if SWtoR doesnt work for you theres no reason why neither Rift or WoW will, they are pretty much alike.
I'd rather play something different, like ArchAge EvE or GW2.
I don't think he is interested in what you are going to play. he just wantes to choose between Rift and WOW. Maybe he is not into Sci-fi settings?

I agree with you that he should clarify why would SWtoR not work for him, if its merely the sci-fi setting then yeah, WoW would be a worthy replacement. If its the themepark, railroaded, handholding model, then I'd advice him to stay as far away from WoW and Rift as possible, and check the other options I already mentioned.
