Please help me choose the right side this time!!

The last couple of MMOs I played for a long time are WoW (haven't played for about a year) and Rift (current).

In both games I played on the most popular PvP servers, Blackrock and Briarcliff respectively.

The only prob is, in both games I chose to play the faction that absolutely su*ked at organised PvP .. Alliance in WoW and Defiants in Rift.

In nearly every warzone/battleground etc we would get pwnd over and over by the opposing team (Horde/Guardians), and I think it had something to do with the (general) maturity levels of players in the factions I chose.

That is, everyone in Alliance/Defiants seemed to be out for themselves and had no sense of cohesion or focus on team goals.

So in SWTOR, please help me choose the side that will be more organised/mature!

I'm in this for the long haul and don't want to choose the wrong side again!

PS. I know there are always gonna be exceptions to the rules above (good pvpers in Alliance and Defiants, but I'm just speaking in general from my observations and experience of repetitive and humiliating defeats in warzones).

Thanks so much!

I read an article about faction difference and Bioware mentioned that Empire leads by 15%. Now this could increas or decrease when game goes live but is really really tough to say who is going to be the better side in PVP. I played on 4 servers during beta and every time result was different.

But look at it this way since SWTOR doesn't have WAR style ORVR so faction balance wouldn't be that much problem but even if such a situation arise and you feel like swtiching sides you  don't have to leave the server to join opposite faction since you can play both on same server.

How many servers SWTOR will launch with on release?

ShredderSE - Umm how many do they need? Maybe 6.
US, EU, Asian, France, German and Russian.
Subs will be so low there is no need for more
    Snoocky-How many servers?
The first 3 months a lot...after that 2 i guess, one for PVE and 1 for PVP...

Thorbrand - SWTOR doesn't have longevity at all. Might be one of the shortest lived MMOs.

I will be playing Empire and the general chat seemed on the silly side in beta.  I think the Republic will be your pick.   However, the most popular will be Empire.  But that doesn't mean most skilled.

Republic is where its at, I'm always one for picking the underdog, and thats exactly what the Republic has always been, and they always bring out the win in the end.

Last mention of stats was from the big weekend beta where generally the split was 45% Republic and 55% Empire. Supposedly more PvP'ers have been choosing Empire but that quote was just a guess as to why the difference.

Neither side will be more mature and if you want organisation join a guild, if you're looking for faction wide co-ordination to be the norm you can forget it.

my advice go find 3 friends and run a as a group will probably put your skill lvl higher than most pugs no matter what side they play. I  don't think its possible to make full premades at launch, sp thats not an option.

my experience in beta was that both sides were more interested in killing people than doing what they were supposed to do, so pick a side play till 10 -> play 10 games ->  pick the other side -> level to 10 -> play 10 games  -> and you still don't have any clue about how it will turn out in the end..... its impossible to say.

When playing in the last 2 beta weekends I was republic and we won probably 7/10.   Rebuplic also seemed to be a bit more mature and less nasty towards others (how do I open my ships crew menu?  Alt F12 faggot....actually saw that in general chat lol).

My guess is Empire will have the better PVP players, seems hardcore PVP'ers tend to pick the "evil" side more then the good side.

  • DignaDigna Member UncommonPosts: 1,994

As with many good/evil aligned games, imo the evil guys tend to look cooler, particularly in the early stages everyone sees early on. That decides a lot of folks at times.

I'm going  Republic. Underdogs for the win.

  • I'm guessing PvPers will gravitate slightly towards Empire. But I don't think the difference will be very big.

  • HexipoxHexipox Member UncommonPosts: 241

Republic is not really an underdog. Well it is, but you will never see it. They get people on their servers 13,14,15,16,17,18,19, launch - that gives them a good chance to closing servers for empire or republics to spread it out so noone will see there is a small difference.

I go empire simply because the sniper feels better to play than the gunslinger. huge rifle ftw

You can as well toss a coin and go along with it, since there is no way at all to predict how a mmo population will behave and certainly not what skill levels will players have on either side, before the mmo is even out. Try asking the same question in a year, maybe then it can be answered.

Maybe I misunderstood the question in the OP...   It seemed they were trying to decide which side would be more organized in PvP.   Yet the thread mainly seems to be about populaiton which really isn't relevant to how many of that faction will pvp or be organized.

Of the two games mentioned in the original post I didn't pvp in Rift at all.   In WoW my experience was not that Alliance wasn't organized...   It depended on time of day, server/wargroup and some groups that pvp'd only went as a group.    So when the right bunch of people were going to do some world pvp things went well or as well as they could go.

Earlier this year there was one person that Organized both factions to get some pvp rolling between the factions.   Out of that came a pretty well organized setup on both sides.    Which is kind of the key to the question asked...

