I expect to have fun playing the game, at least the first couple of times through anyway.

What options are available at max level will determine how long I decide to play.

    My only expectation is , well I got 2 expectations ;

1- With in the first year , I'd say about 60% of the player base will have moved on to another MMO.

2- I don't see how this game can survive after the foolish mistake of closing down galaxies? SWtor won't have the same popularity as Galaxies , and they shot themselves in the foot by closing it down. They lost alot of fans and alot of credibility in the process , and CREDIBILITY goes a long way in today's MMO business *Looks at NCsoft*  *sigh*

Bioware had nothing to do with SWG being shut down.

Sony had already announced that they were not renewing the licence agreement with LA because SWG was not a viable concern. (Ie it was'ent profitable)

This had nothing to do with Bioware and LA would have been quite happy to take the cash from sony to keep SWG open.

odd...... i read 3 articles that said that LA was the one that didnt renew the contract with SOE cuz they dint want to have conflict with TORO players, and SOE said that the game was still profitable, but was LAs choice.

You will need to provide links to prove this. Every article I have read with John Smedley has said that shutting down SWG was a mutual agreement between SOE and LA over the price vs profit on renewing the licence.

neither in the official announcment says that

with a fast search i found now only this so far --> http://www.mogs.com/blog/fun-stuff/swg-closing-december-15th-2011

and somewhere was and a video with JL in a TV show that said that

fan of SWG, XCOM, Defiance, Global Agenda, Need For Speed, all Star Wars single player games. And waiting the darn STAR CITIZEN

No surprise there lol. Just shows desperation of some people.

How many servers SWTOR will launch with on release?

ShredderSE - Umm how many do they need? Maybe 6.
US, EU, Asian, France, German and Russian.
Subs will be so low there is no need for more
    Snoocky-How many servers?
The first 3 months a lot...after that 2 i guess, one for PVE and 1 for PVP...

Thorbrand - SWTOR doesn't have longevity at all. Might be one of the shortest lived MMOs.

I don't think it really matters who is responsible for closing SWG. The fact is that many people stayed on in SWG after the CU and the NGE divided the SWG community and resulted in a massive drop in subs.

Still, there are now a boat load and hardcore Star Wars fans that can no longer get their fix from SWG. Where else are they going to get it? I think that a large number of SWG players will give TOR a try at least. Hell, I left SWG after the CU ruined it for me and I've been waiting for another Star Wars MMO ever since.

Does it matter that they're two completely different game designs? Not to me. As long as it's fun and plays as it was designed to it's got to be worth trying it out to see how it fits.

I predict 3-4 million sales by the end of January.  I'm not sure what the population breakdown is going to be, so I'm not going to predict an overall retention rate, but I would say at the 6 month mark we will see about 20% retention of hardcore, race to cap with one character then quit MMOers, 80% retention of heavy BioWare and/or Star Wars fans who can only spend 10 hours a week on the game, and something in between that for everybody else.  Those who like the story will stick around at least until they finish it with between 2-8 characters, those who don't like the story will only stick around if their friends do, otherwise they will go back to whatever game their friends/guilds go to next.

I think the game will continue to add subscribers as well as lose them, and I honestly think the worst case scenario is that it levels out and holds steady around 1 million for the forseeable future.

Yeah thats an absolute bs'd number, nothing about swtor losing three hundred thousand preorders, but vgchartz does say that there are about 916,000 preorders, perhaps they had started with 1.2 million preorders?

And "won't have the same popularity as Galaxies?"  Seriously?  More people played in the Thanksgiving weekend beta for TOR than have played SWG since the NGE.

and somewhere was and a video with JL in a TV show that said that

The blogger in that link says :

"Well at first everyone blamed SOE but it really wasn’t their fault. It turns out that LucasArts does not want to let SOE have the Star Wars license because of the new Star Wars the Old Republic game coming out from Bioware."

But cites no source for his assertation.

Sony and LA's official statement is (Again taken from your link) -

"The shutdown of SWG is a very difficult decision, but SOE and LucasArts have mutually agreed that the end of 2011 is the appropriate time to end the game."

So its a *mutual* agreement. Would sony shut down an ongoing concern that was profitable? No.

Do we know that the licence agreement was due for renewal in 2012? Yes.

Reading between the lines then ... Sony had to make a commitment to re-up the licence agreement (Ie pay for it) Now the sub numbers have remained constant in SWG for some time, but do they support a renewal of the licence agreement? I'm gonna have to go with no .. not profitable.

Now its quite possible that LA priced the agreement past the point of profitability with Sony to casue this to occur, but the end result is the same. Game closes b/c its not worth it to renew the agreement.

    Source -http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/06/24/exclusive-smedley-on-the-sunsetting-of-star-wars-galaxies/#continued

"John Smedley: The decision to shut down SWG is first and foremost a business decision mutually agreed upon between SOE and LucasArts. LucasArts has a new game coming out, and the contract would be running out in 2012 anyway, so we feel like it's the right time for the game to end."

"Players will be looking for a villain, either you or LucasArts -- it's interesting that the villain seems to be no one, that this is just the natural evolution of things.

That's really what it's come down to. It's been a genuinely good partnership -- we work with LucasArts literally every day on both this and Clone Wars."

Worst case scenario 1M subs for the foreseeable future? I'm pretty sure the devs would sign for that scenario straight away if you see years as being foreseeable. Retention will be a big issue as with any P2P game. If they can make a profit on box sales alone and keep 1M subs for a good while, they will have done a great job.
