A lot of people in this thread keep saying no, they are not tired of fantasy mmo's but want a better made one instead. That's kind of a broad statement in my opinion, would some of you guys care to elaborate. How can a fantasy mmo that has dwarves, elves, orcs and such be made better than what is out there now.

Just because two games are fantasy that don't means they have to be the same.Malazan Book of the fallen (using this as an example to avoid the classic Lord of the rings) and a generic Dungeon and Dragons novel are both fantasy books but that don't means that the quality of writing is the same.Same with games, some people want more immersion and aventure in their mmos and less stats, grind etc which is why there is so much talk about skyrim lately.Still, when i think how players will destroy even the most immersive game world if they have the chance, not sure if the solution is a better mmo, maybe single player game with great AI for npc characters would be enough.

The first way would be to just put more effort into the game.  There's been several themepark quest driven games of the fantasy genre already, but they could be made better (imho) by adding diversity to the quests, as well as making them non-linear.  Or, even if there is a generally linear progression, put in more content than is necessary, so people can go to different zones or just skip over an area they don't want to do or redo the 2nd time.

Another way would be to partially or completely change up the gameplay mechanics.  Different games have tried with varying degrees of success to add other elements to the gameplay beyond the traditional quest model.  If the gameplay is fresh, people are going to look past it being in a generic fantasy setting.

And finally, just because it's fantasy doesn't mean it has to have those particular traditional elements.  It goes back to my original point about putting more effort into the game, but from a lore perspective.  To use Dragon Age as an example, maybe your elves aren't the semi-immortal, beautiful, haughty race, maybe they're a slave race trying to rebel against the humans (or whatever, been a long time).

TLDR Companies don't necessarily need to entirely reinvent the wheel, but should try and at least add their own unique touch to the gameplay and lore of what's come before.

Well Star Wars is pretty much fantasy in space.

Every imaginary story is fantasy anyways but you know very well what people mean when they say Fantasy in terms of MMORPG. And yes Star wars is also a fantasy but for purpose of discussion and reference to MMOS it is very much a sci-fi genre.

No that is not true. Every imaginary story is fiction. Star Wars does not fit into the definition of SciFi. Star Wars is an epic. True Sci-fi is books like Frankenstein, Cats Cradle, 1984, Fahrenheit 451, most works by Issac Azamoth and Arthur C. Clark.

Star Wars story does not depend upon it being in space. Jedi could be samurai, and the emperor an evil shogun, and its the same story.

The settings of Star Wars is very much sci-fi. it is not just the story but all the elemnets combined together that makes a story sci-fi or fantasy. And when i said all imaginary stories are fantasy i was talking out of the context of what defines genre.

as it originally was, of course.

although, i feel in this case it's a bit harsh to say star wars couldn't be counted in scifi. i think if you split your dvd collection up as i do, you wouldn't put star wars with the japanese sword films. and you wouldn't put it with historical dramas, either. but you'd probably chuck it in among aliens and the like. to me, it has spaceships. they go zap zap. that's enough for me to be scifi.

and azamoth? that's funny. thanks. i'm gonna use that from now on.

    Short:

    No

    Longer:

No, BUT tired of all mmorpg's that streamline themselves into graphic frame to countlessly run instances through LFG tools. Really tired of this concept.

I've been tired of fantasy for a few years now but lately it's kicked into high gear as I've been unable to even log into lotro anymore lately.

I find i't kind of funny people talking about being sick of fanatsy based mmo's and say they can't wait for ToR.  Don't get me wrong I am looking forward to it but it's still the same game as WoW, War, Aoc and aion the list goes on

It has the holy trinity class build , it has the differnt races and sides ( just because they look different and call it a new name it's still the same as gnomes and goblins )

    Mana = Force

Rage = energy or heat  etc etc

It has ranged dps magic and melee classes all based around fantasy roles.

I played the SWTOR beta weekend and you can pick out from the healers Druid = IA healer  Shammy = BH healer and Priest = SI healer.

I've gotta agree with this. People citing SW:TOR as their break from the Fantasy MMO genre, don't seem to understand that SW:TOR isn't true Sci-Fi and is more Space Fantasy. It pretty much has all the features & mechanics of a typical fantasy MMO, so wonder if it's an asthetics thing.

To those who site SW:TOR as their break from fantasy, it obviously feels like a break from fantasy to them.  Why should that matter to you people?  Why do you have to try to shit on their parade?

I want a better experience. Dailies and repeating raid content is not my idea of good content.

What I would really like is a sandbox fantasy game, a world like in The Elder Scrolls, that is well made. I'm hoping GW2 will present a good experience like that (yes I know it's not a sandbox) but that is about the only fantasy mmo that I"m looking forward to.

Not even a little bit, Im just tired of them been done poorly........

  • XthosXthos Member UncommonPosts: 2,740

No, I prefer them to the others, and I have been playing them since UO was released and rpgs and such well before then.

I even wish a massive, well made Forgotten Realms mmo would come out, that has a lot of sandbox.

i, for one, would die of pleasure for a fantasy game similar to eve.

i never got into eve because i'm not a scifi kind of person. but i love the concept and the scope of it. the depth of customization. it's awesome.

agree with the elder scrolls idea. just being able to be what you want to be. the game doesn't need "balance" among classes to be fun. if you lower the gap in stats between level 1 and max level chars, you could focus more on skill diversity and customization so the player ends up playing a char the way they want rather than looking to up their numbers to leet levels and pwn noobs.

gw2 is by far the most exciting thing for fantasy mmos.

but i really wish someone would take eve and run with it.

I thought I was tired of fantasy MMOs, but it turns out I was just tired of themepark MMOs (the majority of which I played were fantasy-based).

How can you be 'tired' of something?

Do people force you to play the next 'fantasy genre MMO' or something?

    I don't get it. :(

lets hope the elves and greenskins (aka orcs) in this City of Steam game dont bring their fantasy to it....i think  they could be swapped by cyborgs and any other non fantasy race.

I love fantasy MMOs and specially if it is a mix of Anime and Fantasy but what I hate is the lack of creativity in MMOs.

Mmorpg games tended to derive from d&d & lotrs and so on. In those forms (imagination and great writing/world-building) fantasy is fantastic (pun intended).

Over-exposure and shitty imitations and lack of variety is the problem.

So even a seemingly really good effort such as GW2, will take a small hit from the over-abundance of steaming piles of fantasy mmos lying on the proverbial street everywhere and conversely the ppl who prefer non-fantasy are still homeless.

I really enjoyed some of the issues raised in ME2 eg genetics, philosophy, ethics, a bit more of these in both genres would be welcome apart from glitzy images, I'm fine with. I think perhaps fantasy is also toned down, during the story there's nothing heroic about cutting swathes of creatures idling in the fields nearby, but making a moral choice or the outcome of an unexpected decision is the sea of bodies of some friendly race somewhere, that would be interesting and extraordinary in either sci-fi or fantasy. : )
