Lack of grind =/= a western MMO. There are still many elements in TERA that make it Korean. TERA is Aion 2.0 and will do no better then it's predecessor.
Most of the games I play have bone crushing grind, that's not a reason to release or not release. This is not Aion 2.0 I play Aion, the graphics are not 3D Anime in nature. They are pretty and asthetic, so is FF14 graphics. They aren't Anime. Most of the murals on here that sell games are.
They also sell on several other points, the crosshair combat as an example, the sandbox, the storyline and there is an unavoidable possibility it will fail. I'm not pretending it's the best thing since sliced bread but it brings a new dimension that "up's the game' and I want to see it with as much eye candy as it can handle.
260K in a country of 48 mill works out purley from a percentage to around 6 million subs from EU and NA. The trouble with MMOs and this one particular, they wont be bringing new subs to the MMO pool so if they get even 2 million subs from NA and EU they will be stolen subs. The fact that the game was attacked for its Anime elements when compareable elements are in many other games that never got attacked says this is a debranding attempt.
The debranding of Anime gaming from Tera has yet to be mentioned by any of the replies, hence derailment and trolling? Lots of jimmy, jerry, cherry picking but nobody has touched the OP aspect or title of the thread.
How has anyone debranded Anime other than the 12 year old girls with miniskirts? I remember people equally "debranded" aion for its absurd weapons. Can you show me how people have debranded or attacked the anime or art style of this game? I've actually seen a lot of posts that say the game looks good but the rest is just traditional korean game design.
Also, many American's like PB&J. So, lets assume 25% of America likes PB&J. That means 75,000,000 in the US like it. By those numbers there should be 182,000,000 in europe that like it and 334,000,000 in China. But hey, guess what? PB&J is really only popular in the USA and maybe parts of Europe. But by your logic we should all those people liking it.
Just because something is popular in one country doesnt mean the same thing will apply to a different country, much less a different culture.

Last I checked the only thing people were having issues with were the "over-sexualized" little girl race. No other part of the game is being "censored" (people bitch about the armor of both men and women in that game but no more than any other game with revealing armor). Claiming that the sole reason for your argument of debranding is over-sensationalizing the issue and if anything detracts from all the other parts of the game, all of which are very "anime", that people are perfectly fine with if not flat out love.
That's like saying the whole purpose of TERA is the loli race and without their naked ass in the camera, the game is worthless. It's a ridiculous notion.
I gave examples of Poporis and Elin in other games that didnt get the hypersensational negativity this game got.
If Tera is sold as the western introduction to Anime gaming, they will get subs. They will pull them from every game in the MMO market. The Elim were removed from the western game. Pick up the fanpage pack, nothing is in there for Elim. I don't care, they can be intergrtated back in with a future exapnsion as a dryad type race. I just want it to be seen that this game is not "pedo", if it is, so are alot of the adverts on this site, so are alot of elements of other games we accept. Neither is the case and neither is Tera. It should keep its Anime aspect because what makes people buy video games? Eye candy. - Proof- "WoW sucks"
Tera, the first western Anime MMO.
I'm thinking thats a pretty damn good brand.
You compared Poporis to a Star Wars race that has existed for a very long time and has absolutely nothing to do with little girls. You compared Elin to Lalafell which, while child-like, aren't walking around half-naked. You're comparing apples to oranges trying to draw similarities where they don't exist and only making your point that much more far-fetched.
And once again, that TERA would be the first "Western Anime MMO" does not hinge on naked Lolis. There is a lot more to TERA's art style and direction than Elin, especially considering they're not even being removed. They're giving the little buggers stockings, that's pretty much it. Big deal. If you honestly feel that everything about TERA is ruined because of that, you're off on a tangent I don't quite get.
For the record, I was one of the neutral parties in this. I didn't mind the Elin one way or another, and definitely felt like the whole controversy was blown out of proportion. But by the same token if I play TERA and waste hours on a game I could be spending countless other more productive ways, it's going to be because the game is that good. Not because someone was shaking their pre-pubescent ass in my face. That people are raging so hard over something that's so insignificant is ridiculous, especially considering the reigning argument is that "it's not real and so it's not a big deal," which by that same argument would mean it doesn't matter either which way.
Is it the Elin specifically that bother you, or that any amount of censorship should be allowed? The prior argument is silly, but I can understand the latter a bit more. Culturally however, we are all pretty different from each other and that's not going to change because of a video game. At least not over night. You'd be better off picking your battles better and putting your energies towards something not already a dead horse.
EDIT - in reply to your above post to someone else:
They're not being removed, their outfits are being altered. And no part of that person's post was a flame. For God's sake, trying to get something removed/changed because you didn't like what was said. Ironic considering that is exactly the issue you're having with this game.

