One of the few MMOs I'm somewhat excited about. I'm glad they are taking a more intelligent approach to questing. The standouts are this:

    - No Levels (Deep down, we all know skill based games are really better anyway...)

    - Persistent World PvP

    - 7 skills/passives at a time.

That right there is already a better approach than what we've been seeing lately. I get extremely tired of games handing me 50 abilities and saying "You know what, you need about 80% of these - some of them for PvE and others for PvP - so go hotkey every key on your keyboard and then start playing!" I mean at level 18 in Star Wars TOR I already had 23 of my 24 bottom rows filled with hotkeys ... and I still had 32 more levels to gain. Systems like this are far more appealing as it's about mixing and matching what works ... and not everyone will be the same. And although there will be builds favored over others, if the design is good enough, there will be many favored builds - each that have a weakness to something else.

I know everyone rips Funcom for AoC, but do remember that the same company made Anarchy Online way back in the early 2000's during the MMO infancy days. While it had a horrible launch, it was actually one of the larger and more innovative games on the market with a deep implant system and one of the first games to utilize mission/quest instancing on a small scale.

Anyway. Rip what you what and we always will have doubts about new MMOs, but for our sake I hope this game is good ... because something needs to be. Damn.

Sounds promising.  Hopefully, Funcom will let this bake in the oven until its ready.  Funcom really can't deny the fact that launching AoC when it did really hindered the game's overall potential.

From everything I learned on my trip, I would say that Funcom is a company that's actually learned from its mistakes and will make good on this one.

Maybe, their business model put me off though. Box buy - ok it is normal. Then they said they think about subscription in range of 15-17$. Ok 17 is a bit more than standard, but ok - after all kinda long since there was increase in sub fee.

But they plan to put cash shop on top of that, and expand it as game matures + they said they are happy with AoC experiences in that regard. They also plan to acquire additional 1/3 of sub revenue from cash shop/

    Double Dipping

Ok sorry that's not working for me.

    /passing on TSW

Great! I look forward to not seeing you there while I enjoy a game for its own merits and decide on my own if I want to spend any money in the cash shop or not! Obviously, for some, the simple fact there is a cash shop will mean they HAVE to spend money there, but those people don't concern me. If the game is good enough, I'll sink some money into the cash shop to show my appreciation to the devs, especially if it means I can have costume options (and other miscelaneous things like that) which other don't have. If not, I'll pay to play until I cease having fun and then I'll stop paying. Wow. So simple.

You're missing the whole point. The point isn't that the cash shop is only going to hold appearance items, it's not just going to be about cosmetics, it's going to be about useful skills. So you are A) Buying the box. B) Paying a MONTHLY SUB higher than any other monthly sub out for the genre, and then C) Having to pay MORE just to access /SKILLS/ which are the key component to character progression in this game.

That is what is wrong with this business model and that is what has totally crushed my hype for this game. I have followed this game for years, took part in ARG's, watched static and listened to sound bytes etc. It was a lot of fun to be involved in, but paying that much additional money on a high sub based game is just insulting.

Sorry Funcom, you lost another one here.

Love cash shops, how much can player X spend to be better than player Y. x+y = developer payday!

Not bad for a first post. I totally agree. In CCP's "Greed is good" newsletter, they basically outlined how in using this model would greatly profit from the competitive nature of players.

For some people money is not an issue. How I spend my money is my business and how you spend your money is your business.

If the game is done well enough and I am having fun I am not bothered by any business model they put in place.

Hmm. Interesting you say that. They failed with AO which was a amazing game with so many innovations. They then failed with AoC. They are 0 for 2. How is that learning.

First I'd like to say, AO was my fav mmorpg, played it for 4-6 years and it had a great population for most of that time till wow came along, sadly enough.

Ao i'd say was a success to do so well for so long when recent games are lucky to last 1 year.  Though i do admit it's launch was a bit rough.

Basically everything I read here was amazing... better than I thought it was currently... This is true innovation imo. GW2/TSW are pretty much the only things I'm looking forward too. I think TSW is higher than GW2 for me, but as TSW is further away it makes me sad.

TSW is probably closer, been in closed beta since May 2011, release scheduled for April 2012.  GW2 only entered closed beta towards the end of 2011, more likely to be released towards the end of 2012

This was my mosy highly anticipated game, but the box+sub+item shop killed it.

I won't even give this game a second look now.

Item shops have no place in sub based games IMO.  The developers spend more time making cool stuff to put in the item shop while the sub players are left to languish or shell out more of their hard earned money for items that should be in the game already.

No thanks Funcom.  You lost a customer.

the shop is just for cosmetic clothing, nothing that gives you an advantage

WOW has sub + box + cash shop