The only real way to choose the "right side" would be to have information from the guild program.   Where you could see what guilds were being put on what servers.   Then if you knew those guilds (because most come from other games) and their pvp history you could pick the "right" server... beyond that faction would just come down to personal choice.

The guild program imho is one of the things BioWare did right.   Simply because it let active guilds that wanted allies/enemies could take advantage... and get organized.

Obviously the problem is you don't have that information... They mentioned putting out some information before early access started.   I'm just not sure if only the guilds are being notified of where they are going or if there will be a public source for all to see.

depends how you feel about the lore, the Republic will ALWAYS win at the end; if you don't care about lore and feel attracted to the Empire, go for it, but whatever you pick, I recommend you to join a guild before the game launches; if you played WoW, you know what I mean.

    Welcome to the Empire.

    Republic guys are  nerds

  • solarinesolarine Member Posts: 1,203

I ran a lot of Warzones on several servers, but couldn't get any consistent, meaningful result out of it. Sometimes Republic just wiped the floor with Empire while all the Empire players just stood in the middle and try to go for kill count, and sometimes the other way around.

General chat seemed to be similar on both factions, and generally annoying. :) Though I'd say it seemed somewhat better on PVE servers than the PVP ones.

If I were going PVE, I'd just go with the side I like more in terms of story and character etc. Myself, I found especially doing the flashpoints on the Empire side much more fun, mainly due to multiplayer dialogue :) Though on both sides the runs were generally smooth, I had only one that went relatively bad, and that was on the Republic side. On the other hand, it was this same server that the Republic steamrolled the opponent on quite some Warzone matches.

If I were going PVP... well, that's a bit tricky. Empire will almost certainly have more players on PVP servers in total, but it'll utlimately depend on individual servers. Besides, people choosing the "underdog" might surprise you. :)

I believe (but could be wrong) that it will end up similar to WoW. Empire (Horde) will have the most players with a lot of them immature players on their side. Republic (Alliance) will have less players but the shortest queues for PvP. Also these players will be more mature.

As to your question OP: it's impossible to say which side will be more organised and skilled. This totally depends on the players so I think Republic will be the better pick. Just because, like I mentioned, it will have more mature and therefore more organised players.

    Hey guys, OP here,

Thanks very much for your opinions, I really appreciate it!

I'm leaning towards Republic at this stage (Sage healer) as it seems to be the slight underdog, but you had some great ideas about looking at the pvp guilds, and also trying out both sides.

And I agree, we will really only be able to tell after the game has been out for a while.

Good luck everyone, and may the force be with you!

Sounds good.  I would like to point out though, that I am rolling Sith for the story.  Sith Lords are my favorite aspect of the SW universe.  I think if you roll a character for reasons besides story in this game, you will be let down in a big way.

Just play well, make sure you're geared for pvp as much as you can be, lead by example and, overall, you'll win more than you will lose.  In Wow I'd often run into people in BGs saying "Ally sucks, haven't won all day" - I'd look at my stats and say "I've won this BG 135 out of 180 times - maybe it's you" - that shuts them up and usually they get their first win of the day shortly thereafter.

But unless you have organized friends you're going to lose games no matter what.  And you'll have bad days.  Keep your perspective.  Especially if there's a bunch of bots taking up slots on your side queueing.

Its not the sides that s*ck, its just people that fail...

Thats why i will choose to play where my friends play, its easier to forgive friends their faults as it is to forgive strangers...

Dont blame the side your on for you not making an effort to get more kills.

Why dont you roleplay the game by your nature, are you reepublic or sith ?

you should join theside that is your natural talent, instead of playing the game the wrong way

just so you can be better in pvp.

  • demarc01demarc01 Member UncommonPosts: 429

Which side your on does not matter a hoot.

If you join a guild / group of friends and PvP together you'll do well.

If you join solo all day and pug .. well expect to get whooped alot.

Tis the nature of instanced PVP.

There is some open world PvP in TOR, but population numbers so far supplied dont seem to indicate a huge margin, so again it'll come down to who's got thier shit together and who dont. Side wont matter a toss. Different servers will see different results and even then it only takes 1 person or guild to whip thier side into shape. Hell I still remember some of our *leaders* from DAoC and other game, they logged on and people fell into step. I would see RvR be chaos when I was on an alt, yet when me and my guidleys logged on .. we'd start taking objectives and shit would fall into line.

If you really wanna do well, be vocal (but not condescending) and know your crap. It really dont take long to get a name as a *leader* and you'd be suprised how many people actually want to be lead in these games.

I'm a big Pvper, and I'm rolling republic, because I like being the good guy and showing the enemy that it doesn't equate to sucking. More Empire? More targets to make remember my name.
