Ive noticed a sudden increase in the number of appearances the word facebook has made on this site.
This is extremely disturbing because as much as I have tried, and I have tried, I could never get into ANY facebook game, let alone an mmo.
That being said, it is obvious these tidley winky games are chomping on some serious change. HOW? I have no freaking clue, but I guess people love to spend money on mouse clicks.
My fear is, that enlight of the last 3 years on this site, and the numerous discussions where profitability created the "WOW" clone and how no sandbox has proven profitable enough to forgoe the risk associated with its production and implementation, are we doomed to be forced into having facebook games as our only option?
I think I would rather be dead. Truthfully this is not an understatement.
Between what Skyrim has brought, and the potential of what guild wars 2 may bring, why is this site even giving facebook schlongerosos the time of the day? Im not saying they never should, but considering what we DO know, shouldnt these games have to earn their spots through advertising, and only get journalistic love once they prove they are bringing something new and polished?
Please MMORPG, do not damn us to facebook hell...PLEASE. If you do, then there will be no question that I died last year and I am slowly awakening to the realization that Ive gone to hell

I thought Facebook games were more like a trend that came and went. Few people might still play them, but I hardly hear about them at all anymore.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
Heh, there have been several things of late about them. Hell, it's Garriott's big push.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

i play FB games daily... addicted like MMO.
Social networking based games is a huge market and will continue to be a huge market. You would be kidding yourself if you thought differently.
I know some people like facebook games and they are a convenient waste of time. I guess it fits in with the whole F2P 2 minute attention span sort that this site seems to be wanting to cater to.
Profit may be a companies definition of success but it should not be a consumers.
I do not think that FB games pose a threat to regular MMOs. The capabilities of FB games just don't match those of regular computer games. They are probably provide some entertainment because they are accessible from any computer/tablet/phone with a connection to the web. I do not think anyone is gonna say, man I'm dropping SWTOR (or any game you choose) because FB came out with a FB MMO or whatever. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.
I self identify as a monkey.
I can't even get into Facebook, I still don't get what the point of that site is outside of telling the world your cat just threw up.
If you don't use Facebook, you can't do the crowdfunding to make your own F2P browser MMO.
How can you do the crowdfunding to make your own F2P browser MMO, if you don't use Facebook?

Go to game list, released and sort by title. 17 games came out in 2011 and 16 were item mall facebook, flash based browser rip offs with a hot pixel chick that isnt in the game. No doubt brought to you by the same people who RMT Bot the Sub based MMOs.
Oddly enough, I'm here and not there.
e-peen enlargement. i.e measure your worth by the amount of friends you have, by the amount of people who respond to your status updates, comments on your "sexy" profile pictures, stalking ex girlfriends. you know.. stuff about vanity.
but Facebook has it's communicative uses too. A friend of mine uses it to keep track on the tv shows he is watching with a group function. it gives him updates on everything. I think he belives it's easier to set up than RSS feeds in his email. he can just check facebook from anywere, and wont have to set all his devices up to some email client and then configure it on pc, mac, iphone, ipad , public computers and so on.
So I think FB simplifies some things in the communicative spectrum. with stuff like skype coming it will probably be even more in the future!? perhaps not. We will see.
Obviously:D
I have tried a few facebook games and truly cannot get into them. Some, you have to have be playing ALL THE TIME. Others, you have to spend real money to do anything. Most, you have to bug your facebook friends to give you things and take things you need to give away. They do, on the other hand, give people a false sense of "community", which more and more people seem to go to facebook to achieve.
For me, I certainly hope these games are NOT the future of MMOs.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.- FARGIN_WAR
