dont know if you know this or not but pretty much every game you play does that, along with every website you go to, they all scan your pc to see what youve been looking up, or at least your random memory so they can send you junk crap.

if you dont like it, then dont use origin, no big deal.  i personally am not using origin, I have steam.  if i cant get a game from steam then I wont get that game.  dont even know why this required a thread, question has been answered multiple times on swtor website.  guess im gonna get another warning for this one too but eff it, dont get the game.  you are unable to go read for yourself so dont get it, swtor will be much better without people like you constantly making up crap to put the game down.

    yes you need to

This is bad information.    You do not need Origin to play the beta.

wrong, you get the start up client from bioware, not origins, its a download from their site, not origins site.  origins will not be needed to download, play, install or do anything else with this game.

My god, how hard is that to understand.  im gonna do it in big letters for the simple people

ORIGINS WILL NOT BE NEEDED TO DOWNLOAD, PLAY, INSTALL, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE WITH SWTOR.   IT IS 100 PERCENT COMPLETELY NOT GONNA BE NEEDED, NOT NOW, NOT IN THE PAST, NOT IN THE FUTURE, BIOWARE IS HANDLING IT 100 PERCENT.  IF YOU WANT TO USE ORIGIN, YOU CAN, IT IS AN OPTION, BUT NOT REQUIRED AS OF THIS TIME.  MAYBE THAT WILL CHANGE IN THE FUTURE, BUT THAT IS JUST SPECULATION AT THIS POINT.

now i wonder if that is clear enough for you guys to understand it.

Right & wrong at the same time lol, however, to get the new live system (when it's available) everyone will be forced to download through origin. As your pre-ordered cd keys are only usable through the origin client. The CDN for bioware is for housing the beta only.

show me the link for that.  the dev response i saw was origins will never be needed, you can download directly from bioware launcher and you wont need to download origins.  so show me the link to where you will need origins when it goes live.

Alright, and I'll give you the link where they were talking about beta only. Be right back.

    EDIT: just my luck LOL

Cameo3, you don't need origin to play the game even when it's live. You download the launcher from SWTOR.com nothing more than that. They already said this several times. Of course, if EA decides it needs origin that might change.

The thread everyone points to is the August thread when they were talking about the beta client. Remember at that time they were considering Origin to be the one and only place to even buy SWTOR (online.)

Hi everyone! We've seen some continuing confusion over this topic. Some of you have quoted text that appears on the Pre-Order Page that indicates you'll need to install Origin software to download the game. We are working to update the information on that page: you will not be required to install the Origin software in order to download, patch, or play the game (even during Early Game Access). You'll do that through our own site and launcher.

This is good news! I honestly can't stand the Origin software for Battlefield 3. I actually prefer the web interface so much more than that software, and it is more useful!
