There are similarities of course but SW will be the wow killer and this is why.
!. Story- Sw has just a fantastic story and the fact that you interact with the npc and the story plays out throughout the game is great, the acting is very good and when you play out a story like that you feel more immersed in the game play, I rate it a 10.
Wow story 6- actually not to bad but it plays out like episodes insstead of a compleate story line.
Lotro 8- People praise Lotro for its lore and story line and well they should but it gets marked down because of so many kill 10 boars and bears quests, I swear I have never seen so many boars and bears on a planet before.
2. Atmosphere and immersion- Sw has fair atmosphere with alot of overly big rocks and bland tunnells , there is no day and night cycle which hurts and the colors could be better that said the opening movie is spectacular and the cut scenes are of great quality and they certainly help with immersion-I rate it a 7
Wow 7- Wows smooth game play and improved graphics and recent cut scenes certainly help it to be atmospheric and immeersive, the 2 new races with their starting play are a cut above
Lotro 10- the most atmospheric and immersive game made today, when night comes and you look up into the sky you see stars twinkling above and everything about Lotro screams great atmosphere-fantastic.
3. Combat- Sw has both fluid and immersive combat, it really looks like you are hitting someone, it is not like AOC of course but for what it does it is excellent and fun , each race different from the other in combat I rate it a 9.
Wow- 7 - Smooth , fluid, no hitching or lag, it is only hurt by its dated graphics but other wise quite good.
Lotro- 5 The bit of Lag you get as you press your icon is an immersion killer, besides that it is a relaxing combat, but the Ai is way to easy to beat (the same with wow) not bad combat but needs to be improved.
4. Graphics- Sw- 6 characters look a little bloated or distorted and colors are a bit bland,
Wow-7 Vibrant colors , silghtly less cartoonish than in the past
Lotro- 9 characters a bit funny looking but the rest is magical
5.- Quests- SW-10 If you follow the story the quests have a logical and exciting feel to them, this is not a skip through the dialogue and lets see how fast I can get to end game, this is relish every quest and become part of the Star Wars Universe
Wow- 6 actually not to bad, the 2 new races have better quests than the rest but of course that is only up to lvl 20, it is possible to read wow quest and enjoy then quite a bit but most people do not, that being said they are episode quests and not full story lines.
Lotro-6 Just to many boar and bear quests which is a shame because the main story line is a 9 , but they became lazy and just did not work on the side quests
that is as far as i can go as I did not experience crafting or space or PvP, but what I did see tells me that if you enjoyed Kotar and Mass effect 1 and 2 than you will greatly enjoy Star Wars, drop your swords and plow shears, Let the flood gates open THE WOW KILLER IS FINALLY HERE
Comments
You shouldn't have used the phrase "wow killer" in the opening sentence. I couldn't really justfiy the effort of reading anything beyond that.
*edit* I went ahead and read it anyway. I hope SWTOR is everything you ever dreamed of! I'm sure it will kill WoW for those who unsub to play SWTOR, but not on a larger scale.
"TO MICHAEL!"
Interesting to see LOTRO mentioned in there, used to love that game, only one to keep my attention besides WoW.
A note on quests and storyline, although i know it is a very large part of TOR and being a huge fan of the original KOTOR i had been dissapointed they hadn't just made a KOTOR 3 instead. However whilst this is a great new feature for an MMO is it what the masses will want? I see its highly praised here but everyone knows forum posters and viewers hardly represent the majority, and what ive noticed in games is that many players want to just "go go go" through the content and get to max level where the "game starts".
Hmmmm...... According to your scores, LotRO was a "WoW killer" as well.
Apparently, hindsight is not 20/20.
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
I don't believe anything will kill WOW other than Blizzard and I am not even a WOW player anymore. I DO think TOR is the game for me for a while. I usually have two MMOs going so I can't wait for GW2 and Secret World to fill that void. The MMOs out now are not doing it for me now that I have played TOR.
I like the comparison to LOTRO. I do believe it is an immersive world and good game. I played it for over a year but then for some reason lost interest. I have tried to go back but no luck.
Nothing is going to "kill WoW" aside from WoW. 4 million subs lost over the last year. Yeah I don't think SWTOR has anything to do with that. If anything it was the last expansion. Rift might have taken some of those Subs. You gunna call Rift a WoW killer too?
My theme song.
the problem is that people are so used to crappy quests and no voice overs, so they just started clicking Accept and following the arrow, with vanilla Wow you did not have that nice arrow so you had to read the quests
It just goes to show that graphics will not make a mmo a success, Look at wow's super cartoony graphics when it was vanilla wow, it did not hurt their success or runescape crappy graphics . I along with many people love Lotros graphics but do not like their combat and boars and bears, not to mention their bad PvP play
I wish writing "wow killer" banned you from the site permanently.
Rawr.
alot of people have just gotten sick of wow and MMO's in general, some people have quit wow and are getting ready to play Star wars and Guild Wars 2
The op has no idea what he is talking about and is an idiot, you cannot compare Wow to anything because wow is incomparable. Wow is here now and will be here forever!!!!
