I have the exact same specs, except I have a better mother-board, and I run it on ultra with no FPS problems at all, smoothly running around 60fps or so.
I'm in full beta. I can vouch.
EDIT: My Mother-board is only slightly better. It's a step or two up. Not much of a difference.
I was in the same boat as you two weeks ago. I can say the 2500k is the most bang for your buck. I have gotten it to 4.8 with just air cooling with no problem. I went with a 560 TI 1 gb, Asus p8z68 v pro, 8 gb ram. I am currently playing rift and can run it on ultra while averaging 62 fps. Can not wait to try it out on TOR this weekend. But the i5 2500k is a awesome choice.
It still runs Skyrim reasonable at Ultra settings.
When upgrading my system (Mainboard, mem, CPU, graphics), all depending on my chrismass bonus, will it be wise to invest in an SSD for the game install?

The processor would be a substantial upgrade, but really only make a difference in games that are unusually processor-intensive. If Thuban isn't fast enough to run a game properly, then that's targeting a very, very narrow playerbase, as Sandy Bridge quad core desktops would be about the only thing that are fast enough. Either that or it would be a badly coded game that doesn't run well on anything.
Don't do the video card replacement, though. That would be spending $348 for a card that is only maybe 20% faster than what you already have in an average game. If a Radeon HD 5870 isn't fast enough for you, then that's what CrossFire is for. And again, if a 5870 isn't fast enough for the game, then very few (if any) people will have a card that is.
Besides, there usually isn't much to be gained by switching from a high end card of one generation to another high end card of the same generation. The only reason a GeForce GTX 570 is any newer than a Radeon HD 5870 is that Fermi was so ridiculously delayed. AMD's next generation of video cards should launch early next year, and that might be fast enough to be a worthwhile upgrade.
I ran the Beta 2 weekends ago with 100+ frames. I forced AA in the control panel and it still ran at 40-60 FPS.
I would not go with a 570, it's not worth the extra cost for a few more FPS. A slightly overclocked 560 Ti is as fast a as a 570 and can even outperform it.
Definately best bang for the buck. The abve PC cost me 900 EURO.

Building a new system for a certain game is never simple, as the system needs to last for a longer time, luckilly i only plan to play SW:TOR and GW2 for the years to come. With that in mind i need some information about both games...
how do they handle multi threading..
Are the games CPU or GPU intensive..
how is their memmory handling..
Will there be a lot of background/forground loading from theHD... (SSD game install)..
Do they favor Nvidia or AMD graphics..
To what benchmark games do they compare..
Only with this information, i'll be able to build an optimal system, inside my current budget. Yes thats right, everything needs to fit intoo a budget.
Can anyone answer these questions for SW:TOR ?

Kept my old ATI 5770 for when the new ones are released
But Finally I bought myself a 256GB SSD which I reccomend you get instead of the crap you don't need, it will make a much more significant difference on its own than buy what you suggested.

@OP Did you mention system RAM? If it isn't already, and you actively want to spend cash, look into maxing it out to the motherboards capacity. Modern software is bloated and Windows loves ram. No doubt TOR will be very heavy on artwork. The more room the better.
Just my 2 cents on it.

Well i class my rig as medicore she's gotta AMD X2 64 bit 245 proc, with a 5770 older card 4 gig of memory, and i was running as smooth as butter at 1920X1080 on high settings.
There does not seem to be a need for a really high spec as Bio seem to be aiming at the mass market and the Hero Engine does not seem to be really challanged, but as this was beta it will no doubt change as they up the graphics and implement further changes but like i said i don't think this will push a decent rig at all.
And your current rig blows mine out of the water i was gonna buy a Bulldozer to play Skyrim but currently playing as an example for Skyrim on 16 Anistropic filtering same res as SWTOR full SSAO, but no AA and 30 mods running with full HD textures and to my amazement it's running like a dream so your first rig should be sufficient if i can run Skyrim/SWTOR on my cranky beast.
Entirely for SW:TOR, what would give me more FPS? A single Nvidia 580 or an Intel i5 2500k seeing as MMOs are usually processor intensive?
Tbh, unless you want to upgrade for the sake of upgrading, you wont need to touch your current PC. You can easily run SWTOR on the highest settings most likely. For reference, I have a Phenom x4 955, 4 gb ddr3 ram, and a ATI 5870 and I had everything cranked up to the max and was still at vsync most of the time.
SWTOR is not a graphically demanding game in the least. It was made, much like WoW, to run on almost any computer over the past five years. Not saying the graphics are bad, just not very demanding.

I agree with the video card upgrade, but doubt you would see a stunning difference in performance processor wise.
Are you currently overclocking the CPU? It might be more reasonable/cost effective boost.

I don't really mess with overclocking because I don't really understand it and don't want to blow up my PC
The op's current rig is more then enough for swtor. Upgrade the cpu for gw2 instead next year.
How will my current system do in SWTOR?
-C2D 2.4 Ghz
-Nvidia 8800GTS 640
-4GB of mem...
It still runs Skyrim reasonable at Ultra settings.

If you can run Skyrim on Ultra, you'll be fine running SWToR.
This machine will do the job in a high performance?

the OP does not need to upgrade for SWTOR. SWTOR needs to upgrade to him.
eh, possible driver issues aside, beta would indicate otherwise. Looking forward to this weekend's beta test to compare performance.

I upgraded my system a little,
I went from an X3 720 BE to an X4 965 BE,
from an M4a78 TE to an M5A99x EVO,
8GBs of DDR3 ram
Kept my old ATI 5770 for when the new ones are released

why is it everything a new mmo comes out someone with an already great system must want to make a newer system for a game.
thats a good rig right there that will play any current mmo or game pretty well.
tell you what take that money and buy a good handbag for your lady and put the remaining money in the bank in this time of un certainty.
much better investment!
ps used to b like that myself ,build new rig for swg build new rig for eq2.ah the waste when i think back.
upgrade when you really need to.
Well if you keep your pc updated you can still sell components on marktplaats/Ebay and stuff liek that and get some money back.
If you dont do this your components will be ready for the trashcan !!!
myself got a I920 Xtreme with dual Ati cards in it with 8 gig ram, but i wont upgrade for SW, think i can run it smooth.
If not then i might think about a new upgrade.
You dont need any upgrades, at all. Except, if you want to play the newest shooters, ofc

ah, yeah....you didn't mention how much memory you have. That would be my first suspicion if you are having performance issues with that rig.
Also....in SWTOR's video options, try this:
Disable "Windowed Mode" and "Fullscreen Exclusive Mode", turn V-Synch on, exit game, and reboot.
This is something that we full time testers have been doing for several builds, and seems to make a MASSIVE difference in performance.
I have like 8G of RAM, on a 1.5 yr old PC, thus a simple upgrade of a video card should give me pretty good performance.
It wont be cutting edge, but more than enough to get the job done since the game isnt trying for top of the line GFX.
Asking Devs to make AAA sandbox titles is like trying to get fine dining on a McDonalds dollar menu budget.
the GTX560 Ti 1gb demolishes this game, and you can grab one for under $200 if you do some shopping around.