TERAs graphics are not something I could consider "3D Anime" either. It's more of a stylised Korean artwork. Blade and Soul looks more animeic IMO by a lot. Also, the combat is all this game has going for it, beyond that, it is no different the any other MMO with lack of content. The Sandbox? Where? This isn't a sandbox game. This is the most On Rail MMO that I have ever played. Go here, quest to next hub, quest to next hub, quest to next hub, do repeatables, do dungeon, go to next hub, quest to next hub and so on. That's not sandbox. And finally the storyline ... who is going to care about that? 90% of the playerbase is going to skip it cause it's boring and a waste of time. If they were going to play an MMO for story then they would play SWTOR.

My original comparisons stand. I don't see any difference between them.
I still feel I am right about the defamation of the Tera brand for all the wrong reasons but if you must know, the gravity of the attack is what made me mad. It had to be defended. I just started seeing stuff about this game 3 days ago and over half it is very damaging attacks based on things that aren't there.
Elin don't look child like but I read the Elin lore page. They are a nature race, hence Dryad. I never asked 20 people to come here and wage war with me because I saw a need to defend this game but bring it. I'm still standing behind my convictions.
- Need to check out Blade and Soul before I can comment on that.

I wouldn't call it waging war, we are just pointing out the flaws on your side of the argument. Like claiming that TERA is in anyway a western MMO.
While some people are up in arms over video game characters present in a Teen rated game, some walmart is selling thong underwear in the kid's clothing section and REAL girls are being brainwashed by the media to adhere to the size 0 standard.
I'm thrilled to see that we in North America have got our priorities straight, as usual.

If you ever played Lineage 2, it's basically the same thing. They don't have sieges yet but they will add them after they add Server VS Server politics/invasions & territorial control for areas that are SHARED for all the servers.
KR Tera is basically an incomplete game, and En Masse knows it, why do you think we aren't playing Tera right now?
"Esport with tournaments is for hardcore pvp'rs that want to be competitive. Openworld PVP with ganking and griefing is for casuals that just wants their pvp mixed with pve from time to time." otacu
Edit: Also, tera is only a threat to Aion in my opinion.
Those steryotypes are generally believed to be true because thats the style seen in many eastern games.
If you live in a trailer, your likely called trailer trash because many people who live in trailers are trashy.
Thats how sterotypes are formed.
Zing!
You are correct, there is a foundation to racism. Racists think they are better than everyone else and they tend to be the loudest. Back to the debranding of Tera, no mentions so far of that.
no. that's elitism not racism.
racists think other races are inferior.
thinking about yourself in a way or another is not racism. its elitism or narcissim if anything.
It still doesn't change the fact that people aren't trying to censor the content but the brand as shown with the examples but on with your side care bob debate,
Show me racism that doesnt involve elitism and I might see what your point is.
I don't get your point here. Are you trying to say you want people to censor the content? Who cares about the brand. If I go out to buy bread I buy bread weither its wonder bread , or some other brand is strictly second thought. So if the games good it will be good who gives a damn about the "Brand" you seem so centered on. The numbers you pointed out for Korea really aren't very good if you consider how highly involved with vidoe games most Koreans are. America may have Baseball as its national sport, Korea has Starcraft as thiers.
What are you people talking about? The Elin is still in the game, I played one during the EU alpha last month. The only change they made was to give them shorts instead of panties.... Stop spreading non-sense rumors when you actually have no fucking idea what you're talking about.
"There is no Elim in the Western fanpack"
Or do you like being reported for flaming?
You don't actually believe that.... do you?

So you felt the need to post about the pointless things being added to the game that will give no depth to most of the people who play? Well, let's go on the fact that the political system has been abused to the point of making it a joke in KTera where only having one territory is worth having and everyone else has just wasted money. Server vs Server and Invasions have not even been talked about to any extend and we have no idea what they even are. For all we know they are nothing more then a large instance that is cross server.
So yeah, nice job bringing up an exploitable feature and a feature with no detail whatsoever that has no release date at all. Also, I am well aware of KTERA not being finished but they are taking a over whole year to even make it playable for us. So, guess how long it will take to get basic content? Enjoy paying 15 a month for a game and waiting a year to get a few dungeons.

