Yeah it's been said, this game will not fill the void left by pre-nge or even post-nge SWG. It's a pretty simple game, much less complicated than SWG used to be (before it was dumbed down obviously). To be honest, the game didn't even give me much of Star Wars feel. At one point I forgot I was even playing a Star Wars game, then I heard the familiar lightsaber and blaster sound. SWG always made me feel like I was in the Star Wars universe for some odd reason, SWTOR does not for me at least. SWTOR is a fine game, just nothing even close to SWG.
You have the right mind set OP. Keep an opened mind about TOR. You may not like it or you may find yourself loving it.
Why should one keep an open mind about this new MMO? If you love Star Wars then you probably won't see another Star Wars MMO for another 7-10 if not longer. Give it a shot! Don't be closed minded.
And by that I don't meant that they made a sandbox that was polished.
I mean they started making the game from scratch as if the NGE was a good idea.
Thats so much false information its laughable.
I played SWG, and I completely understand the point the poster is making. This gaming system is what they tried and failed to put into SWG with the NGE.

Disagree about the Star Wars feel. This game really makes you feel like you are part of the Star Wars universe. Obviously, it's not open-ended like SWG was, but then again, it's got a TON more content and plays better than that game ever did. It's all a matter of preference, but I do tend to think SWG fans mistake great gameplay and content for great community, which is what SWG had the most of. The actual game itself paled in comparison to the community.
Again, it comes down to a matter of taste. This game is nothing like SWG, and I for one am happy about that. SWG fans, for the most part, won't be, which is understandable. If you are looking for the sandbox style of game that SWG had, then you won't find it here. If you are looking for the Star Wars "feel," then you may very well like this game.

Of course they failed. They tacked on a completely different game idea onto an existing game. It was a dumb idea from the start irregardless of whether making a game in the DIKU/EQ mold is a good or bad idea.
Something like the NGE is ALWAYS a bad idea since it was not done from scratch, from the ground up.
Since this is done from scratch that automatic disqualification is no longer true. If people don't think SWOTOR isn't following mostly the same design principles of the NGE then you are fooling yourselves. Maybe it also has some extra features like extra story and companions. But it has has WAY WAY crappier space combat. SWG NGE space combat is far far better than what will exist in SWTOR and its much older.
TOR fans dread the idea that SWTOR may have some sort of guilt by association with the NGE. They fear this because if Smedley could steal the TOR code base and then travel back in time and substitute the NGE code for the TOR code he would do it then have a massive orgasm.
That does not mean an SW game that is based around DIKU/EQ design is bad but both the SWG NGE and SWTOR are that kind of game. Sorry but that is just the way it is.
Anyway there can't be much false information in original post as there is very little information in it to begin with

Hmm didn't say anything about SWG's gameplay, community lack of content or whatever, just that the game felt more 'Star Wars'. Don't read too much into my post please to prove your point. I didn't say anything about which game was better or not, just that SWTOR did not give me a Star Wars feel. Of course the game "plays" better, it was made years later and had millions of more dollars pumped into it. .
I tried each of the three incarnations of SWG and personally, after putting about 30 hours into each stage of the game, the only thing I came away from it was severe annoyance at the bugs / lack of content AND disappointment that I would not be able to play with some of the people I had met. The community was great, but I just could not forgive the game for it's faults.
This game does not (according to some long term testers) have the problems with game breaking bugs that SWG had, nor does it lack in content like SWG did. On top of that, and from my own experience, the community seemed EXTREMELY helpful and friendly to new testers, lots of chatter and friendly banter going on, and very easy to get into a PuG. Three of the people I met in testing also now have my e-mail address and we are talking and making plans for starting our own guild. Oh, the exploration is very fun and the scenery well worth seeing, not to mention the little "extras" you find by exploring.
Is this a sandbox? No. But it is a heck of a lot of fun anyways and the presentation of the story is so powerful that I don't think you will mind loosing the sand.

