if you enjoy PvE it is an incredible game, best free to play arround, IMHO.
if you like PvP there is the hardcore server, but I never tried it so can't say.
one thing I'd like to point is that the game mechanics look weird in the start, but when you get the gameplay right the fun just skyrocket!
I know it is 25 GB+, but you should try anyway... you can start playing free if you want anyone of the 4 starter free classes, or buy the class you want if it is not one of then, but once you reach lvl 80 you should consider paying the montly fee.
until level 80, free to play is almost the same as pay to play.

Why is it recommended I sub at 80? thanks for the advice, gonna download it now.
I'll chime in on your above question first. If you wish to play the end game; raids etc.... you'll need to sub as those aren't avalible to the F2p players. Although up until recently the low level dungeons weren't either and now they are so who knows what the future holds.
Is it fun to play? YES and no. Once you get everything set right it's an amazing looking game and has one of the best turtorial's (with VO) around. It's not just a button masher but makes you think about where your target is blocking and where to hit him at (hint - not where he's blocking! LOL!).
The story lines are fun and well written without being low winded. You can answer all sweety pie or be down right rude and will get some different results from it. I found this was one of the few games I actually enjoyed talking to the NPC quest givers.
It's also one of the few games (I think) that when it say's for mature audiences it means it. From the dialoge to the fatalities it pushes the envelope.
Also on the tutorial island each/most of the professions has it's own version of the storyliine - fighter is a different view of the story, same for ranger, I think all the MU's use the same story but as I don't play them couldn't say for sure.
Now to the no part - If you're really hung up on playing X nation and leveling inside that nation (I was and went with Stgyian) you'll quickly finish all that nations quests and end up having to level in the other nations area's to get to the max F2p level. I didn't want to play in the snow and ice and disliked having to. The Greek/Roman area wasn't so bad but no Cim land for me!
Other than that, you'll find the normal F2p restrictions but I never saw any as a big game breaker. I don't like not being able to mail items, but can live with it.
While there are just a few servers now, picking the right one is important.

I just started as well....what server do you suggest?
Nicely written post, Nebless. When AoC was originally released I was intrigued by the combat system but put off by what some stated as the linear game-play. Over the years, it would appear that AoC has transformed itself into a solid PvE title with interesting mechanics (PvP players got it in the shorts - hence why if I wanted to play PvP, I'd stick with a title where PvP was built into the game from the ground up).
I was toying with the idea of coming back to MMORPGs from my sabbatical (Ryzom for 2 weeks a year ago, and LoTRO for 3/4 months 2 years ago) to play SW:TOR. A number of factors have caused me to halt:
Upgrade Pc or month long trip to SE Asia (flying on A380 early next year) - SE Asia won by a country-mile
SW:TOR gameplay
As an old EQ player back in the day, I do prefer open-worlds with many different paths to the same objective. I also want a degree of innovation and involvement in key aspects of the game - notably combat. Hence, why I am now pondering on whether I will go SW:TOR next Spring, or whether I will choose another title. At the moment, I'm leaning towards the latter option [another title] and want combat to be a little more involving - even if my twitch skills (never that good) have atrophied.
From reading a lot of the newer threads in the AoC forum, the game is receiving a lot of love from PvE fans.
"If you think I'm plucky and scrappy and all I need is love, you're in way over your head. I don't have a heart of gold or get nice. There are a lot nicer people coming up. We call them losers."

PVE
Hardcore RP - then go for Wic, middle of the road Tyr server
PVP
Probably Cim as it's the official PVP-RP server. If you do any PVP then guild up, otherwise you're just fresh meat for the gankers that will one shot you for (their) fun.
Riotgirl:
Yea the PVPer's are still getting the short end of the stick. Funcom might as well just come out and say as LotRO does "This is a PVE game. Any PVP you experience is just an after thought and unintentional".
Like most if not all mmos, the game is really fun to play if you can find a group to play with.
Been playing AoC on and off since launch. I feel it's one of the better mmos. Its shortcomings are actually the same shortcomings of every mmo in the market.
Haven't played it much in the last month since I've been doing testing for SW:TOR.
I'll say TOR is a decent game, but I missed the gritty real graphics of Conan. I then thought about the end game grind in Conan, that then lead me to think about how in the world can TOR be any different in the end game.
what I'm getting at is, don't necessarily believe the negative hype. The game launched extremely early and it paid the price. Most people who bash the game, their only memories are from when it was launched. It's a decent game, it's neither ground breaking than most mmos and it certain isn't the worst.

Try the Herald Of Xotli class.....challenging, but a lot of fun.
AoC can be a blast. I havn't tried it since a couple months after the Godslayer expansion, but had a great time then.