By the time Tera gets to North America it wont be Tera because it will have been debranded and the reason will be enmass let them. If this game did well in Japan and Korea, it will do well here and for the very same reasons. Racist bullshit about how eastern gamers have this otherworldy perspective on games is an old and unfounded stereotype enforced by stigma and misinformation, Just like everyone hates WoW and yet everyone plays it.
They are debranding Tera because its a threat. It's a cronyism and your going to lose if you don't hold your brand, EME, save your redevelopment money for a small squad of Lawyers and sell YOUR game, not some watered down version.
What exactly do you think they watered down? From what I understand we will be able to owpvp sooner than you can in the korean versoin, so you cannot be talking about that. They have changed a few of the armor renders for the elins (last i saw it was like 6 armor sets that are getting changed) but i would hardly call that debranding.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
I thought Aion would replace my void of Dark Age of Camelot when it came out. It came close, except for all the horrible game mechanics and bugs / server latency at launch. Tera does look like a great game, but then so do a lot of other MMO's. ArcheAge is another eastern MMO that looks quite promising. Problem is, easterners don't like the same type of gameplay as westerners do. As in, they don't like questing, but rather grinding on mobs for hours and hours. Then you have westerners who prefer faster leveling through questing to enjoy the end-game. All of the eastern games I've played so far, FFXI, FFXIV, Aion and others. The longest I've played them was for 3 months and that was Aion. I've played EQ for 5+ years, DAoC for 4+ years, SWG for 4+ years, WoW for 4+ years and LOTRO for 3+ years. I'm just one person, but for me, it's quite obvious, theres significant differences between eastern and western games.
Fear not, i played K Tera at launch and i was able to lvl up to 50 with quests alone.
While it got really group based at around lvl 25, the western version will be watered down in that aspect (too many solo players in the west ).
Archeage is also said to have full questing for the people who would rather do quests instead of explore new areas with your clan, find open world bosses, hunt X mob for X craft or PVP for the best xp spots.
It's funny because in Lineage 2, an MMO with almost no quests, it didn't felt a grind for the first 60 levels because i was playing the game instead of trying to lvl up.
Party PVP at Cruma Tower, Hunting Grounds clan wars..., pvp for the best spots, etc. Back to Archeage,it even has BGs for the players who hate Open World PVP.
As for B&S, well, there are quests up to lvl 15-20 but after i that i simply don't know.
Even Aion has enough quests now, not that it was THAT bad, the grind was overrated IMO.

Really?
Every time i hear people talking about Tera, i always hear the same... Combat and Politics.
Believe it or not, some people DO want MMOS where not everyone is a special snowflake, where some have unique content, it gives a reason to play, something to look forward.
And new updates will give more and more incentives, we already have too many MMOS where everyone is the same.

3 days of reading about this game and all I see are talks of censoring it because of crap not there, as I have pointed out several times already. I'm not even sure why the Elin thing provoked me the way it did, I wont play one. I always play human.
You know what's interesting though, I watched this forum for a few days and nobody posts. Suddenly they are coming out of the wood work and mostly to argue so I guess we know how much stock to put in a forum, as par.
The trolls get to us all every now and then. Looking forward to Tera.

I didn't quit Aion cause of the lack of quests or content, but rather the fact PvP was horrible due to latency issues with large battles. I'm sure it's improved, but so much as changed since Aion first came out, such as a lot of my favorite games going F2P. It's coming to the point that P2P for me has had it's chance to survive. Yes, I pre-ordered SWTOR and it's P2P, but it is my last ditch effort to hope the newest AAA title can keep me interested like EQ, SWG or DAoC did.
No.... they are still unplayable crap.
I left a year ago, great mmo, probably the best themepark i have ever played ... but it wasn't for me.
12 attempts... no HHoM.

