I thought I heard somewhere that Rift wouldn't actually have expansions in the usual sense, but rather new content would just keep being released in content patches. I can't verify the information, don't have a link, so it could just be mere conjecture.
They have a new continent in the works that will double the land mass. They also have player housing coming as well. I am curious to see the player housing as when they do something they usually do it right. I am curious to see if they will include building and sandbox type features like that with housing.
I am sure down the road they will have an expansion. They have been the first MMO to retain a sizeable playerbase since WoW's release. Hartsman coming from EQ2 is quite familar with expansions. My guess if they want to grow the game a bit mroe horizintally before they introduce an expansion. That means the new continent and the housing. Hartsman philosphy has been release a narrow game with quality content vs. a broader game with mediorce poorly done content then expand the game horizontally with the emphasis on quality. Which is what they have done. A very hard thing to do intodays market where peopels expectations are completely unrealistic.

They've actually expanded it vertically, not horizontally. Horizontally implies they expanded and improved the entire game. Vertically implies they only expanded the end game content. The content from 1-50 is still basically the same, with the exception of now being able to queue up for your quests (really, Trion?). If they really want to make some much-needed improvement with this game and keep the subscribers they have left (the population is still healthy relatively speaking, but having to close down nearly half your servers implies quite a bit of churn), they better add in some more stuff from levels 1-50 so that the very idea of creating an alt and running through those boring quests in that tiny world will no longer make people projectile vomit.

Yes exactly. I loved leveling in RIFT it was probably the best leveling experience I have had other than WoW and Vanguard. However a few things drove me away pretty quickly.
1. It was too short !!!!!
2. The dungeons at the end were a repeat of earlier content ( this really turned me away )
3. raiding was a mario skills competition ( some raids anyway )
Reason I ask about an expansion is that with some new dungeons / areas and horizontal expansion, I would certainly revisit.
I would love to see the world size doubled.

This is false. Trion has said nothing regarding housing except "We do not have any immediate plans for housing at this time."
As far as 'doubling the land mass'; not really hard to do I'm afraid. It's one of the smallest sized MMOs around.
Regards to expansion, I wouldn't expect to see anything before one year at that earliest (which would be March) but not later than December 2012 as too many other new games would have been out and people won't wait longer than that for one, since a lot of people are already bored with the two starting zones and few races now.

I have not figured out where, but some guy said he datamined this off the pts. It could be another type Ember Isle content patch for all I know.
