Im not really sure who this "update" is targeted towards. Leveling has been easy mode ever since $oe took over with the exception of thier exp nerf 51+.
SoE took over before the game was ever even in release. So I'm not sure what other leveling mode you are referring to unless you are talking about beta.
$oe was only a co publisher when vg released in late january 2007. They didnt take over from sigil unitl may 2007.
Im not really sure who this "update" is targeted towards. Leveling has been easy mode ever since $oe took over with the exception of thier exp nerf 51+. The existing themepark training wheels with riftmasters directing you to the next quest hub wasnt easy enough? does it really need a "golden path" update lol?
Removal of corpse recovery? There was already a means to summon corpse if you died some place you couldnt retrieve your corpse, with but a moderate exp penalty. The penalty for actually recovering your tombstone was so light as to be comical.
Vanguard doesnt need faster, easier leveling, or under 51 content. It needs 51+ content, both for those that raid and even more importantly those that dont raid.
[Mod Edit]
i guess you missed the part about the big new dungeon for the 51+ crowd?

Im well aware of the addition of the city of brass dungeon as well as the included overland bosses. Please explain what that has to do with unneccesary changes to leveling speed and further erosion of an already weak death penalty. With as few resources allocated to this game over the last two years it really cant afford any wasted dev choices.
Removal of corpse recovery, experience curve decrease, increased loot drops, and this Golden Path all take away from Vanguard and what made it fun and unique... Now, there's a "strict" leveling path, items and levels come by more easily, and dying is a nuisance instead of a challenge.
This is the reason I probably will cancel my sub. I can see where this is going.

How much dev time do you think this stuff took vs the dungeon creation? Maybe 5-10%? If there areno new players there isno morenewcontent for VG, it doesnt take in enough money to support it as is.

Where do you get this information?
imo the only way this game is going to bring in new players is to do things that make it different from every other MMO in the last 10 years .. which is the opposite of what they are doing.
The reason this game has so few players has very little if nothing to do with loot drops, corpse runs, etc and everything to do with terrible decision making mostly before it was released.
In fact back before they nerfed the mechanics the first time, there were a lot of people playing this game. They left mostly because at reelase it was the buggiest MMO ever released. Probably still is the buggiest MMO ever released .. though they have done a good job fixing the bugs.
The decision to nerf this content really confuses me. It's just uneccesary .. and all but ensures there will never be another MMO for me to play .. I mean if the creators of EQ are nerfing the hell out of there games .. it's not likely anyone is going to make anything that is more challenging than staring at a wall.
LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity. I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already
After reading the forum post about the new update im excited for all of it, though I am curiuos about the death penalty change. I think they should invest in another server (doubtful that will happen soon) and have one for hardcore, one for casual. As for them planning on making the game F2P, I could see that, but I really hope they dont. I am still not holding my breath however.
Look's like to me they just put in the death patch. I played vanguard for a few weeks loved it for the god old death runs crafting and the mobs not being easy mode. Only quit was from the lack of players. Not to metion I hear the removed PVP servers after I quit and that's what I played on.
This patch is trash and I think it was put in to kill vanguard fully.
I could care less about the removal of corpse runs and faster leveling, it's enough for me that they're working on the game again. I've already resubscribed but I must say, I am a bit disappointed to see so few people running around. The last I heard, the population had taken an up-turn. I guess that has run it's course?
Still, I am having a blast. It's a welcome break from EQ2, and cheap with the station pass.

Yup they took the time and dev resources to add the first new content in years so that they could kill the game....they could have done that by having the janitor unplug the servers.
if this game does go f2p i will be back in the game so quick, not cos its free but because they are goin to be adding stuff to the game..i will sub...it will be worth it then..not to mention.all those peeps who want a challenge may flock to this game, given that its the only game that i know of that gives you a challenge.... i do luv this game.
TO me this sounds like they might be making the change to F2P look at EQ2 they changed the questing to it at the launch of F2P with a golden path added a few new things and bam F2P and now EQ2 will be totaly F2P on Live because of how well DCUO did. So Yeah I see it going that way the increase in players coming in to VG would be outstanding because it is such a diverse game with all the game mechanices it had from Flying Mouns to player built housing to the Diplomacy and Crafting it was amazing I quit do to not having a pc good enough to run it till it was dead. I do go back from time to time even tho I made the change to F2P my self after leaving this before and nothing out at the time drew me into pay and have been f2p sense.
This is some good news tho even tho it wont bring a ton of players back to it unless it does go F2P IMO. If it stays P2P it will get a few new players but not enough to keep it on Life support like it has been for the last 3 years or more.

I had a bad feeling when SOE turned it's eye to Vanguard. Dumbing the game down is going to ruin what makes it special. It's not an MMO with training wheels, that's why people like it you morons at SOE!

God every game SOE touches they turn to crap.
Yes, because Vanguard was remotely hardcore to begin with...
I'm not upset about the changes because Vanguard has much more to offer than a harsh death penalty and a lack of direction... Seriously, these aren't game features. If it helps the game get new players then I am all for it. It will not and should not fundamentally change the game... You still get a huge, interesting world, in depth crafting, diplomacy, and several playable races and classes

I find myself torn between loving and hating the new patch. What would have brought me back would have been more-harsh death penalties, reinstated "kill on site" towns, a harder leveling curve and a fix for all of the remaining issues as well as an adjustment to all of the stale animations. I know I don't get to decide so I leave myself with the thought that these changes could actually bring in more players, as some of the forum posts appear to state. Since one of my main complaints is that the is no one to play with, and this patch will bring players back, is it really all that bad . . . especially considering all the nerfing they've done thus far? Well, perhaps not. When it is all said and done I'm just turbo-stoked that the game is finally getting some love. Should it get more love, like FTP with a cash shop, I may find it impossible to stay away.

Exactly. I don't know why these challenge addicts think the game is going to lose the features that make it great by cutting the frustrating game mechanics off. Best parts of the game are still there and can now actually be seen by more people. Exploration, diverse classes and their whole leveling process and finding skills out in the world, diplomacy, mounts/flying mounts, TONS of dungeons, TONS of group quests still, I'm sure I'm missing more but it's early and my brain hurts.

As one of those former hardcore guys who wanted it all, I welcome these things, I loved vanguard at launch a ranger nerf and the fact I was starting a family ended my time in VG now the family are a little older and a bit more free time it will be nice to return to Telon and anything that make my limited playtime a more enjoyable experience then the better.
Will have to see if can find my CE discs although I'd probably be better off just installing via station.
I'm not sure how else your going to attract players to this game without upping the XP gain. The game is different from other MMOS, but if they were to see how slow the leveling is in this game compared to todays games, they wouldn't be sticking around because they don't feel they are making any progress
I agree it really pisses me off removing the death penalty,it's the start of dumbing down Vanguard. Having played since release and done all major top level content on 4 characters each level 55 this new content is a god send.
i think soe are using some poor strategy making the game easier and giving some updates trying to hold the few fellows subscribed cos swtor is just 1 month away and they will leave VG for sure
edit: note i said i think, as in opinion
Nah many will stay with Vanguard, swtor really is kiddy play compared to Vanguard.

There is only one reason SoE decided to start supporting this game after months and months without updates, they plan to transition Vanguard to F2P.

Pretty obvious its heading to F2P territory, with sudden interest in developing the game again and with both DCUO and EQ2 going F2P recently.

SOE feels that the vast majority of players don't want challenge, hence they have removed it from all their games.
It is all about money, SOE is not going to fund a game that is in, what is considered niche, for those that actually like a challenge in a game.
It is the Wow effect, dumb it down so everyone will want to play it.