Aion hasn't improved. There is a memory issue with instance changing. If you switch between 2 or more areas the game locks up. I'm sure they will figure it out.
My over enthusiastic fascination with Tera is because I want to mess around with Vid cap movies. The whole game play thing is just too easy and this one has graphics that might make it a very eventfull year of gaming. I really hope they don't slash and burn the animations beyond what they have already.
As someone who has seen the race in question here. It makes me skiddish. In fact it grosses me out a bit.
However, I hate censorship. And I realize I have to take what I consider bad with the good. IMO there should just be an option, so you can play original TERA or have the textures replaced if it suites you.
The real issue here is that EME wants a teen rating. Also whoever said the race is being removed doesn't have a clue...

It's not true the EME did it for a teen rating. TERA is still considered a Mature rated game and all the other races skimpy outfits (some which are far worse) remain untouched.

Thought I read the community manager on the TERA forums say they were. If not, my mistake.

It might be true that is what they are claiming they are doing it for now since I stopped keeping up with the game for around a month now. Though sources has given 3 different reasons for the change and EME has been flip flopping the reason for this issue cause EME's communication with the fanbase is pretty bad when issues come up.

Nobody said the Elim were being removed, they were taken out of the Fanpack. All the little Robert Shapiro wannabes ran with that and tried to spin it in to something else.
If they want a Teen rating, they will need to murder all the races as they are seen in the Eastern version. Putting shorts on the Elim wont get them thier teen rating.

Because something does well in Asia it will do well in the western market if a false premise. There are some fundamental differences culturally and socially between the two spheres. Kimchi is loved in Korea, but not America (for the most part). Certain movies do better over here or over there. Shogun was a big hit here, no so much in Japan. Hell there are differences in attitude between NA and Europe. Can anyone remember Hasseloff and his popularity in Germany or the fanatical devotion the french have with Jerry Lewis. The same goes with gaming. Somethings they really like and somethings we really like. They are not necessarily the same thing. I'll give one example that I can think of. Asians seem to love cutsie races. In the west, thats not such a turn on.

They aren't being racist, they are target marketing. When a company markets into an area, they have to ensure they target the masses, or as much as they can. I will say, in this case...you aren't targeting your family type of group...I don't really feel that changes based on culture need to occur.

wow people over reacting much? To be honest i think Tera will do very well with its new combat system (finally a mmorpg that takes skills rather than who have best gear and can press buttom the fastest....), great graphics (i'll say it flat i hate western game graphics, yes i know they trying ot make it realistic in some way but i can't stand looking at all these ugly people i just can't), and its not a grind fest which is probbly the reason its not doing so well in asia.
I'm from asia myself soi know that over there we like it to be hard to make it to it top, that it take lot of work and effort to reach there and not everyone can hence you have the endless grinding that split the hardecore game and casual gamer. What i learn here in the US is that people want things w/o working for them, its simple fact, why people want to be able to quest their way to cap in what? 2 weeks? why? why would you want to get to the game so fast? because people don't want to work for it simple as that. There lot more casual gamer in western side that don't want to or can't but still want the end game content really really fast ( coz people can't wait). But its how communty are different and why game change base on its user.
I'm happy that Tera is comming out though finnally a p2p mmorpg that doesn't look like total crap... (i had my time with f2p game, wayyyyy more expansive) i think WoW, aion, and rift should be scared lol
Also STWOR is like an over glorfied single player game, sure the story is nice but everything else is just a WoW ripe off in starwar form. Only reason it sell is is the star war name. If i want story i rather play dragon nest, its free and story is good, first game where i read all my quest dialog coz they are worth reading. and say something like but STWOR has voice dialog...seriously stop been so lazy and read.... ok end rage mode.

Guess Tera qualifies for WOW clone title by using same logic.. yes it has new combat system, poilitics and such but at heart it is following classic themepark model. i played in korean beta and except for combat it couldn't keep me interested for long. Also, when Tera is not doing that well in its own home country i doubt it will break any records in west.

"Forums aren't for intelligent discussion; they're for blow-hards with unwavering opinions."

I don't get your point here. Are you trying to say you want people to censor the content? Who cares about the brand. If I go out to buy bread I buy bread weither its wonder bread , or some other brand is strictly second thought. So if the games good it will be good who gives a damn about the "Brand" you seem so centered on. The numbers you pointed out for Korea really aren't very good if you consider how highly involved with vidoe games most Koreans are. America may have Baseball as its national sport, Korea has Starcraft as thiers.

Back to Archeage,it even has BGs for the players who hate Open World PVP.
Even Aion has enough quests now, not that it was THAT bad, the grind was overrated IMO.