I'm not sure if you can edit your title, but if you can, I would remove the 'WoW killer' The community is naturally going to look at that shiny and ignore everything else around them. Thus your analysis or the different games is lost (I'm assuming all that wring is supposed to be the star of the thread not the title. Although the title will definitely get you bodies in the door.)
I self identify as a monkey.
I guess you genuinely believe that TOR will "kill" WoW. I guess you're dreaming. TOR has nowhere near the content of WoW, it will get old fast and WoW won't look all that bad again. Killing something the size of WoW is something I would not like to task anyone with. Let WoW die of old age.
I loved LOTRO online but the OP is being ridiculous and totally out of touch with the majority out there outside of these forums who would give the story of SWTOR such low marks. Absurd. I also loved the artistry of LOTRO, but I don't think it is superior to SWTOR. I also hated how sticky the combat felt in LOTRO and SWTOR is NO WHERE EVEN CLOSE to that feel.LOTRO suffered from the same issues that most MMOs suffer from. Most people were clicking accept without reading the quests. For the first 20 levels, there are so many trivial quests that have absolutely nothing at all to do with Lord of the RIngs.
ANother thing the OP left out is many left the game because they felt the classes were boring, or they introduced classes that have nothing to do with the that world (e.g. Runekeeper). I never really found a class that appealed to me. A hunter wasn't bad, similar to a mage in WOW, but I wanted magic not arrows lol. I enjoyed my time one run through, but I could never see myself going through the same path again in a world with only one side, the good side, coupled with limited PVP options nowhere close to the scale that SWTOR will offer..
Comon, graphics worse than WOW? get real. No credibility here.
There Is Always Hope!
While this game is fun to play, there is no way it is going to displace WoW. At best, it will be a contributing factor to WoW's gradual declime. While I'm having fun in beta, I won't be buying it on release. To me, it feels like a multiplayer adventure game. I'd play after release if it was f2p, but I'm not subscribing. Maybe it will go f2p sometime next year after the player base declines.
I expect it ti keep many players for the first 6 months and then decline to a niche game for Star Wars fans as newer games are released. I've been playing online multiplayer 3D games for over 12 years and have seen many games both good and bad come and go. There have been very few games where the post release performance have come close to the pre-release hype.
LOTRO did not kill WoW for a few obvious reasons.
- combat is slower and people don't care for that in games
- graphics required a MUCH better rig, and many people just didn't want to spend that
- by the time LOTRO really spun-up, WoW was already firmly established and many people still liked WoW and cared enough about the time invested that they simply didn't want to leave
- by the same token as the above .. everyone seemed to be playing WoW and few people wanted to leave their friends behind to join what the majority of critical reviews stated was a superior game
As for comments on Boars and Bears .. if you seriously think LOTRO has more ridiculous kill and collet quest than WoW you have lost it. That is the biggest turn off in WoW for me .. the constant drudgery of go kill 10 'xyzs', go back to same camp and kill these other 'xyzs' than you have to rekill the first group to get to and blah blah blah. They only difference is that in LOTRO they didn't created as many types of creatures to go kill and instead kept it within reason.
Or, as Cartman would say .. all we have to do is kill a few millions more wolves and we will be at max level.
Blizzard got so many things right when WoW launched. They learned that a good quest log and system (instead of having to maintain a pencil and paper list) is what peope wanted. Apparently be told every step is more accepted by most gamers than actually trying to figure things out. They kept requirements to the bare minimum by using a sub-par for 10 years earlier and WAY sub-par engine for time of rollout graphics engine. They kept combat and quests and levelling quick and easy because that is what the last couple of generations love (the 'i want it now' generations). Lastly, they timed the release perfectly and UO, DAoC, and EQ were all dying slow deaths due to nerfs as well as the fact that home PC's with WoW capable performance were becoming extremely cheap (well under $1000). Let's face .. Blizzard hit a frickin Grand Slam, and even if you don't like WoW you have to admit it. It's an inferior game to many games out there, but few people left for those reasons. The only thing that will kill WoW is that finally people are starting to tire of it and are actually looking elsehwere.
Makanito for the win. Tiltowait for annihilation.
Everyone is completely blind to the weak gameplay elements that this game has due to the story telling. Look, the story telling is nothing we haven't seen in every Bioware game to date - a system which never evolves. The story aspect is fun, but it wears off. Especially across multiple characters. And once it wears off you have a very shallow game, non-existent and non-persistent world, awful PvP, mediocore PvE, and some very bland visuals and armor meshes.
And the only WoW killer is time. Not any single game. Time kills off all other MMORPGs. They get old and get replaced by new things. There just hasn't been anything new in the past 3-4 years to take people away from WoW. With Star Wars, TERA, GW2, and Secret World around the corner, all four will play a large part in helping WoW fade into memory - but none of them will be the end. Time is what got WoW just like it got every MMO before it and just like it will eventually get Star Wars and the other MMOs I mentioned.
Besides. ArcheAge is probably the only really promising game on the horizon in this market. And that will probably end up underachieving.
