Greetings...
First let me say that I don't want to hack or dupe any items in any games.
But I have been reading that for many games hacks and dupes are a real problem.
I don't understand how these types of things work with games. If you can give me some overview of them and how they interact with the game perhaps I can understand better.
Also, since programmers and devs know that this is a problem..can't they code in a way that prvents this type of thing?

The Psychologist says the cup is your mother. The Punk Kid also says the cup is your mother. The Cricket Player says his cup is definately full. Everyone knows that Pamela Andersons cups are full. The Defendant says it was like that when he found it. Me, I just ask the waitress for a refill.
There are inherent exploits in any game. Unfortunately there are those seek these exploits early and cash in on various auction sites by selling money and/or duping guides.
Fortunately, this issue has been increasingly more visible to the companies of various mmorpgs. Basically, don't try it because you will eventually get caught and it's just not worth it
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.

Gameguard won't do much, the majority of Korean MMORPGs use Gameguard now a days, yet a lot of them still have hacks out there, it's easily exploitable from what I've heard.
Anywho, I don't want to go into details and all, but basically these people make bots and such by packet editing, modifying it to do things differently according to their wishes. As for dupes, that's probably packet loopholes as well, and they take advantage of it. It's a problem with many games indeed, and it's tough to get rid of these loopholes, because you can only test it so thoroughly before you find someone with good knowledge of packets to decrypt em and find loopholes.
And no, just because I know how these bots and such work doesn't mean I use them. Never even come close to touching them.
I've been a Computer Programmer for 27+ years, and this type of thing has been going on for a long long time.

Back in the 1980's, Software makers used to build in "hardware/software" copy protection schemes into their gaming and commercial software products.
Yet people would find ways around those "copy protection" schemes. and pass those tricks on to their buddies, etc.
This lead to tons of illegal copies of the software being on the market. (Software Piracy)
This kind of activity killed many software development companies due to lack of funds.
Which in turn robbed the marketplace of many innovative software products that these companies could have produced.

Same applies to hacks and duplication of items in games.
Even with patch after patch to prevent this sort of thing, people still hack and duplicate items.
For instance, Blizzard made several patches to Diablo 2 to address bugs as well as hacks that were used in the game. The earlier hack and duplication methods didn't work in the later patches but that didn't stop the hack and duplication that were used when the "copy" protection schemes were once again hacked.
As for me, I too don't want duplicate items or hacks in games.
If you want to CHEAT in games, cheat in SINGLE Player Mode NOT in MULTIPLAYER.
SWG just recently banned a whole ton of accounts when they discovered their big credit duping. They even went so far as to ban people that had been given huge sums of money as well. It was posted as a major annoucement so that players would know not to accept large sums of money from other chars. Their transaction logging loga all transactions that occur between players (and possibly NPCs). They have taken a good stand (albeit a tought one) on exploiting holes.
Albeit they had a great way to log and catch those kind of things. They keep transaction logs on all transactions that occur, and they can quickly catch something early enough before it becomes too big. I'm sure it doesn't work for everything, but it seems to catch a lot really quick.
