While that is bad... I'd still put how SOE changed SWG as the biggest screw up in mmo history
lol how did i know someone would post this.my greatest nightmare is logging into swtor and hearing someone moaning about nge.
how can a total wipe and lose of a game be as bad as a game altered ,no matter how bad you percieve the alteration.
Even after all this time people can't seem to get over it.
It will be reminded over and over for next 5-10 years easily. It is already permanently written into mmorpg history. Things like that don't get forgotten quickly.
Well yeah I heard about about this small f2p game getting 'accidentaly deleted', it is either mega lol (backup anyone?) or just good excuse to immedietaly close this game cause it was deficit and just creating costs for company.
Apart of that. Biggest screw ups in mmorpg history by me:
1. SWG - yeah I did that
2. Vanguard (could be great game and succesful one if it was released 1 year later + had decent support)
Even after all this time people can't seem to get over it.
Because it's a special case, it was the whole playerbase telling SoE they were going to mess it up, SoE not listening and actually messing it up just like the playerbase predicted.
It's one thing to mess something up, it's another to have someone tell how not to, to ignore it, and to mess up anyway.
That would be like telling a kid not to drive without hands, the kid doing it anyway and falling flat on his face.
Well, alienating your playerbase overnight with a massive overhaul is bad...
But this? Come on, this is in a league of its own. Accidentally *deleting* your MMO and not being able to put it back up takes the cake anytime, from any game, probably ever.
Actually I'm having a hard time a) believing this, and b) imagining a worse screw-up.

it could be a cop-out to discontinue your MMO I guess
it seems really fishy that this company had no back-up whatsoever, and this isn't their first MMO it seems

You know what, I'd have an easier time believing that scenario, because the other one is... wow, just wow...

Yeah, I also suspected a form of sabotage when I first read it. I mean no backup? Even my 10 year old brother backs-up his computer. But I haven't found anything to suggest that in other articles I found about it. Just unbelievable.

Yeah, when I saw that the game reportedly had a small playerbase I felt like it was more of a cop out. It's hard to believe that "professionals" could be so completely inept. Then again, nothing is too surprising anymore.
Four repeats of the same article in three weeks. Hmm.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

3. Warhammer Online (another unfinished game )
4. AoC (same as above)
I would say it was the decision to releae FFXIV long before it was ready.
Destroyed this games chances and put SE's repuation in the toilet.
SoE had 2 major screwup imo,
SWG
EQ2
EQ2 fragmented their whole playerbase. Was pretty interesting to see some people reunite in WoW after SoE split them up.