At the time of production, SWG had more money put into it than any other game on the market. To top it off, they were charging folks to get into beta.
SWG revolved around burnt n crispy Uncle Owen, and has nothing on TOR when it comes to a SWs vibe. It makes me happy to know Koster had to leave the MMO realm, as he is the Uwe Bole of MMO production....IE his games lacks an entertainment factor for the majority of those that sampled his work.
Dont need him screwing up another major IP.
Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.
SWTOR has more of a starwars feeling than SWG ever was.
From what I saw, I have to agree as well. SW has always been about a story, and a predetermined path as the Force seems to have already known the multiple paths that lay before it. In a way, the multiple choices given, can be a symbol of the already chosen paths, although they may wander off a bit, of heros guided by the force.
Also it being a kotor extension, it is a great SW game, with a great SW story.
Of course, being over hyped or over analysitic of any game will ruin the experience, but taking it for what it is, an mmo, with a journey, it looks like it might be one of the few mmos worth playing through the story...possibly more than once, since each class also has its own story.
There are some unique things about swtor which set it apart from SWG.
The graphics
The companions with thier own story, love affairs, and punishment system
The crafting with companions
Open PVP world Illum
Detail worlds, large open worlds to explore like Coruscant
The combat, for some it might not be the FPS they are looking for in an mmo, but for an mmo it looks just right
Apparently there is gambling in the game, and SGRA with companions which is staying true to BW rep for including those in thier game
A mini game of space combat, which is called a tube shooter. Looks sweet, but people want the PVP like it had in SWG
There is a space ship tha is the player house.
Also there are mulitple endings for each class story and its all voiced
There is a dialogue wheel with multiple choice for good, bad, and neutral choices which affects alignment.
Also alignment has great importance. I think it affects gear, and NPCs and how they react to you.
So comparitively from a SWG comparison, there is no housing that is similar to SWG, space combat, but there seems to be everything else and much more. Also there are going to be expansions so who knows what there could be down the line.
There is a lot detail in the game, for example there are holocrons which are collected for stats, and add interesting lore. They can be collected all at the end, or if you like to explore it is an incentive.
Also the weapons have a lot unique sounds, and so do the same animals with different sounds. Which shows that it a lot of work put into the journey of a SW epic with VO with famous voice actors. The BH is the same voice of Cowboy BeBop.
In the community section of the forum in the general section there is a link to 'all info gathered on swtor so far' link by DarkKnight. I would post the link but at the moment thier website is going through maintenance.
Write bad things that are done to you in sand, but write the good things that happen to you on a piece of marble
A sandbox it is not - but a fully awesome Star Wars game it is.
If you are itching to get back into the Star Wars universe and have some amazing story that is very, very fitting to the Star Wars lore (especially the Knights of the Old Republic) then this is the game you've been waiting for.
I understand this is a themepark and I want to give this game an open minded a chance as possible. Everyone knows nothing will be as good as your first mmo, I don't want to be a bitter vet and want to enjoy another star wars mmo.
Beginning to understand they are very seperate games, but wanted to know things like.
- Is there much emphasis on non-combat activities? (crafting, cantinas, exploring)
Crafting is much improved to my way of thinking, because you can set up your companions to do it while you do other things. If you actually liked SWG crafting and the mind-numbing hours it took to develop resources and the grind your way through making stuff nobody would buy then this is definitely not the game for you. There are cantinas, and the worlds are reported to be huge, so yes to cantinas and exploring.
- Is there much chance to socialise? (Aka, not constant powerleveling to max level then going dungeons)
No way to be sure yet, really. There are cantinas, but how the social aspect of the game develops will have to be seen over time
- Is this game gear based?
Unfortunately, this appears to be a yes. Lots of stat boost items reported in other places.
- How is the PvP? (or hopefully faction vs faction)
A definite component of the game, with instances and open-world PvP content reported.
SWTOR has more of a starwars feeling than SWG ever was.
Having played both and having been a huge star wars fan for years and having played, read or watched most star wars related things, i wholeheartedly disagree.
However, i'm in the vast minority. Based on overall feedback i've see, i'd say there is an 80% chance of someone enjoying SWTOR. Which is definitely higher than any other MMO. It's definitely the next WoW - in every (good and bad) sense of that.

SWG had more of a Star Wars vibe to it than SWTOR, and it also had more of a community vibe. Going out on hunts in large groups for xp seemed to happen often in SWG, as well as just hitting a cantina and chatting away with fellow players. Does SWTOR even have chat bubbles in-world? I don't think I've ever seen them on any of the videos. Plus in SWG, as a noob you could pretty much go where ever your feet could take you--into dangerous areas you have no business being in, but have the freedom to explore them anyway. This game will have entire planets cut-off from other classes.
From what I've seen and read, one thing that I'm not looking forward to in this game is the way that some quest/missions are done. The whole "The bad guys are doing bad things, please stop them!" and that amounts to killing a certain amount of said "bad guys" to complete the mission? The "bad guys" are still there, you've just killed a certain quota. In SWG when you took on a mission, it would spawn a "bad guy" camp for you to destroy--not just go to an area and find 10 or 15 random "bad guys" to kill. Sounds trivial, but SWG's method made more sense.
One thing I've noticed about people that didn't like SWG is that many of them speak about game breaking bugs..I never ran into ANY of those types of bugs. Most of my woes were noob related--meaning I didn't know what I was doing. It was my first MMORPG. Was it perfect?...no, but no game is. In fact, anything you want to do, if you can't do it, then you see room for improvement.
This game will have it's fun memorable moments I'm sure, but it's not meant to be thought of as a replacement for SWG. Someone might one day create a Star Wars Sandthemeboxpark that incorporates all the positives from both games, but until then, I wouldn't try to substitute one for the other in my mind's eye...just play SWTOR for what it is, and hope that they never change it, even if it loses subs.
Let me ask you this OP, did you like SWG gameplay more than the fact that it was a Star Wars game? Put another way, would you have loved SWG if it had been named "Star Battle: Alien Wars!" and had none of the Star Wars lore?
As a three year OG vet of SWG (Intrepid/Bria), I concur that this is nothing, not even a little bit, like SWG. I was one who was hugely skeptical of this game, and I was quite sure I wasn't going to be buying it. After checking my email last week, and then getting sucked into a full weekend of 'internet research', well, let's just say I changed my mind and preordered it.
The key to my mind being changed started with me though. I had to let SWG go, and accept SWTOR on its own merits. Comparing the two games in any way at all is a waste of time.
I wish they would lift the damn NDA already. With tens of thousands of people beta testing, it's not like there are many secrets at this point.
A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

I was in first round SWG Beta, played right up to the day after NGE hit. MCH/MP Lowca
Being bound by the current NDA i will not get into the specifics of SWTOR however
I will tell you one of the previous posters coined it best ...
