First piece of advice: Read these forums and take the advice already posted in similar threads.
Second piece of advice: Ask questions often in the noob chat channel you are forced into. For every asshole (like me) there will be helpful folks too.
Third piece: Do the tutorials, all of them. Don't skimp.
Fourth: EVEMon, get it - NOW.
Good luck, have fun, fly safe. Don't open random containers/wrecks. Don't fly what you can't afford to lose. If you stick with it beyond the Trial join a Corp, stop paying taxes to the NPCs!
that right there is the best piece of advice you can listen to for this game. Otherwise, you may fall into the plex trap many newbies fall into, call the game expensive, and quit .
ALso, just because you can fly something, doesnt mean you should.
That caracal sure looks purdy, but heavy missile 2, no shield skills and no missile upgrades will not look pretty after your insurance pays out.
as said already, EVEmon. Now. do it. Android phone? Aura. Also, eve fitting tool. And visit battle clinic to get an idea on how to fit your ship. Many loadouts on there are great starting points and can at least point you in the right direction.
There is a lot of info to take in initially. If you start to feel overwhelmed, stop. Let it soak in for a day or a few, then pick it up again. EVE is more a hobby than a game.
If your goal is 0.0, then get out there. NOW! dont wait with the mentality of "i will wait until my skills are good enough" The thing is, they are never good enough. there is always something else that needs trained. There is no "turtling" in high sec so to speak. The thing with EVE, YOU have to make it happen. if you wait for an NPC to dictate to you where to go, you are in for a long wait my friend.
Figure out what it is you want to do. You cannot to everything in EVE. you will spread your skills so thin, that even at 20 mill SP, someone with 5 million SP who specialized will run circles around you. Thats possibly the most important thing. You need to know what it is you want to do. and again, waiting for someone to tell you is wrong. You need to decide for yourself. (but it never hurts to ask questions)
Eve university. join it.
Find some eve podcasts and listen. Download the previous shows too to get caught up on goings on, and pick up on any advice given. (podgoo, Fly reckless. and for archived stuff, Warp Drive Active, and eve commune)
I could go on, but the game is what you make of it.
When in a Trade hub you will see contracts for really great deals.
Fully rigged Hulks for 80 mill. Only if you look in the contract there won't be any Hulk. Plex or anything that has a 'view market details option? Is a scam. There is a subtle numbers issue that makes it a scam. Mineral scams are cheesy examples of market things belonging in the market but for some reason are in contracts. To scam you.
Not everyone is out to get you in EVE but like real life most of them aren't your friend either and they just don't give a shit. They won't be mean to you but they just can't be charitable. If its in your nature, be friendly but don't be a door mat. You are on your own in many ways and always ask, what's the catch?
You will never be "epic" in EVE. You might get your 15 minutes of fame but you wont be a game breaker. My original char can kick your ass but I've had 15 noobs kick mine so you will never be invincible and neither will anyone you meet.
Start with Minmatar, AKA Winmatar. They may get dethroned as FotM but even if they do you will have fun with your Rifter and later your Thrasher. Its likely the best starting race right now. On the other hand if you are a miner minded person go Gallente.
I'd add more but MMORPG have one of thier blinky, epileptic ads on the left of the screen and its annoying the shit out of me.
1) Take time to consider what you want to "do", and plan your skill training accordingly. There's no point in training research skills if you plan on being a heavy PvP player.
2) Join a noob-friendly corp to get some tips. Eve University is supposedly a good one.
3) Before you risk anything new in combat, test it out first using EFT (Eve Fitting Tester) and the Singularity test server.
4) Have patience, this is a game meant to be played over more than a year.
I'll reiterate this for a third time because it's a lesson you don't want to learn the hard way. Be prepared to lose ships (a lot of them) and don't let it bother you. Learn from your mistakes and do better next time.
After you get the hang of the basic game, join a player corp. It will make the game 1000x better.

A couple of addons to the above:

Where's the any key?
